PlayaRoca is oriented toward younger travelers on a budget. The rooms are clean and each has private shower. Its right on the beach at a preferred surfing area. My wife and I hired a local to take us into the Juan Venado Nature Reserve and the trip through the mangrove swamp was a real highlight for us. Poneloya is also close enough to Leon that we went for day trips to view all the churches and for shopping.
The owners are Americans so they appreciate the value of air-conditioning which is really important if you visit during a hot season as we did.
At the time we were there Playa Roca just had a bar and snack/restaraunt although we got the bartender to cook us up a fish we bought off a fisherman. I've heard they have a more extensive menu now. There are several pretty good restaurants in Poneloya.
The Las Penitas/Poneloya coastal villages are a great way to see old Nicaragua. A lot of the locals from Leon hang out there on the weekends. So I definitely recommend Playa Roca hotel if you want a authentic, laid back Nicaraguan beach experience.
