“Amazing rock carving skills shown in Pallava reign”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Mahabalipuram temples are typically carvings made of single rock / small hill. This makes it unique than the regular temples. You could notice how they start breaking the rocks (by making dotted lines / boxes and then run it with water & so on). Special attraction would be the Arjuna penance, Five rathas & the shore temple. At Arjuna penance, just try to imagine how they would have carved all those sculptures from top to bottom. I am sure, one would appreciate the efforts then.

Try spending time in the early morning itself (before noon), to beat the heat.

“Combine this attraction with the butter ball & 5 Rathas”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

You can easily incorporate these stunning rock carvings into a walk which takes only a couple of hours at a leisurely stroll from the 5 Rathas. The walk also takes in the butterball. You will get loads of rickshaw drivers wanting to ferry you between these points. Don't bother, they are very close and unless you find yourself under the midday sun there is no need for a rick. Tip- set off at breakfast time as it gets far too hot after 11am in April.

“Worth a look”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

If you're interested in thousand year old temples, this is a must. The shore temple has very unusual architecture, and is one of India's oldest temples. We went without a guide - which was perhaps a mistake as it would be good to have someone explain the significance of the different parts. The surrounding area is not very pleasant - full of people trying to (quite aggressively) sell things to tourists. I'd try and take an umbrella for the sun - as it can get very hot with little shade.
