“This is why we travel- a hidden gem”
Reviewed January 2, 2014 via mobile

All of the positives reviews are accurate. Let me start off by saying this was our first stop outside of Paris and we had "issues" getting the rental car and on the right road. We were running late getting here, and I was emailing with Isabelle from my phone letting her know. She had dinner ready for us upon arrival. In fact, when we walked in, she had a glass of wine waiting for us.

During our stay they made the most amazing vegetarians meals for us. The bread is made here daily in a 70 year old oven, Isabelle is the fourth generation running this Hotel, her daughter seems to be ready to take the helm at any time.

We were here for New Years Eve and enjoyed a four hour meal capped by ringing in the new year with half the village that had joined Mendi for the celebration.

We chose Mendi as it was centrally located to exploring the Basque Country. 20 mins from St Jean du Port, 30 mins to Bayonne etc.

The Spa is a steam room, sauna and a pool with cardio equipment. It was actually larger than I expected.

The negative comments in some reviews, I feel are folks who are being too picky.

This village hotel is run by a warm family who without trying, makes you feel like you are staying with your own family ( only without the crazy Uncle).

The upside to Trip Advisor is that others will discover Mendi. The downside to Trip Advisor is that it won't be my little secret.

As a business owner, I can appreciate how much work goes on behind the scene, and I am amazed on how easy Isabelle makes it look. That tells you a lot right there.

Experiences like this is why we travel.

Merci.

As a regular user of nice and 3 or 4 * hotels and fancy restaurants I would have never tried Mendi Alde without the numerous praises and compliments from various sites this one included. I can only join them and add my voice to all those praises. The place is simple, very comfortable and managed by friendly competent professionals. The Spa ultra clean and design and a great addition for the hikers we are. The view on the Baioula Mountain is best enjoyed from the terrasse of the restaurant where al fresco diner can be served. The chef and owner cooks great food (great local lamb cooked in the wood burning oven - my wife enjoyed the fresh fish cooked with veggies in a curcuma sauce) and fabulous deserts...yum !

Room Tip: The view is to the North towards the mountain - September/October in the Basque country is often gre...

We selected the hotel from Logis. Very welcoming at reception, help with our luggage to the second floor (top), good size room overlooking main road. Slight concern as it was warm and we would need the windows open but little or no traffic overnight. Bath with hand held shower. Excellent restaurant, great food generous portions. Garden will be great work currently underway. Good off road parking and great rural strolls in the evening. Highly recommended.

Lovely hotel in a quiet village with super views of the mountains. Good location for walking and cycling but no village shop for picnic provisions. Really friendly owners - quick and efficient service with a relaxed atmosphere.Small but comfortable room & the plumbing worked!. Food on the half-board deal was delicious & genuinely 'of the region.' Weather was great for outdoor activities so didn't get round to trying out the spa facilities.

Mendi Alde is an excellent place to stay to be near St Jean but not with the crowds.
Warm welcome, clean but rather small room (62 euros)and large dining room with patio to eat outside if conveniant.
The food was excellent and delicios but I felt the menus of 18 and 26 euro were overpriced for what they offered. The wine list had no cheaper wines.
Breakfast was excellent with many choices (8euro). The newly baked breads and cakes were delicious and excellent value. Worth coming for breakfast alone (that is if one does not want an anglo-saxon cooked one).

Mendi Aldi was our second stop on a week in Bordeaux. We chose it for the location which was excellent, we had some fantastic drives up into the Pyrannees. The room was modern & clean. The food on a half board basis was terrific, nothing was too much trouble, we tasted all the specialities of the area, drank good wine & the bill was very reasonable.

We stayed at the Mendi Aldi for 3 nights hoping to have a nice break away from working at our house in the Charente Maritime! Arriving at the hotel in torrential rain we managed to find the car park behind the hotel and walked up a very muddy path to the door.

We were met by the owner who was extremely helpful and very friendly. Our room was on the first floor and was very clean and acceptable although it seemed to be in the middle of renovations. There were bare electric wires outside our room and no visibility of a fire alarm.

We had booked half-board and the dinner on the first night (as on the following two nights) was excellent although the meat/fish portions for half-board seemed to be half the size of someone going for a la carte! The only disappointing side to the hotel for us (apart from the weather) was the breakfasts! We could choose from cornflakes (only tiny bowls to put them in though), yoghurt or fruit and fruit juice with two different breads (no croissants) and preserves. There was cheese of course but nothing else.

Although a sauna, jacuzzi and swimming pool are featured on various websites about the hotel we could find no evidence of either. Another guest had asked about the swimming pool and was told it was being renovated!

Would we go back......................... yes probably when the weather is better and if we were in that part of France.
