“Interesting but not great”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

Rooms are very basic, but kind of trendy. We had an ant problem - they were everywhere and got all through our bags (and baby food). The staff changed our room, but we just had the same problem again.
The pool is nice, but was a little chilly.
Food average. We are in the restaurant two nights in a row and the meal was exactly the same.

The setting is beautiful, with a great view over Lyon, but cuisine was disappointing. It's very pricy for what you get : expect 50 euros, including wine. The wine selection is small but well done and prices are very reasonnable. Produce are perfect quality and fresh. You are not able to choose first course and desserts, but the selection of main courses is good. First course was quite weak as you don't expect chicken liver paté in this price range as the only option. Main course was very good, even if pork could be serve cooked or pink but not raw inside. Desserts where good but very rich with cream and butter pastries.

We have been there with family 2 adults and 2 kids from friday untill the monday morning. First night perfect food and food. Pricy but it is good food.

In the weekend the service in restaurant or bar was below level. It was like there was no maitre d hotel. It was like the staff was replaced by jobstudents only. Even the sunday we left the table because nobody was paying attention too us. No coffee was offered.

Also in the day time a duvel was served in a stella glass and it toke time because the girl was new and not able to cope with the stress.

In room 60 there was a continious sound of the hoot passing the room.

Room very neat and ok.

I would give for the food 4 stars but because of the service of the staff. Nice location

Room Tip: Room 60 (family room) has the sound of the hoot.

While a little bit off the Autoroute du Soleil, this place is worth the detour for its fantastic location and excellent dinner/bed&breakfast deal. The restaurant is perched on the top of a mountain overlooking the Rhone valley and serves an excellent 4 course dinner (included in the overnight rate).

On top of the hill with great views. Innovative cuisine. Some nice designer details all around the property. It only has a limited number of rooms, which is for me a big plus. Definitely not luxurious, but comfy and clean. Free WiFi. Free mini bar (non-alchoholic only :-))
They also have a convenient conference room and provide enough Nespresso coffee machines.

Set high above Lyon the hotel overlooks the city and the surrounding suburbs and countryside. Mind you we awoke in a cloud which also has its own charm. The hotel is a strange mixture of styles but somehow it all comes together as rather charming. The room is sparse, even down to an open concrete wall. The bed is comfortable. The bedside tables ate two cement bricks with a wooden top. Outside the window there is a strip of grass and a couple of miniature trees. Bathroom is large and functional. The dining area is comfortable and set among glass walls to make the most of the view. The breakfast is excellent. It is fantastic to find something so close to Lyon without the hassle of car parking and noise.

We discovered the Ermitage on a visit to Paul Bocuse’s mythical restaurant at Collonges on the outskirts of Lyon. Looking for a place to stay nearby, we happened upon the website of the Ermitage. We were intrigued by the unusual character of this hotel located at the pinnacle of the Mont d’or.

After winding our way through the villages leading up to Saint Cyr, we began to wonder if we would ever reach the hotel. When suddenly we arrived at the top and drove into a small car park perched on a promontory over-looking the spectacular Rhone valley. Lyon quite literally lay at our feet.

On entering the Ermitage, we were at once taken with the quirky 1950′s school-room inspired design. The welcoming reception area is punctuated with retro furnishings, that at once inspire a nostalgic ‘bygone childhood’ atmosphere. However, beyond these details the hotel itself displays a serenely minimalist architecture inspired by the spartial hermit’s dwelling located a few metres from the hotel, and from which it takes it’s name.

We choose a standard room with a view, although there are panoramic rooms that command a wider view of the valley.

We fell in love with the simple design inspired by the tranquility of the neighbouring hermit’s cell. Furnishing consists of a large, deliciously comfortable white bed and two simple concrete bedside tables with lamps resembling a contemporary take on builder’s lanterns. Each room has an alcove with a table and two chairs for guests to contemplate and enjoy the view. A mini grass garden lines the window on level with the sill, giving you the impression of being part of the rolling hills and nature visible for miles on end. The one concession to modern life is the discreet but large, flat screen TV on the wall opposite the bed. The bathrooms are very spacious, perfectly equipped and have well selected products.

However, the Ermitage has another secret weapon that gets people driving up the mountain on a daily basis; the restaurant. The open-plan kitchen over-looks a bistro dining room commanding a breathtaking view over the valley. The signature of the restaurant is creativity and simplicity, inspired by local, seasonal products. The food is delicious and people come from far and wide to enjoy a convivial Sunday lunch in this celestial setting.

It goes without saying that breakfast is a treat at this boutique hotel. Guests can help themselves to the buffet filled with exquisite locals cheeses, charcuteries, fresh baguettes and croissants. Our favorite is warm brioche with a choice of Bonne Maman jams and thick butter. Guests serve themselves to yoghurt and milk in the communal retro-style fridge. Eggs can be ordered at the open-plan kitchen, which the staff will happily make as they busily, but quitely, prepare for the lunchtime guests. When the sun is out, enjoy your breakfast on the bistro terrace over-looking the vast Rhone valley while sipping on a cup of rich coffee or Earl Grey tea.

The hotel also boasts a stylish little indoor swimming pool and a sun-deck for those looking to relax.

In short, this hotel achieves the rare combination of great food, excellent rooms and friendly staff. Its refined simplicity and quirky sense of humour (each room has its own name inspired by the word ‘time’), makes it the perfect place for a relaxing get-away or base for visiting Lyon.

We have since elected it our hideaway retreat and have been back countless times…
