WOW - Sokala Villas is a little gem. Location, Location, Location. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind and completely turn off whilst on holiday (no TV or Internet) this is the place to stay.

We had the friendliest welcome - and it was genuine. Our Villa (2) was on the absolute beach front, with an amazing pool, BBQ and outdoor lounging furniture. The Villa was well equipped and although a little tired, it had everything we could have wished for.

There are lots of eating option within a couple of minutes walk from the Villa. Rickshaw was by far a standout for us - great SE Asian cuisine at a very reasonable price (make sure you book).

I suggest going to the market on Saturday for supplies, Prime Foods for meat & utilise the BBQ for lunches.

Will we return - yes we will. Thanks to the team for making our stay memorable. Cheers!

Room Tip: Ask for the beach front Villas with a pool. You get the breeze to cool you down with an excellent vi...

This April was our 1st visit to Rarotonga and we were fortunate to stay at the beautiful Sokala Villas. We arrived and were warmly greeted by Lawrance (the owner) and Susan both seemed genuinely excited we made the long journey to their home in paradise. They had our villa ready for us even though we arrived earlier in the day than expected...just one of the many nice things they did for us during our stay. Our villa sat right on Muri Lagoon giving us an unobstructed view to the outer reef and a post card like view of several of the motus (sm islands) a stone throw away. We found our villa stocked w/ milk, juice, fresh fruit and beautiful flowers...and an ice cold bottle of champagne! Could there be a better way to welcome your guests?
Sokala Villa was the perfect romantic getaway set in an unbelievable location...just what we were looking for. This is not a large resort w/ the pluses and minuses that go along w/ those types of properties. Its a half dozen well planned wooden villas w/ large open decks...and some w/ cool fresh water swimming pools. The grounds are well maintained and most everything you could ask for to enjoy the lagoon is provided on site (kayaks, snorkels & fins, and reef shoes, etc.). The decor is rustic w/ lots of local art and everything inside is comfortable and pleasing. The Villas are also conveniently located close to many fine restaurants, bars, cafes and markets. You can rent a car or a motor scooter...or catch the bus within 2 or 3 minutes walking distance.
If you are looking for an ultra modern, cookie cutter resort, this may not be the place for you. But if you are want an awesome, laid back experience where all you need has been thought of and provided for you, there is no place better than the Sokala Villas at Muri Lagoon...it truly is your homeport in paradise!

Room Tip: Email Susan as you do your trip planning. She is so nice and a wealth of information you will find...

This year will be our 8th visit to Sokala,in the last decade, and long may they continue!
From those first footsteps on the silky white sand and into the warm ( and safe ) waters of Muri lagoon, the genuinely warm " family" welcome embraces.
To wake up to the sounds of the distant reef and the occasional coconut falling into the lagoon, is heaven on earth, whilst the night sky brings a moon and stars you feel you can touch - with the relaxing soft whisper of the warm breeze in the coconut palms.
Our hosts, Lawrance,Suz and Sarina, have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Muri Lagoon area, as well as of the Cook Islands as a whole - and we are proud to call them our " Cook Island Family ".
Nothing is too much trouble , and they can help organise whatever you wish - They are also brilliant at making surprise special occasions happen.
The idyllic, peaceful Sokala complex is absolutely beach/lagoon front.
The spacious and comfortable villa we stay in has its own private swimming pool ( as do a number of the others ) , with expansive decks. All have great views.
Sokala provides complimentary kayaks and snorkel equipment to explore the lagoon and its motu ( islands ).
We would personally recommend bringing a pair of good quality reef shoes to maximise your lagoon experience, both here and at other places on Rarotonga.
And if its one of those occasional showery days,- or you just want to chill-out more ,- Sokala has a great library of books.
Muri village itself has a compact, relaxed, and comprehensive infrastructure for tourists, including a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars and an excellent French bakery. There is also a good choice of scooter and car hire outlets, convenience stores, craft shops, and also the Te Vara Nui Cultural Centre complex with an "Island Night " ( over water ) that shouldn't be missed.Captian Tama's glass- bottomed boats can also take you out across the lagoon to the outlying motu for snorkelling and a BBQ lunch.
The walk to and from the restaurants from Sokala along the beach ,sometimes paddling in the shallows in places ,depending on the tide,is one of the fabulous experiences of life! ( we would recommend taking a torch at night, to see the small fish which sometimes swim past ).
We are global travellers ,and are sure that this place, and these islands are among the World's best kept secrets!

