“Nice place”

Recommended! Sitting in the wind on the platform watching life in the bay and the waves further on. Earlier I used to stay at Hotel Suyapa, from now on I will stay here. Be careful crossing the river where most of the boats are anchored (to the right seen from Barca de Oro - I got nine major curs in my feet on the sharp rocks, straight to the hospital)

Room Tip: The cabanas in the backk are nice, but you will hear the noise ...

Little rustic but sweet place. Beach was not white sand but dark and mingled with locals. Cheap great eats. Must visit... Service was great although not much English they tried very hard... Wifi was intermittent...

Room Tip: Had a private room with bathroom.

Stayed one night and had dinner. Unfortunately I found the accommodation simply a little too rustic. It was March but nonetheless warm in the room at night as the cabin (entirely made of wood and bamboo) too far back to benefit from any sea breezes and no air conditioning available. Bathroom was too basic..the lighting so weak it was impossible to see to shave and the shower to weak to use. The meal was only passable. So we moved on to another hotel.

Barco de Oro is a small family run beach resort with basic accommodations, excellent food and friendly attentive staff. Shady palapas and hammocks are perfect places to relax and enjoy the ambiance of this special Las Penitas hostal.

My husband and I live on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua. We had never been to Leon, so we took a mini-vacation to explore the area. I read the reviews on Trip Advisor and since we were craving good seafood, we made reservations at Barca de Oro. We weren't disappointed. Their fresh fish fillets melted in our mouths, with a homemade sauce that was incredible. The next night we had shrimp kabobs...another delicious meal. The portions are huge! We stayed in the hotel...a nice room...nothing fancy...yet it had air-conditioning and a cool painting on the wall of the fishing pongas flying through the waves. We took two of their tours...one was a 3 hour boat ride through the mangrove swamps...remember to bring binoculars because there is a huge variety of birds. That night, we took a turtle tour. We walked along the beach for several hours without flashlights hoping to spot a turtle, but we didn't see even one that night. Disappointing, but we still have many more opportunities to see the turtles, since we live in Nicaragua. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Barca de Oro. It was a short bus ride from Leon, the staff were friendly, and the tours were inexpensive if you share with other guests....but the real surprise was the amazing food. We'll be back, soon!

Multiple fantastic experiences, nice staff, nice owner, great barbecue, good prices. We stayed with 4 people and two of our dogs in the eco-cabaña and was great eperience. my dogs know the way through the place and are also very welcome

Room Tip: if you do not mind low standards, the eco cabin is a very good choice!

I come and have diner at the Barca de Oro every year when staying at Las Penitas. I always ask Sandra the owner if she has fresh fish from the Estrero de San juan. When she does, I am in. They prepare it very well and the portions are generous. Do not miss it if you are around, you might also have the chance to come across the fishermen bringing some incredible cach to Sandra. Have your camera ready.
