Mar Vista Cottages

Mar Vista is such a beautiful place. We stayed for 2 nights in a lovely cabin with whitewashed walls, sparkling white linen, a cosy stove and fresh eggs in the morning supplied by our hosts, Tom and Renata. We had a beautiful view of the sea from the cabin window during the day and a spectacular view of the stars at night. Who needs TV?!? The local supermarket is really well stocked (for the stuff you don't find in the lovely organic veggie patch) - it has all you will need when catering for yourself and does great picnic supplies for your days out to the nearby beach or the coast for walks. Tom and Renata take such great care of their guests - they are made for the hospitality business. Only one downside to Mar Vista - its not close enough to Scotland for us to visit more often!

Tom and Renata, the present "Stewards of Mar Vista" have created a place that actually enhances the natural & wild beauty of the area. The cottages are simple and lovely and so comfortable. We had a gas fireplace that warmed our cottage at night. There is a flower garden where you can pick flowers for your cabin. An organic vegie garden where you can pick all kinds of vegies for your evening meal. They have about 100 chickens that lay the most delicious eggs I have ever tasted. Tom gatheres them every day. We were invited to join him and I really enjoyed getting to know the chickens as I gathered eggs. If you leave a basket on the peg outside your cottage door Tom or Renata will leave eggs in your basket. You can have as many as you want! We stayed in Cottage 5. We had an ocean view from the front and forest view in the back. Just a few steps behind our cottage was a path that led down into the most beautiful redwood forest. We followed the path down to a stream surrounded by ferns and clovers and towering redwoods. A magical forest. We took the beach path across the street down to the beach where a small waterfall made it's way to the beach with flowers and clovers growing out from crevices in the rocks. The next day we walked along the Stornetta Public Lands near the Pt Arenas Lighthous just a short trip up Hwy 1. We toured the lighthouse which has an interesting history, and walked for about 2 miles south on the Public Lands right on the cliffs over looking a beautiful rocky coast. At night we sat outside on our adirondack chairs under a night sky of thousands of stars and the milky way. We also met Maggie and Rascal the dogs in residence and the 3 goats Lola, Pygmalian, and Prof Higgins. We absolutely loved this place and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Visit their website which has a good description of the cottages and where they are located. Depend...

We ADORE this place. Here's the basic setup: cute little cottages, each with it's own kitchen, no tv, no phones, but wi-fi (because even when we unplug we may want to stay a little connected), a garden you can pick from, and fresh eggs every morning from their chickens!

This is where busy professionals go to relax and drop into a lower gear. There are beautiful nature walks, good casual dining nearby. bowling ball beach (look it up) and abalone diving should you be so bold. They've got a fire pit, a barbecue grill, and a hammock to facilitate your stay. Tom and Renata strike a perfect balance between being unobtrusive hosts who leave you in peace and somehow show up when you might need something. Last time we were up we were barbecuing as the evening light began to fade... Tom showed up to be sure we knew where the outdoor lights were.

DO have at least one of your meals in the Glass House and do make it up the road to Frannie's Cup and Saucer for a pastry. Also, if you're a serious cook you may be happier if you bring your own sharp knife. They provide everything you need for a kitchen but we always bring a sharp knife, some olive oil and a couple lemons. There's a general store nearby if you don't want to be bothered.

Room Tip: Be sure to look at the map on their website. Cabin 9 and those up the hill have the best view of th...

We visited Mar Vista for the second time recently. The first time we had only one child. This time we had two. The beauty of Mar Vista is that singles, couples and families alike can enjoy the property peacefully. There is enough space for everyone. The cottages are simple yet sophisticated and very, very cozy. I've never truly rested like I do while there. The proprietors are present when you need them and know how to allow their guests ample space. Children and adults both seem to enjoy collecting the eggs each evening. What a delight to find the basket on your door. We love to collect organic greens, herbs and beautiful nasturtiums to serve with our morning eggs. We discovered three fabulous restaurants and one bakery this trip. Tom and Renata's recommendations have always been spot on. Nearby beaches are enjoyable for walking, playing and exploring. Lola the goat is as charming as a goat could be. As I was enjoying much-needed alone time on the hammock (with a distant view of the ocean), Lola walked underneath, scratched her back, batted her eyelashes, and went on her way. There are so many wonderful spots on the property to sit back and throughly enjoy life. The beds, pillows and comforters are absolutely perfect for peaceful sleep. The cottages and property are perfectly groomed, maintained and thoroughly clean. This is truly a magical place where beautiful memories are made and never forgotten. We did not wish to leave.

Room Tip: We've stayed in 1 and 2 bedroom cottages and both were just perfect. Parents with small childre...

My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon here and I can't say enough good things about Mar Vista, or its lovely owners. There is a luxury through simplicity achieved here. The grounds are gorgeous, fresh, open and soothing. We loved the goats, the private beach, the chickens, the hammocks, the view of the ocean from our cottage and our accommodations. For anyone looking to unplug from their real life a little bit and find some peace and quiet with a view, this is the place.

Cottages are somewhat basic but nice & clean. Easy drive to various local sites and attractions. Not exactly a cliffside view from the property, but some parts of the property have a nice view of coastline a ways away. 10-15 minute walk/climb to the nearest beach.

Plan to cook: Fresh-laid eggs and pick-it-yourself organic veggies are delicious. Adds to the experience.

We would definitely go back.

This was our first visit to the Mar Vista cottages and we'd love the chance to go back and stay again! The cottages are charmingly and thoughtfully furnished -- retro, sunny, very clean and tidy, and nicely updated with modern kitchen appliances and plumbing. Renata and Tom have supplied the kitchens with plenty of items if you opt to cook in. They were friendly and helpful hosts, with great recommendations on local restaurants, hikes, wineries, sights, etc. Our cottage was peaceful and quiet -- we were in a cottage well up from the road, but overall, nighttime road traffic seemed to be light. In addition, there's access to the shore and down the road a short walk, and fantastic scenery along this stretch of the coast.

We loved the organic garden and option to help ourselves from it, as well as the fresh eggs available each day (we made ourselves salads and eggs each morning). Collecting eggs with Tom from was also a highlight of our stay. Though it didn't apply to us for this visit, we suspect the MV Cottages would be a great option for families with kids, given all the natural wonders to see and explore. We loved this place!
