If seeing Mt. Fuji is on your "must see" list, it certainly is worth a long day's tour from Tokyo. For us, most of the best views came from Hakone Park, which itself was interesting and stunning with it's cable cars, hot springs, etc. Weather is the most important factor. We were told that in September, one typically can see Mt. Fuji only about 12 of the 30 days, so we were quite fortunate. The wetter summer months offer even less viewing probability, while the colder winter months offer the best opportunity by far. When in Tokyo, consider this unique day trip.

Mount Fuji is the symbol of an entire Nation and I wanted to see it when in Tokyo. The day I had booked my tour I didn't know the weather would be misty and foggy and I feared I might not be able to get a chance to see Mount Fuji but the experience was great because the area is simply awesome with Hakone and the Five Lakes region. Our group was made of some 20 people from various parts of the world, mostly Asians and Australians. I was the only European I guess. Well, just enjoy the pics and if in Tokyo, take a tour there, it's Worth it!

On the way to Matsumoto/ Tsumago, we stop for two nights in Kawaguchiko - and while on the way (by bus from Tokyo) the weather was misty and cloudy - the next day was/is superb!
Wake up this morning, remove the curtains and
there IT was: majestic and splendid as in all those pics I've seen before!
Please note that Lake Kawaguchiko provides many excellent viewpoints for gazing at the mountain;
Useless to say - we took pics again and again and will always treasure the memory of spending a gorgeous day around Fuji San.

We did not see Fuji, but we observed natural hot springs and smoking earth under the dripping rain. Ate some black eggs (overrated) and went down the mountain cursing the damned weather which spoiled long-planned sightseeing trip for us. Still I would recommend to travel to this park, but listen to the people who sell you the train tickets in Tokyo - they warned us about the bad weather conditions. There was no turning back for us, however, because we have reserved ryokan much in advance. You need to do it, if you want to stay in a traditional Japanese inn.

Visited the National Park on 4 October 2013. Not exactly just a park but comprise several beautiful quaint little townships.

Happen to be a cold day but we enjoyed every moment. The only dissapointment is Mt Fuji was hidding behind a thick mist. A reason to go back? Perhaps 2 days. There are many nice hotels with oisens snuggled among prestine natural surroundings.

We took the Odakyu Romantic Reserved Car train and the Hakone 2 day pass enabled us to move on our own through all kinds if transport easily ... buses, trains, cable cars, trams and guess what ... a 'pirate ship' within the Park.

A word of caution. The Odakyu Romantic Car train from Tokyo is not exactly like what you see on their brochure. However the train ride was comfortable, efficient and relatively inexpensive.
