“Big traditional Japanese rooms with nice view of the lake”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2014

Stayed there for 2 days as part on 18th and 19th May. The rooms were large traditional rooms with great views of the lake and there was both an open-air onsen like bath as well as an indoor one. Breakfast was extensive although food quality could be better. There were some facilities like table tennis, internet and wi-fi (only at lobby) available but its kind of old. Nevertheless, not much complains and I enjoyed myself. They stick to the timing for breakfast and dinner very strictly though so one cannot be late. Some of the rooms/areas might be a little dusty so not suitable for those who are very sensitive. Will stay again.

This hotel was a strange mix of concrete and traditional Japanese style. The breakfast (not included) was extensive in a huge, rather faded dining room- quite a fun experience with lovely staff. The bedroom had great views over the lake- you can't see Fuji from this angle though. Lovely matt floors and balcony/view room, with tea provided at a low seated table. The best thing about the place was the outdoor onken bath on the roof- recently built and beautiful. There's an indoor one too if you prefer. This absolutely made the hotel for us and you could sit in the bath and see the lake.
The less great thing about the hotel was the toilet smelled fairly strongly- needed more of a clean.
NB- we went in May and lots of the local restaurants were closed- you need to pre book dinner in the hotel if you want it...the breakfast was ok- large but luke warm (buffet).

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the better the view.

I enjoyed my stay at this traditional Japanese hotel. It was a completely different experience vs. other hotels in Japan. However it's difficult for me to judge whether the other traditional hotels in the area are better or worse than this.

What's good:
* rooms are Japanese style with tatami mats. have a balcony overlooking the lake which means you wake up to gorgeous views in the morning after a very comfortable sleep on the tatami mats (mattresses are provided).
* the lobby has a very cozy feeling and worth spending time there in evenings. wi-fi is available in lobby only but speed is fantastic
* while some reviewers complained about food, my group and I actually liked our dinner at this hotel. you have to let them know in advance about being vegetarian and maybe mention a few things you can eat. breakfast menu though is limited for those looking for an english / continental breakfast.
* Overall staff (concierge, restaurants, onsen) is extremely polite and courteous; only the front desk can be unresponsive and frustrating at times.
* I did not go for the onsen (traditional bath) but those members of my group who went had mixed feelings about it. That depends on how comfortable you are with group baths and nothing specific to the hotel.

What's not so good:
* The hotel can get very crowded with large tourist groups as they seems to cater mostly to that segment as opposed to individual travelers. Such groups can be noisy at times and dispel the peace of the place. For example when we were dining in one of the restaurants, a Malaysian group came in and they created so much ruckus that it was difficult to have the rest of our dinner in peace.
* Not much around the hotel; one can walk near the lake areas but if the weather is cold then its avoidable
* The elevator of the hotel is an old one - small and very slow. Best not to carry heavy luggage when visiting. Using the stairs should be your preferred option here.
* The hotel can do with some refurbishment in their corridors as well as restaurants.

Location excellent - a walk away from Lake Kawaguchi . Not much else to do around apart from enjoy the beuaty . Rooms are Japanese with tatami beds - a wonderful experience . Spa available in the hotel . Computer in the lobby is available free of charge for guests . Breakfast very disappointing - only Japanese . Overall a great experience - recommended .
