This was one of the most peaceful and soul satisfying holidays we have ever had! First Tony and Jan are perfect hosts. They really care about their guests, they give you fantastic advice, they are fun, and are very helpful. They help with shopping and getting a licence and take you to their favourite restaurants. They are also very proud of Laborie and are well integrated into this lovely and warm community. Second, the tree house is pure paradise. The open plan kitchen, deck area and lounge area is all kitted out in wood. There is a brilliant hanging bed which we spent ages lolling around in and watching hummingbirds at the feeder. Sometimes hummingbirds would fly across the kitchen ! What is great is that at night you can sleep in a 'normal room with doors and windows in a very comfortable bed. The views to the trees and the beach is stunning. Third the village with its lovely beach and the community are really lovely. We are back only a short time and are pining for our tree house, for Jan and Tony and for our hummingbird filled tree house
The Bay Treehouse is a two-person beach-side standalone palace built by the caring and competent couple Jan and Tony Collinson.
It deserves a rating of 7 out of 5, if only that were possible! Read the reviews. When was the last time you saw a modestly priced place with a universal rating of 5 out of 5?
Here's the thing about the Caribbean Sea, to which I have traveled regularly for 40 years: big cruise ships, big all-inclusive resorts, big crowds, big traffic, big prices -- all have contributed to undermining the attractiveness of many islands. Used to be that you could find unassuming local people, reasonably priced local food, magical uncrowded beaches, etc. That's much harder now.
St. Lucia is sadly afflicted with dense tourism (particularly around Castries) but if you go to Laborie Bay at the south end of the island you'll find old-style Caribbean. It's a fishing village. Few tourists. An empty, perfect beach. People, food and ambience almost entirely untouched by progress.
The Bay Treehouse is so exceptional that I imagine we'll go there (or to its adjacent sister property, Driftwood By The Beach) every year. Occupancy hovers near 100% so we're already checking 2019 flights so we can book. Jan and Tony LOOK AFTER YOU. It's personal and friendly service taken to an extreme.
I picked the Treehouse and Laborie for my husband and I as we wanted an authentic Caribbean experience. We got that and so much more. From hanging out in the outdoor space on the daybed watching the humming birds, hearing the sounds of Laborie and staring at the beautiful ocean and big white fluffy clouds. Tony and Jan went out of their way to make our stay fabulous. Our experiences were so varied: from local chief Linkar catching and cooking us local lobster, to a relaxing massage by Barbara, to dinner at Mama Tilly's, to the beautiful beach and clear ocean waters, to the wonderful people of Laborie including Wilson at Salt Rush Cafe on the beach, Quill who runs the local Steel Pan band and Figaro who cleans the beach every day. If you want to get to know the Caribbean and it's people come and stay with Tony and Jan!
Amazing accommodation in a brilliant location! We loved our treehouse and spent huge amount of time simply watching the hummingbirds and lizards. It was often hard to even drag ourselves down to the beautiful, quiet beach only moments away. On the few times we felt the need to escape, Tony has a decent 4x4 to use for very reasonable rates and he collected us from the airport (with a stop to stock up on provisions) and dropped us off for our return flight - so really wouldn't recommend hiring a car. A bonus is that the airport is barely 15 mins away. We'll be back!
After staying in Driftwood cottage(reviewed on even better than hoped part 1) for 6 nights we moved up in the world(literally) to Bay Treehouse for 7 nights.
The beautiful Treehouse consists of outside living area(all under roof) with all the mod-cons(including small plunge pool and sun deck with 2 large loungers). Air conditioned bedroom/bathroom are a separate unit reached by a small walkway from the living area.
The Treehouse is(if possible) even more relaxing than Driftwood. Being 15 feet off the ground(in the trees) you get too experience even more hummingbirds. The most we saw at one time was 8-10 birds fighting for their place at the feeder.
Whilst staying in the Treehouse Tony and Jan (the owners) organized a trip around the west coast of St Lucia on a Catamaran from the jetty in Laborie.
They also were with us several times during our stay when we ate out at local restaurants
If you are looking for a relaxing holiday away from all the highly priced tourist resorts. Look no further than one of Tony and Jan's properties(Treehouse, Driftwood, Mango Splash) in Laborie for a taste of real St Lucia.
Thanks again Tony and Jan for 2 weeks in Laborie we will never forget.
Will we be back ?....You bet we WILL :0)
PS: Give our love to all the dogs....especially FOXY ;0)
The facilities were ideal, allowing us to have a true open-air environment with all of the promised amenities. Between the plunge pool in the treehouse and the fan in the bedroom we were able to stay cool without needing A/C. The suspended bed in the living area was very relaxing. Our hosts Tony and Jan became instant friends and were extremely generous with regards to advice, transportation, and help whenever we needed it. The treehouse is right in the very un-touristy village of Laborie (as well as 100 yards from the beach), and the villagers proved to be always friendly. We also enjoyed the daily football games at the nearby field. This lodging gives you complete immersion into the sights, sounds, and smells of this fishing village. The sounds of dogs barking and roosters crowing at night can sometimes be annoying (earplugs are actually provided!), and expect some mosquitoes (netting also provided).
We stayed in the Bay Treehouse in April and what a fantastic place Tony and Jan have built. We loved sitting on the swing bed in the living area in the afternoon and listen to the birds. We both relaxed and slowly forgot about work.
Not only have Tony and Jan built a fantastic place, they also organise weddings. They organised our renewal of wedding vows on the 6th April, which was perfect, and a day to remember. The day was so much more than a ceremony within a resort where multiple weddings occur daily unless you are prepared to pay top money. Although even then, we are not sure whether it would beat our experience, alongside staying in the Bay Treehouse.
We are torn between advertising the Bay Treehouse as the best place to stay in St Lucia if you don’t want to be surrounded by tourists and keeping it a secret as then we can easily book again.
Many thanks Tony and Jan. Apologies for the delay in writing the review.