What don't we like about Sokala ? - LEAVING!!!!

Was just checking in to see how our favourite place on the planet was being reviewed. Was thrilled to see that so many guests are returning yet again! We too have booked our next trip 'home' for spring of 2014!! This will be our 7th trip back to visit our 'family' in Rarotonga!
Although it appears that some guests are disappointed with Sokala, we have travelled extensively and the only place we have returned to 7 times is Sokala! True enough that the villas are showing some wear, a lot of which is climate related. On the flip side, there is no other place we have ever stayed that you are greeted by the owner when you arrive and wished Bon voyage by the owner when you leave, anytime of day or night!!! The owner, Lawrance, is on site 24/7 to attend to all your needs. We have never felt more welcome or safer anywhere that we have travelled! The staff at Sokala do their utmost to ensure you have everything you need while vacationing in paradise! The fact that there are so many returning guests, many who we maintain relationships with across the miles, speaks volumes of Lawrance and all of the staff!!
We can hardly wait to, once again, wiggle our toes in the beautiful white sand on Muri beach, right in front of our villa at Sokala!!!

I've just booked my next stay at Sokala for later this year and I can't wait to get back! This will be my 10th stay there in the last 5 years and it always feels like coming home. If you want a stress free absolutely relaxing beautiful place to stay then this is it. Stepping out on to your private deck with a coffee in the morning and just gazing at the beautiful lagoon and palmtrees on your doorstep is magic. Next a dip in your private pool and a walk down the glorious beach. Muri Lagoon is the best spot in Rarotonga for beauty and privacy. Restaurants, shops and cafe's are just a short walk down the beach. The villas are spacious and comfortable and every one of them has their own BBQ. Granted the Villa's are not new and Lawrance and his staff are constantly upgrading and maintaining them but it's a tropical island on a saltwater lagoon and these things happen. Overall this is a beautiful private quiet place to stay and I would recommend it to everyone!

We've begun the countdown until our next 4 week vacation in paradise. This will be our 5th trip to Rarotonga and our 4th stay at Sokala. There are many reasons we've chosen to return to Sokala repeatedly. The location of this lovely property is perfect for us. It is on a beautiful stretch of beach with a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and shops within easy walking distance. Every time we return, we are welcomed warmly by the wonderful friends we've made who look after everything at Sokala. The villas are spacious, comfortable, just steps from the ocean and they offer a great deal of privacy. Lawrance, the owner, is on site 24/7. He is always willing to provide any assistance, fulfill special requests, and this also results in a very secure and safe environment.
Some reviewers have complained about the lack of swimming in front of Sokala. The water depth depends entirely on the tide which changes daily. This also affects whether or not you can walk on the beach to the restaurants at night. We always walk along the beach at night and just accept that sometimes our feet will get wet. The fact that Sokala is on a tropical island does cause things to weather and deteriorate more quickly. The owner is aware of this fact and is constantly trying to maintain and upgrade the facilities. People who travel to even the most luxurious 5 star properties more than once will have experienced this.
Overall, this is a beautiful, romantic, private and safe place to stay while vacationing in paradise.

I just finished an email to Sokala Villas to book our vacation for next winter. This will be our fifth stay with Lawrance and the staff of Sokala and all I can say is that each visit surpasses the previous. The sheer pleasure of stepping on to the property erases all of the stress and cares of the world back home in Canada. This little resort is located in the most ideal location on all of the beautiful island of Rarotonga. A gorgeous villa right on the lagoon where peace & privacy reigns supreme. The villas are not new, Lawrance and his staff know that some maintenance is required, like most resorts. There will be rust, that's the cost of being situated right on the edge of a salt water lagoon! Give your head a shake if those minor, cosmetic short falls are going to ruin your vacation, suck it up, YOU'RE IN PARADISE! I will chose Sokala Villas over any of the 5 star resorts I have previously experienced. If you're looking for a holiday where you expect someone to be at your elbow with a roll of toilet paper and a kleenex to wipe yor nose for you then definitely head to Mexico and stay at some gaudy, sterile five star resort. Lawrance and his staff treat their guests like family and I love this family of mine, even Suz! The perfect location, the perfect staff, the beauty and the tranquility of my little Eden will ensure that I will be returning year after year for as long as my old carcass will allow.

Room Tip: There are seven beautiful, rustic villas. Some have pools, those without pools are just as cozy and...
