“Quant little row of houses”
Reviewed May 3, 2009

The Tuishuise was a unique experience, going back in time in an old house with antique furniture. If you're in to modern furniture this is not for you, but we slept in a house that apparently had Cecil John Rhodes's bed, or something to that effect. The dinner was served at the Victoria Manor Hotel, with live entertainment. Lovely country atmosphere.

We wanted to find an overnight, somewhere no more than 400km from where we were staying in Saint Francis Bay, and really just stumbled upon this awesome little hotel. I'm so glad we did.

The hotel is made up of real little houses. Each house has been beautifully restored with lovely antiques.

Even though it was just my husband and myself staying at Die Tuishuise, we were given a full little house complete with a tiny kitchen, 'stoep', lounge, entrance room, back garden, dining room, 2 bedrooms and two bathrooms, complete with ball and claw tubs. We stayed in number 50, and would recommend it

The whole place had a lovely feel to it, and the little details made it special. The dining room featured a bookshelf full of books, two old coat-stands and a typewriter. We had fresh flowers throughout our house.

We enjoyed dinner in the Manor House - it was great - real Karoo lamb, chicken, pork and a full spread of vegetables were offered from the buffet, the price was very reasonable and the staff very helpful.

I would recommend this hotel as a great experience. We left before breakfast, unfortunately, but I would have loved to have stayed a day or two to experience more Karoo hospitality.

The Tuishuise is, in fact, not one but a set of old "town house" cottages in Karoo backwater Cradock (your centre for Mountain Zebra National Park and little else) in the Eastern Cape. The cottages form the majority of a period street behind the equally-period Victoria Manor hotel and vary in size and grandeur; but each has been painstakingly and beautifully restored with period decor, furnishing and antiques by the Manor's owner, an English grande-dame of the old school. Each has its own kitchen and is fully equipped to allow self-catering, or breakfast and dinner can be taken at the Manor.

We loved our grand house (Butlers) - from layout through furniture to decor, a real taste of Victorian period living and very nice to have one's own front door. Unfortunately (and we were assured this was a Tuishuise first-ever) we encountered unpleasant insect life in the kitchen on our first night and decamped to the hotel overnight while the problem was addressed. All kindness & understanding was shown; alternatives offered and the night refunded and we returned for the second night and had no further problem; though the incident did slightly cloud the stay.

The Tuishuise and Victoria Manor are a real throwback in time to an age of gracious colonial-style living in which little has changed since 1939 and not much sine 1914 - decor, atmosphere, courtesy, style; all are there in spades. The cooking at Victoria Manor is old-fashioned in the best way. The proprietor is present and is courtesy personified. All this is done, not in some fake, folksy National Trust "recreate-the-past" way but with utter unselfconsciousness and the ethos that this is the way things worked well in the past and if done properly will continue to serve well in the future.

There's nothing quite like it. Go.
