Actually its been awhile since we stayed at the Last resort (it was our honeymoon :)
Like the majority of the people that visit this place, we also a stayed couple of nights before and after the heaphy track. On the first night we were surprised to see the chocolate & strawberry & wine waiting for us as a welcome gift for our honeymoon. Great breakfast and amazing supper & beer after the track.
Highly recommended !

We ended up in Last Resort as a true last resort because there was a mix up with our hostel booking up the road and after leaving the rude owner there we came to this place.

The staff were so lovely and we immediately felt like it was meant to be. The rooms are clean, simple but everything you need. There's no glamour but the grounds are laid out nicely and there was always a very welcoming atmosphere in the lounge and bar area. I don't think there's anywhere else worth staying if you go there.

OK, this is not one of my normal reviews.

We were stranded in Karamea by the ferocious storms that ravaged the West Coast during Easte,r 2014. My wife and I were unable to stay at the hotel where we had booked a room as the staff were unable to get into the township when all the roads were blocked by fallen trees.

The people at the Last Resort arranged a room for us (and anybody else who was stranded by the storms) - thank you, Dave and Sarah. The township was without power (and has no town water supply - it's all tank water).

Without power, the logistics were a little tricky - but the manager organised for the kitchen staff to cook dinner on gas hot-plates (but no ovens) and use head-torches to see what they were doing. Now, under these conditions, you would probably excuse people for saying "here's dinner, take it or leave it" but that didn't happen. A dinner menu was prepared based on what was available and able to be prepared easily - 3 entrée items, 6 main courses and 6 desserts! My wife and I opted for the rogan josh curry with rice (really nice!) while others tried meals like ham steaks with vegetables or steak sandwiches. For dessert, I went with a lemon prosset while my wife went with the moccachino mousse and ice cream. The meals were all served at the bar to conserve candles and the beer taps were working just fine - to the relief of the locals who had joined us. The wines in the fridge were still cold and there was a good range of both beers and wines available at very reasonable prices. The locals that joined us made this a fun evening and the staff here turned what could have been a truly miserable experience into a lasting memory.

Prices were good - meal prices on par with similar establishments and room prices were quite good.

If you're venturing up into the northern end of the West Coast (and you should, the scenery is fantastic), make sure you stay at the Last Resort.

and its little wonder when you have the likes of Ed and Tania running the show along with their brilliant staff, they do everything with seemingly effortless ease, nothing is a problem.
The Last Resort is one of the best establishments l have had the pleasure of staying in, full stop.
The conviviality starts at Ed's Bar and spreads its way right throughout the kitchen and into the dining room. The Karameans are some of the friendliest folk l've had the pleasure to meet, they stop to take the time to exchange stories, and they smile with a genuine warmth and sparkle.
We ate dinner there twice and the cuisine and service were first rate, these guys really care about presentation without being over the top. The double room we stayed in was excellent value, and reflected well the obvious desire to build something a little special without being grandiose.
Thanks again to Ed, Tania, all staff and the friendly folk of Karamea for helping make our stay a memorable one, we hope to visit again some day soon.

We had just come off the Heaphy Track - one of NZ's Great Walks - and needed to rest up before taking the bus back to civilisation - Nelson airport.
We were greeted warmly ( a booking had been made) and reception took our tramping backs while we enjoyed our first beer at the bar.with a group of mountain bikers from Christchurch who we had met on the track. Our accommodation was basic - shared twin room and shared bathroom across the way which might be inconvenient in high season. So great hot showers to ourselves then back to the bar for pre drinks and dinner in the well appointed dining room - roast pork and veges - ample portions too. The deserts we saw looked great but the dinner left insufficient room. Back in the bar we were treated to a documentary on the sports screen about the Karamea Timber Mill in the 1990's. It made for an interesting evening with the locals.. Next morning was an early start and reception organised the bus / shuttle to Westport and provided a complimentary coffee while we waited. A great place to finish a long walk.

Room Tip: If comfort is required or for a longer stay you would want to upgrade to the regular (not backpacker...

My husband, adult son, and I spent 1 night here prior to a day of rafting on the Karamea River with Ultimate Descents. We rented a 2 bedroom, 1 bath unit. The master bedroom had a queen bed with an inner spring mattress that was OK in comfort, a small night stand, nice lighting, and a luggage rack. The second bedroom was smaller with limited walking or luggage space. It had a double bed. The kitchen has a microwave, toaster, 2 burner electric glass cook top, no oven, and small counter space. The bath had extremely limited counter space, a tub, and a shower that was enclosed with 2 curtains. The shower head was stationary, in the middle of the curtain enclosure, faced the wall and was a small enclosure. This set-up did not work well for any of us (we are 5'7", 6'0" and 6'3") The TV has 7 channels. There is internet access for a small fee, but can only be used for one device. A negative is that the windows have no screens. The pictures make it appear that the cottages are in the woods. This is not the case. One is able to park directly in front of ones unit. The facility has an excellent restaurant, which is a welcomed item as there is only one other restaurant in the small town of 425 people.

The last resort is not what it seems by name or from the road. To me... It will be the first resort and I would book to stay next time I'm up that way. From the outside it seems to be a sleepy motel. But inside there is a well stocked bar and the bar is run by "Ed". He is the resort operator along with his wife, the boss, ( my impression anyway) Ed certainly has a way to make your stay a good one. The food was well done and served by a very pleasant Estonian waitress. The Eco friendly people will love this place too. The resort has mostly been built with local materials and skills.
They have a range of rooms from lodge to self contained units the you can cook in. A lovely place staffed with friendly people. Talk to the locals at the bar they are experts in this part of the country. And they don't bite.
Stay here again.... Certainly
