This is the second time I've stayed at Phoebe and Steve's wonderful Retreat. The rooms are clean and well appointed. Each room has lots of privacy with the downstairs rooms having their own outdoor area in the beautiful garden, and the upstairs rooms - amazing sea views. Phoebe and Steve will do anything to help you out and have great recommendations for all you'll want to do in the Cook Islands. Book it and enjoy a wonderful holiday.

My wife and I went to Rarotonga for our honeymoon and chose Muri Retreat for our accommodation initially because we needed a self contained unit. With our special dietary requirements we wanted to be sure we had a kitchenette so we could cook our meals if we needed to.

Muri Retreat was PERFECT! Steve and Phebs are such lovely hosts. They organised a shuttle for us and greeted us when we got there, showed us our apartment (upstairs, number 3), and gave us all the local tips and tricks about the area.

We could not fault this unit - clean, tidy, great decor, stunning views, and great facilities. Its a slight walk up the hill so you can see right out to the water.

The salt water pool they have is just stunning, and they maintain the gardens so well - a variety of tropical plants all around, it is just beautiful!
We loved making friends with the eight or so geckos that were inside and around the apartment - we watched them catching moths at night, they are cute wee creatures!

We would recommend Muri Retreat to anyone and everyone - perfect for solo, couples, groups/families.

There is a great media area down by the pool full of books and dvds and there is a BBQ too. There are laundry facilities to share, and snorkel gear if that takes your fancy.

Honestly cannot fault Steve and Phebs beautiful retreat - 10/10!

Tips:
- To keep ants out of the apartments (we got taken over by them eventually!) triple wrap everything, food is really only safe in the fridge or a fully sealed container.
- Mr Woo's convenience store/petrol pump down the road is great for getting bits and pieces. But if you need to grab a lot of stuff its best to head out to Avarua and get supplies from the supermarket as this is significantly cheaper
- At Muri Beach definitely do the following - kayak around to each island for a look, try a cocktail at Sails, go on the Treddlecat for an hour of fun, have a meal at Sandals Barefoot Bar and Restaurant, go snorkelling to see the beautiful fish, and play with all the dogs that visit.
- Take the bus to Avarua, there are some great shops to get souvenirs and its amazing to see what hustle and bustle is like in the Cook Islands
- We would often spend the day at Muri Beach then the walk back to Muri Retreat got us so hot in the 28 degree heat that the pool was just perfect for a dip! Loved it!

Thank you Steve and Phoebe!

The accommodation was well appointed and clean & tidy. Steve and Phoebe take great care of their property and guests. Just the right balance of being there to help with any questions etc you may have but not intrusive either. A lovely spot on the hillside, only 5 minutes walk to a fantastic beach. We enjoyed the atmosphere of Muri Retreat very much & will stay there again on our next visit to Rarotonga

After arriving on an early morning flight to the Cook Islands in November 2012 we were pleasantly welcomed by hosts, Steve & Phoebe. Had a great stay at Muri Retreat for the duration of 2 weeks and was made to feel at home by the great couple. They were only too happy to answer any questions we had and went out of their way to arrange scooter hire etc (yes Phoebe even watched me shamefully fail my scooter test haha). The property is maintained daily and is ideally situated up from Muri beach, away from all the hotels etc based along Muri beach. Great view from the top balcony and pool a good size to take a dip when you can't be bothered going to the beach. Rooms are spacious and beds comfy. Kitchen well equipped for simple meals when staying in. Would recommend scooter or hire car to explore the island and snorkelling at Fruits of Rarotonga rather than Muri beach. Again the hosts are what make the stay at Muri Retreat great, don't miss the chance to learn how to husk coconuts with Steve and play the Ukelele with Phoebe. Would definately stay here again and look forward to going back to the Cook Islands some day soon. Thanks so much for a great stay Steve & Phoebe :)

We stayed at Muri Retreat for 5 nights in the Onu apartment (ground floor, smallest apartment) and absolutely loved it. For 2 people (on our 6 year anniversary) it was perfect and i wouldn't really call it small-it is the perfect size for 2 people. There is a veranda outside the front of the apartment with table, chairs and umbrella-perfect for breakfast and really private. Loved cooling down in the pool, perfect temperature when you have been baking on the beach all day. Didn't have to share it once, to be honest the whole place has a very serene private feel about it.

When we arrived it was the middle of the night and the taxi driver let us in to our apartment. Super clean and exactly what we wanted and needed. The next day we were met by Steve and Phoebe who greeted us with fresh coconuts with straws in, paw paw and bananas-perfect as were just leaving to go find some breakfast. They were both so knowledgeable and helped us determine where we would want to visit.Gave us some great ideas on where to eat etc and the best idea they gave us was to hire a treddlecat from muri beach instead of going on one of the lagoon cruises. You can walk to the motus from muri beach and the snorkelling in front of muri beach is perfect (best to the left of the beach), they even have people doing massages on the motus for $40-who could ask for a better location than palm trees and sparkling water (way cheaper than being in a room that could be anywhere) The treddlecats are only $15 for 1 hour and so much fun. You can snorkle on your own and get to the motus for a fraction of the price, only thing you are missing out on is the fish bbq.

We absolutely loved staying at Muri Retreat and if we were ever on this side of the world again would book it in a heart beat, perfect location (about 5 min walk down/up a hill from the main road, you can access the beach from any of the side roads and walk to town along the beach) 15min walk to town (total), perfect hosts and perfect apartment.

I have noticed some people have written about there being ants or insects inside the apartment, this only happens if you leave food out. As long as you tidy up after yourself this wont happen-common sense really.

Recommendations-spend the cash on Te Vara Nui Village-absolutely worth it. Eat at Vaimas in Vaimaanga-a must!!The Rickshaw-a new restaurant with delicious food (another recommendation from Phoebe), Snorkel at Aroa beach, dont eat at Captain Andys at the Rarotongan, mistake! Sunset at Titikaveka, Saturday market in Avarua, Sunset cocktails at the Aqua bar at Muri Beach resort- 2 for $12!!!Nowhere beat that and they were definitely the most alcoholic haha. Plus dinner in their restaurant was great. A must is to go to the Mooring, the best smoothies and fish rolls you will ever eat!

Thank you Phoebe and Steve for a wonderful holiday.

Muri Retreat was a pleasure. We were looking to self cater so the room was excellent, with a kitchenette, eating table, bed and bathroom. It was basic but exactly what we needed. The resort is close to the best beach in Rarotonga and we spent all 6 nights on the island at Muri Retreat. It is more secluded (5 minute walk) from the road which has beach access, giving it a more private and quiet feel. The owners were so friendly and we even went on a tour with them one day, giving us a 50% discount because we were with them. We were on the bottom floor (there are 4 apartments, two on ground level and two on top) and had great warm showers with good water pressure. We really recommend the culture evening at Staircase - only 5 dollar entrance and was absolutely spectacular - very impressive.

Room Tip: I presume the top rooms have a view of the sea, but we were very happy on the ground floor.

We want to thank Steve and Phoebe for being such a good hosts. The appartment was really nice, tidy and clean without bugs. We had appartment nr 3 with great view over the ocean, just a few hundred meters away. The appartments have a nice common lounch outside where you can read about things to do, have a bbq, watch tv or take a dive in the (small) swimming pool. The owners always were around everyday to help with questions or making arrangements.
