Our family of 6 was looking for a break from the typical sightseeing hustle and bustle. We thought it might be fun to try a cooking class. We received much more than that! They opened their home and their hearts. We learned so much about Turkish food and preparation, but we also asked questions we had about just about anything. We laughed and the day sped by - we were sad to say goodbye knowing we probably would never have a chance to come back. This is a special TREAT that you don't want to miss.
Could not ask more and could not expect more from a lunch. Everything from A-Z was just great, delicious & unforgettable ! The warm & friendly welcome at the entrance, the setup, the taste of every single item, the typical traditional Turkish music from the radio and and and... Tolga and his family give their best to feel you like you are in the middle of a feast topped with mother Havva's (grandmother of three lovely kids) dolaz !
Looking forward to come back...
We had a lovely evening with Tolga and his wonderful family when we visited Cappadocia. The restaurant was being renovated so Tolga very kindly invited us to cook in their lovely house instead.
We learnt how to make a variety of traditional local dishes, such as lentil soup, stuffed aubergines, and a particular favourite of ours, manti (Turkish dumplings). This was followed by a truly delicious feast consisting of everything we had cooked and more!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Cappadocia!
What better way to experience local life than to cook a traditional meal, and then eat it with the hosts? Tolga, his wife Tuba, and his mother Havva will charm and delight you - and put you to work cooking the best meal you will experience in Turkey.
You'll start with Turkish tea and cinnamon cookies, then move on to preparing and eating a 4 course meal all the while laughing and comparing stories of cooking and family life with your hosts. Their garden is completely organic, and provides the vegetables and herbs for your meal. You'll prepare your meal in the kitchen annex, then enjoy it (depending on the weather) either outdoors or inside, where you'll marvel at the traditional cave home. Your afternoon will fly by, and before you know it it's time to leave, but not without making memories and Turkish friends to last a lifetime.
Even if you're a novice in the kitchen, as one member of our group was, under Hevaa and Tuba's expert guidance you'll be cooking in no time. Don't speak much Turkish? No worries, just follow their lead and you'll be just fine. The most interesting part were the proportions - one cup of flour was exactly that - one coffee cup, no measuring cups were used. The secret of these fabulous meals lie in the freshness of the ingredients and in their proportions, so don't be concerned if you don't see any measuring cups or spoons.
For those who prefer exact measurements, a spiral bound cookbook containing recipes for the food you prepared (plus more recipes, 16 in all) is available for purchase separately. No pressure, they just tell you it's available. There are also some local handicrafts (beautiful weaving and women's tatted headscarves) available for sale.
In our 4 tripsTurkey, this was one of the best side trips we have ever taken - you won't regret it.
This is an authentic local experience, hosted by Tolga, the owner of Cappadocia Home Cooking school. Given the restaurant was being expanded when we visited, we were invited into Tolga's home that he shares with his wife, mother and children. We chose to take on an observer role rather than get hands on, but you would be able to be more involved in the larger restaurant kitchen. Tolga's family are delightful - his mother is very attentive and did most of the cooking. We sat down to a feast of local dishes, which we were told came from the cook book they produced - you will undoubtedly end up buying a few. If you're gluten free - you're going to struggle - this country lives on bread and pastries!
Our tour guide Tunc Ilada brought us here to have lunch and we were so grateful because it was totally worth the drive. Food was superb, really great flavors, really authentic turkish food, our Hosts were so kind, Mother was specially wonderful, she is so nice and beautiful. It was by far the greatest food we've had in Turkey ! We really enjoyed our meal and our time here...
