“A French experience with British hosts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2011

Owners, Jo and Marc, have retained the French atmosphere in their B & B. Enjoy the Voltaire at its best and opt for the evening meals. Good food and wines enjoyed around a large table with other guests. Jo and Marc are relaxed and knowledgeable hosts and Marc just happens to be a brilliant cook too!
The rooms, all ensuite, have French charm and character though the beds and bedlinen have been shipped from Britiain and are exceptionally comfortable!
Airvault is in a fairly central position with La Rochelle, Poitiers (and Futuroscope), Saumur, Chinon a comfortable day's trip away. Local markets and caves are also great to visit.

We stayed at this fabulous Poitou-Charentes B&B last year and this time round it has only improved. Marc and Jo are the nicest people ever: they're equally happy to have a chat or to leave one in peace, if you need advice they know the area like the back of their hand and are fluent in French, and they are quietly but consistently helpful - uniquely, it's five-star treatment with a family atmosphere.
The rooms are very stylish, very quiet (my hubby sleeps very lightly and didn't wake up once!), extremely comfortable and have excellent showers and baths. The meals are exceptional (Marc could be a professional chef) and the vibe is really relaxed and pleasant. There's a little garden to chill in, a couple of sitting rooms, a pool at the nearby campsite - and did I mention the food?! Check out The Voltaire website as Marc's recipes are updated on it regularly. Locally, there's also lots to see and several nice country walks. We had a lovely time there and will definitely go again.

We were attending a wedding in a remote village and booked the Voltaire after finding it on the Internet. When we arrived we realised what a find we had made. Marc and Jo were so helpful. We used the pool at the local campsite and were the only ones there despite a full campsite! (no charge) We had a wonderful meal in the garden of the B&B cooked by Marc and served by Jo - we all ate everything as it was so good - including my very fussy 12 year old! (And the price was very resaonable too!) The rooms were tastefully restored and very spacious - the bathrooms were also spacious and modern with lovely showers or baths. Anything we needed or asked for, Jo and Marc found for us with a smile. I cannot recommend this lovely place highly enough- you won't regret a trip!

My wife and I were on a two week road trip around France when we stayed at The Voltaire. This was the second (of three) places that we stayed in, and it was by far the best - so much so that we chose to extend our stay at this hotel in Airvault. There was plenty to do in the area - we visited some Chateaux in the local area, enjoyed tasting the local wines, visited Saumur (a must if you are in the area). This part of France is definitely worth visiting - particularly given that it isn't yet on the main tourist trail.

Marc and Joe were excellent hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The function rooms downstairs were beautiful and gave a very welcoming air of relaxation. The food was superb (we ate dinner in the hotel for 3 nights and enjoyed 3 great varied menus which made use of the plethera of local produce in the area).

The room we stayed in was clean, well appointed and the bed was huge and comfy. The decoration and soft furnishing were beautiful and individual. We had views over the garden and the town of Airvault - which is a couple of minute walk from the doorstep of The Voltaire.

We will definitely be going back to stay next year.

We stayed three nights at the Voltaire, we were welcomed by the owners Marc and his wife Joe, and shown personally to our room which was pleasantly clean with an immaculate ensuite. The lounge area was very comfortable with large relaxing settee's and colour television. The dining area is very large compared to the size of the hotel, the dining room also has a separate seating should you wish not to watch television or just relax in peace and quiet, again on comfortable settee's. Our bed was extremely comfortable. We parked right outside the hotel, with a few metres walk to the entrance. The hotel is situated only a few minutes from the town.

This is the third time we have been to The Voltaire and I didn't think it could get any better but each time we have been we have been bowled over by Mark & Jo's welcome and the stunning bedrooms. To put this in to perspective we were travelling from Disneyland Paris to The Dordogne and we went an hour out of our way to stay here on the way down and shall be staying again on the way back to Caen (which is very much on the way).

The bedroom we stayed in was beautifully desgined with the most fabulous en suite bathroom. Mark welcomed us with a drink and cooked an amazing evening meal and even catered separately for our two little boys (2 & 1). Because of our boys being early risers we wanted an early breakfast for me and them and a later one for my wife...no problem to our generous hosts who provided fresh croissants and pain au chocolat baked that morning by the excellent local boulangerie.

I can't emphasise how much we enjoyed ourselves and how relaxing it was and to make everything really easy I was even able to book our stays on their website (www.thevoltaire.com) was a piece of cake.

Enjoyed a first visit to Airvault where we stayed at The Voltaire, courtesy of owners Marc and Jo Cottrell. We were made to feel very welcome, and treated to delicious evening meals cooked by Marc. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with brand new bathrooms and amazingly comfy beds. The Voltaire is very central - an easy walk to the town centre. Very relaxing.
