“Great introduction to the ryokan experience”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

Very friendly staff. We had the suite with the private onsen and a swinging chaise chair. The onsen was wonderfully hot. The room was well heated, though the bathroom was perpetually cold. Our first night kaiseki was mediocre at best, but the second night was much improved. The western breakfast was excellent with a chicken/tofu salad that was great. We were in Kawaguchiko probably two weeks before everything was going to be in bloom which would have made the ryokan, already beautiful from the outside, spectacular.

Room Tip: One of the suites with private onsens

The one and only flaw (as far as I am concerned) is the lack of a view of Mt Fuji from the rooms, though anyone searching for reviews of the inn would have known this.

Even though there is a bus that will take you to a stop near the inn, all you need to do is to approach the tourist information office at the train station and get them to call the inn for you. A word of advice, do not check in too late. Yumedono has a strict dinner time and if you are late you will miss dinner. In most other places in Japan, there is a check-in procedure that requires you to fill in forms and have a copy of your passport made. Yumedono does away with the need for a copy of the passport and the forms for check-in are actually done via email when you book your accommodation.

Yumedono has several types of accomodations. A higher western/Japanese mix type wing and a regular western/Japanese or tatami style wing as well as a cheaper hostel style annex across the road. My companion and I took a regular tatami style room for 2 nights. Both the higher end and regular type rooms come with a hot spring bath in the attached (small) garden. There are, if I recall correctly, 8 regular style rooms. Each room is approached from a common wooden floored corridor. Each room has it's own name and a sliding door that opens to a small alcove and the main door that leads into the room entry way. The room itself is separated into several areas. A small 'sitting room' with a sliding panels looking into the common corridor and a main 'bedroom/sitting' area. A small room off the entry way contains the W.C. The garden with the outdoor bath, and a bathroom with an indoor bath and a dressing room attached to the bathroom.

Dinner is served in the main sitting room and are kaiseki style. The food was served in courses and despite the portion sizes, it is actually quite filling. The quality of the food is good and fresh and as is befitting of kaiseki style meals, simple and beautifully presented. After dinner you are invited to move into the smaller sitting area and the sliding doors are closed as the main room is cleared, prepared and the futons taken out to 'convert' it for sleeping.

Breakfast time is prearranged the night before and set up in the small sitting area so that when you get up it is there waiting for you when you slide open the doors. Breakfast itself is generous and hearty.

Despite having a hot spring bath in the room, you can also opt to use the large public bath in the annex building. The public bath, as is implied is open to the users from all styles of rooms and the general public who pay a fee. The men's bath sports an indoor pool and a series of stepped pools outdoors. The water flows from a source above the top pool and down to the lowers ones. Thus if you prefer a hot soak use the upper baths as the lower ones are a little more tepid.

The service staff at the ryokkan are quiet and unobtrusive. You know they are around, but you don't see them or hear them as they go about their business. There is one 'serving maid' per room who sees to the set up of the room and the serving of the meals, thus service is quite personalised.

You actually get more noise from the guest moving in and out of the building. This makes the inn a very pleasant place to stay if you are looking for a quiet place to relax and rest. Unlike most ryokkan hotels you don't have many screaming kids or guest talking as they move down the corridors. English however is quite limited so as long as no complicated questions are needed you should get along fine.

I went to this ryokan after going to the Mikawaya Ryokan in Hakone - had a gone BEFORE, it would be a different story. This place is not a real ryokan, it is commercialised and the food pales in comparison to genuine ryokans. It is in a very touristy location and so inevitably the place itself is touristy. This is not where you want to go to have the traditional ryokan experience.

The hotel is really good. Rooms are great traditional japanese style with the plus of having your private onsen in the garden which is really cool.

The staff is on the standard japanese service (that is very good) but they don´t speak much english so you need patience and creativity to get yourself understood.

The breakfast in room was such an interesting experience. They don´t have occidental option and I thought it was going to be great since I really love japanese food. But no, it wasn´t. Japanse breakfast for me personally is a no no.

The area is horrible. It may be that we were there off season but it was all closed and the few things opened weren´t very interesting. Due to the weather we didn´t even see the Mt Fuji!

The service made all the difference! We stayed 3 nights here and had a wonderful experience. This is a traditional Ryokan where you have your private room and private onsen tub in your backyard. The setting is very calming and private, perfect for some quiet time and relaxation.

The Housekeepers are very polite and very helpful, although most of them cannot converse in English, they try to communicate and are very patient. Food is fantastic. Both dinner and breakfast are served in your own room and the presentation is every bit as enjoyable as the taste.

The location is a bit far from everything, but the ryokan car driver can be utilized to send/pick up guests to the nearby train station with no extra charge.

The ryokan, due to the fact that it has no waiting area/lobby, would only allow check-in after 3pm. We've arrived a bit early and had to stand in the parking lot to wait. It would be better to arrive after 3pm to have a more pleasant check-in experience.

Room Tip: 1. Arrive after 3 p.m. to avoid waiting out in the yard. 2. The breakfast and dinner time is rigid...

It's a little out of the way and in an isolated town with very few options for activities or dining. The room and onsen are absolutely beautiful and were my favorite in all the places that we stayed. Definitely get breakfast and even dinner.
