“Perfect overnight hotel in Rio Lagartos”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

We stayed one night in this hotel before our day trip to see the flamingos in October 2012.

The front desk staff was very helpful on our arrival; they had our informations on hand and our room was already prepared. We were very pleased with the room : clean, spacious with a nice balcony to enjoy the view of the lagoon. However, we could have used a more comfortable bed.

The staff recommended us a guide for the flamingos tour (Albert) and we had a wonderful time.

I would definately recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had a room on the last floor and we had a very nice view of the lagoon.

Positives:
Nice room, very clean, everything working, plenty of hot water, good A/C, off-street parking. Well-maintained, trash-free grounds. Our original room's water heater wasn't working so the manager immediately upgraded us at no charge. Unfortunately there wasn't anyone available to help us transfer our baggage up the stairs but that was a very minor detail.

Negatives (related to the hotel):
1. The restaurant was not open for dinner for some reason. Low season, perhaps?
2. The hotel is located directly across the street from a lagoon (?) with a disgustingly polluted shoreline. Dozens of fishing vessels were moored about what might otherwise be a nice promenade. Trash, dead fish, and brush crowded the shore and greeted us with the incredible stench of rotting garbage, decaying marine life, etc. It was horrible. Sadly enough, it wouldn't take much to clean it up - perhaps one full weekend's work by a few dozen townspeople or business owners. One evening we observed a shrimper and his wife sorting the days catch at about 9 pm on a filthy sidewalk which totally quashed any desire we might have had to eat locally-caught seafood. As nice as the hotel was we won't return simply because of it's location in close proximity to what I can only describe as a cesspool.

A stay in the Hotel Villa de Pescadores beautifully complements the enriching and visually-dazzling experience of Yucatan's Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. The warm, family-style welcome, clean and comfortable accommodation, and delicious menu of just-caught fish make this family-owned hotel a delightful base for exploring Rio Lagartos' natural wonders. Mr. Felipe Gonzales and his lovely wife Elena are splendid hosts - affectionate and caring, attentive, always eager and willing to help. I wholeheartedly recommend this genuine hospitality experience.

We expected a hotel, this is more a hostel. The rooms are very very basic, the door can hardly lock. Beds are good, the balcony was great with a great view, the rooms are clean, but I have never stayed in a hotel which were so basic and simple, so I would more call it a good hostel. The hotel served surpringly good breakfast. The staff is very friendly and we were able to pay on credit card, not ATM's within 50 km. We stayed 2 nights, which were too much. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in the town and all restaurants close at 20.00.

Basic clean rooms. There are no clocks in the rooms but you don't really need one. Every hour on the hour and half hour a church bell rings--all night long; twelve times at midnight. We spent a Sunday night here; don't know if it was because it was Sunday or if the bell always rings at night. We had second story rooms with nice views of the ocean and the flamingo tour men staring at us! The rooms are clean and very basic for about $50 a night. The owner was very nice and was as helpful as possible. The hotel cook was sick so we didn't get to eat here. When we asked for a recommendation for a place to eat the owner could not recommend a place. He said "no" while shaking his head. The owner offered to make us some quesadillas and we should have taken him up on it. There is no good food in Rio Lagartos; that's for another review! We did have breakfast at the hotel which was basic breakfast food and fine. We had to laugh when our flamingo boat tour operator recommended to us where to eat. That awful place we had dinner!

Room Tip: Better views on the second or third floor. Make sure the cook is working when you visit.

We decided to go to Rio Lagartos instead of Celestun to see the flamingos. We were on day 3 of a 2-week trip around the Yucatan by motorcycle. We pulled in to the town to find very few choices but had made a note of this one the night before. It was better than expected. We had a ground floor which was great since we had the motorcycle. The staff was very considerate and friendly. The food at the restaurant was delicious. They are right next door to a place that offers tours. It's right by the water and boat docks. Each room even has a little patio for sitting outside. We had fun walking around the town, too. It was kind of loud one of the nights but nothing compared to most of the other places that we stayed on our trip.

We were totally delighted with our stay. The food was wonderful, the room clean, and the host delightful. We felt lucky to have discovered this jewel. When I say the room was clean...even the blades on the ceiling fan were clean! Another plus was the totally silent airconditioner.

Room Tip: Upstairs is a must! Beautiful view of the water. We even saw flamingos fly over while eating break...
