“Ria Lagartos is an exquisite lagoon full of wildlife and flowers.”
Reviewed July 28, 2013 via mobile

Diego and his son took very good care of us and it was worth getting up for the 6a.m. birdwatching tour in the beautiful lagoon. We saw many birds, and the flamingos were beyond beautiful. They are an iridescent pink - no photo or painting can capture this exquisite color. My husband is a photographer and he captured incredible shots of lagoon birds. This is a small, sleepy fishing village full of friendly people and colorful homes. Driving there is easy on excellent roads. Sunsets are incredible! My brother-in-law is a big fisherman, and went on a tarpon fishing expedition with Diego. He did catch and release (tarpon is not edible) but the fish gave him a satisfying run for his money and a wonderful experience.

“Successful, memorable birding adventure”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

My husband and I hired Diego to guide us for a day of land and sea birding in March, 2013. Our experience was wonderful. He took us in a comfortable van to several birdy spots about 20 minutes outside town; following this land tour and a snack, we went up river in his boat for the flamingos and other water species. Diego knows the birds by both sight and call. I added 24 birds to my list that day including (with wonderful, prolonged views) Black-throated Bobwhite, Yucatan Wren, Gray-crowned Yellowthroat and Mexican Sheartail. Beyond his knowledge of birding, Diego is also very personable and willing to help you in any way needed. I loved my time in Río Lagartos!

Diego is a great host! He is very helpful and knowledge and has helped tremendously during two stays in Rio Lagartos this year. The food and service at his restaurant are great and his bed and breakfast is clean, neat, comfortable and well-priced. If you are going to the Yucatan for wildlife watching, I would highly recommend him. If you are looking for an adventurous vacation with great wildlife, good food and very comfortable place to stay, consider having Diego be your guide.

I've stayed with Diego Nunez & family twice in the past year when in Rio Lagartos for research-related field trips. The restaurant is excellent and Matildé is a fantastic cook. The rooms at the Posada are clean, bright, and colorful. Diego is a wealth of information about Yucatan's unique ecology, the birds and other wildlife, and is a generous and gracious host. His English is excellent, which is helpful because my Spanish is terrible. Diego also knows the surrounding region including the villages of Loche, San Juan del Rio, Espita, etc., and the northern Yucatan coastline. Looking forward to our next visit!

“Wonderful experience!”
Reviewed July 14, 2013 via mobile

Diego, was Very knowledgable of the water birding trip we took. We went out on the 6 am boat and were able to catch a number of early birds, like hawks, egrets, herons, and a boat billed heron which was a rare sighting, Rosetta spoon bill, tiger heron, laughing hawk, turkey vulture. Of course the pink flamingos were fabulous and plentiful.

Rio Lagartos is a quaint little fishing village right on the water. If you like fishing tours Diego is great for that as well as my husband found out out by catching his first Tarpon.

Dealing with Diego was easy and efficient. Paying with pay pal or cc is easy. He was on time for both tours.

One suggestion when you go, is take the early tour. When we came back the birds were no longer there for the 9 o'clock tour. Also take water or drinks with you as none is provided.

Highly recommend him, he even sent us photos he had taken.
