Even before coming, I saw its photos in some guidebook and Web sites. When I was right in front of it, I was indeed amazed. THis was huge and so beautiful. Lovely.

This is a piece of outstanding art work from the ancent.

This can be the single reason to go to Mahabalipuram.

Arjuna's penance is a giant open air bas relief (built in the seventh century) where the penance of human beings are compared to that of animals. I am sure that any art lover would wonder how the sculptor managed to create such an amazing art. The two giant elephants, meditating men, dogs and lions (Symbol of Pallava Kingdom) are some of the highlights. For long, Arjuna's penance has been the poster art for this heritage town. Arjuna's penance is simply the height of creativity.

This was carved in an era which was not even iron age - which means the whole thing was carved by rock itself. Stunning !

Fascinating wall carvings are among the highlights of any trip to Mamallapuram. They're free -- you can't ask for a better bargain than that!
