We took a couple day trip to Ria Largartos from our home in Merida. As there are no surface rivers in the Yucatan, rias are best described as estuaries. Ria Largartos is a national park, and one of the least littered spots we have seen in Mexico. Hopefully this area will be protected from development forever.
Spent the night at the Villa de Pescadores, right on the malecon, great views. If you stay make sure the toilet flushes, we had to use waste paper bin as a bucket. It is the nicest place to stay in RL. Try to get the upper floor, corner room, facing the lighthouse. The bed was comfortable, but the room is a bit pricey at 700 pesos (about $55.00 US)
Not much going on in town, but it is best to get there the afternoon before you plan to take the tour, as the best time to view wildlife has you leaving at 6:00AM. We used Jesus as our guide, and did a 5 hour trip, that way you see more. (this sounds so introspective)
(Jesus Marfil, [--], English speaking)
The restaurant next to the hotel was also good, we brought our own wine and opener, no corkage, but we gave the waiter a better tip.
Jesus brought us to the biggest concentration of Flamingos we have seen in the Yucatan. We floated in the salt channel, and the ladies got a rather personal mud bath from Jesus.

The owners of this small hotel right on the waterfont in the center of town are very friendly and helpful. They took time to answer all our questions and gave us advice on the remainder of our trip to other places in the Yucatan. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. I highly recommend it as the best place to stay in Rio Lagartos. They have a guide who takes people in his boat to the bird sanctuary. He was very knowledgeable, responsive, and reasonably priced.

Stayed at this superb hotel right on the waterfront.Really natural and rustic feel to the place withj excellent friendly staff. The roof top views on the greatest free show on earth, the Sun Set and if your up early enough...the sun rising....are simply beautifull.

Cant rate it high enough...its a must...
