We came from cold/wet Bergen Norway looking for paradise. We found it in Laborie on the first part of our stay in Driftwood. The small cottage is lovely, and has everything you need for a relaxing stay(away from the all the big resorts with all the tourists) on St Lucia.
In Driftwood you feel part of the community. The locals would pass by saying good morning/good afternoon/good night(depending on what time of day it was), and always asking how we were enjoying our stay in Laborie.
Tony and Jan who own Driftwood, Mango Splash + Bay Treehouse(reviewed on better than we hoped part 2) are excellent hosts offering advice and tips on what to do/where to eat/organizing excursions.
Don't bother renting a car while you are staying here. Tony has a car which can be borrowed at a very reasonable rate.
Choosing too stay in Driftwood means you have to like dogs:- Tony and Jan are involved in the rescue and upkeep of some of the stray dogs in Laborie. All the dogs are really friendly, only looking for a bit of affection(and maybe a bit of ham from the fridge for breakfast)
The terrace outside the cottage is where we spent many a happy hour. Drinking the local(excellent) Piton beer whilst watching the hummingbirds on the bird feeder.
If you want the real St Lucia then stay in Laborie at one of Tony and Jan's properties
Thanks again Tony and Jan for two unforgettable weeks.
Such a beautiful property and town! My girlfriend and I stayed here for 7 days in July and it was the wonderful. Tony and Jan treated us like family! From picking us up at the airport to their food and activity recommendations, they were spot on. Laborie is great town. For those of you who prefer to experience more than just a chain hotel and the typical hotel grounds (pool, shows and swim up bars) you will not be disappointed. The location of the property is perfect. 50 yards to ocean and a short 5 minute walk to everything you need in town. The people of Laborie are kind and the town has everything you need. The bakery is delicious with great prices. A real highlight was when Tony arranged for a local fisherman (Lincar) to cook us a grilled lobster dinner with all local side dishes. And he cleaned the kitchen!! We also hiked the Piton with Charlie! Lastly, we went on snorkel cruise out of the dock in laborite. Amazing! on the way back we had the catamaran all by ourselves!!!
Overall, if you are looking for a more private vacation, away from many tourists in hotels, and want to experience the island feel. Look no further!
Well this is very easy to wright. If you want to live in the community and experience the true culture of St Lucia this is it. If you want to laze on the beech soaking up the sun swimming in water the same temperature as the air this it. If you want a solid base to explore from; this is it. Your hosts Tony and Jan will become friends. They support you to make links with the community by introducing you and helping. Any problem Tony will sort it out. Tony supported me to have a sixtieth birthday party. We invited other people who were staying in the Treehouse and Mango Splash together with some friends from the community a goodnight was had by all. A local celebrity chef Lincoln cooked us lobster which he court himself; yes he is a celebrity fisherman too!
This is a really nice place to stay with nice little well thought out extras and the whole place is very pleasing to the eye. I had a hire car but that was a bit of a waste as Tony will rent you his for excursions. We did a boat snorkelling excursion for the jetty. Guess who sorted that?We also visited a former sugar plantation.
We stayed In driftwood a cottage very Lucian. Nice veranda to sit out with garden. A proper home from home nice.
Bits to get used to in Laborie sudden music any time. Tree frogs at night to lull you to sleep and roosters to wake you in the morning. Every person will want you to greet them with a good morning, hello or evening.
Question will I be back? You bet already booked.
The accommodation was perfect for our needs and was a few lazy footsteps to the beach. Tony & Jan were amazing hosts and very knowledgeable. They did everything in their means to make our stay memorable. Thank you.
We had a lovely, colourful and very relaxing time in Laborie, staying in Driftwood for a week – which was a bit ‘Death in Paradise’ without the death part – just a veranda, a sweet little tropical garden and a few coconut palms separating you from the beach. It even had a visiting gecko. You could see (and hear) the sea from there, and watch the world go by. It was really imaginatively decorated and although fairly small, had everything we needed and was in fact quite luxurious inside, with a lovely tall shower-room where you could see the stars and a large four-poster bed with antique bedposts. The table outside on the veranda was perfect for a leisurely breakfast and lunch, and there were some very good authentic restaurants in the village for dinner – Mama Tilly’s, Salt Rush (Wilson’s place by the sea) and Mama Rose’s on the square all ticked the right boxes, and we managed to catch a chicken roti at Zoe’s (the blue place by the football pitch!), which was really tasty. It was worth getting up early to catch the market on Saturday to stock up on fruit. The buses were quite fun to use – very reasonable prices, not at all hot or stuffy, and friendly local passengers! The Balenbouche Estate was a fascinating place to visit – and if you get the chance to go for an evening meal, we’d recommend you take it! All in all, a really magical experience and a great base from which to experience the real St Lucia.
Tony and Jan were the perfect hosts - very friendly and hospitable - we couldn't have wished for more. The decor in the hut was brilliant- very inspiring, and their future building projects are exciting and original.
Thank you both so much - sorry we have taken so long to respond.

My husband and I loved Driftwood and loved staying in Laborie. The cottage is so charming and perfectly equipped for your every need. The owners are lovely people and attentive to their guests. We spent 8 nights there and were very comfortable. It was great to sit on our porch every day, watching the hummingbirds, patting the dogs and enjoying life in this peaceful place. We were part of a large group and many of the others thought we definitely had the best spot.
