We stayed for 2 nights on a very busy weekend and had booked a suite, but a simple (and cheaper) room would have been a better option, since rooms (at least some if not all?) also have AC and have a balcony to sit on. The suite was spacious and clean. Towels were white and clean (at least those of the room). Toilet paper OK. The breakfast buffet was nice. They can make dosa on order (if the cook is around... if not, they'll call for him). The staff was really nice. The reception can arrange for hiring a taxi (you'll probably find cheaper options around in Mahabalipuram, but to have a travel desk in the hotel is convenient and is worth paying slightly more for this).
They have "tips boxes" in which you can put your tips/backsheesh, but they'll also be very happy if you give them directly. In any case, the staff are friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant was average but correct and served quickly and with a smile. There are some strange birds around the property. It is nicely located. Go out of the property trough the exit at the back, and you'll easily and quickly get to the beach (less than 5 min walk).
What makes this hotel a good value it its amazing, big and very clean swimming pool. It is open from morning until 8 PM. Then the staff will start cleaning it and put chlorine on it. Thus it is always clean (and no mosquitoes around amazingly). There is a small round pool for children separated from the main swimming area with small pilars.
Just a confusing thing: the name of the hotel on their visit card is "Hotel Mahabs Inn"... it seems that "Hotel Mahabs" is the budget hotel and that the "Mahabs Inn" is another one? or the more expensive part of the property? I am not sure about that, but when we arrived, they had the reservation with my name, so I knew it was the right place. They even sent a re-confirmation e-mails a few days ahead.
The only thing I did not like is that there was noise all afternoon long (and they already had started in the morning) since they are renovating the area on top of the restaurant. It was not possible to take a nap. Quiet at night tough.
I would definitely recommend it. They accomodate a lot of French travelers (and families).

Stayed for one night. More of a Farm House environment than a hotel. However I liked it. Situated in the Centre of the town, yet very quiet with good amount of greenery around. kids loved the birds ( cocks, pigeons and ducks) in the entrance. pool is good. rooms are just average. one of our rooms had a broken door. There are open cupboardswith no doors in the rooms with newspaper spread on the bottom. Bathroom and toilet was one unit with not even a curtain seperation. Towels given were torn.

Restaurant prices were good and the spread quite nice.

Immediate actions needs to be taken on maintanence and upkeep otherwise the standard is bound to slide from average to below average.

However the extremely courteous and prompt staff compensated for all of the above.

In General stay was Ok. For the price paid an OK hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms are defnitely better than suites

We stayed in one of the cheaper rooms which has a balcony just outside the door. Our room was really clean with a nice aircon, the staff very friendly, and just like in the other reviews, we really enjoyed having the pool!!
Breakfast was nothing special, but served to us with a smile. Only the shower in our room could have had more water pressure, but hey, it did work and we were simply to lazy to ask for another room!

We stayed at the Hotel Mahabs for 2 weeks in April 2011. We had a deluxe double room which was very large and spacious, with air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a fridge, a wardrobe, drawers, a large mirror, a coffee table and chairs, and a large flat screen Sony Bravia television. The room was clean and comfortable. The service from all the hotel staff was extremely good - efficient, pleasant, polite, respectful and helpful. Many of the staff members were fluent in English and all were friendly. The room was cleaned everyday (plus the sheets and towells changed), if requested. Hot water was available 24 hours per day and outside the room was a balcony with seating over- looking the swimming pool. In the reception area internet access was available for 30 ruppees for half an hour (the same price as an hour in an internet cafe up the road), plus one could pay for internet access in one's room. In addition, we received a complimentary English language Chennai newspaper each day. The hotel is set back off the main road which meant that we could not hear the sound of traffic or people from the room. Thus, it was a quiet and peaceful place to stay. A buffet breakfast was included in the price (from 8am - 10am), comprising freshly squeezed water melon juice and tea, plus Indian (e.g. idlis, vadai, potato masala, sambar, pooris, dosa, coconut chutney) and European food (e.g. omelette, fried eggs, hard boiled eggs, toast with butter and jam). Preferring herbal teas, we took along our own tea bags. Breakfast could be eaten in the restaurant or outside alongside the swimming pool, either in the sun or the shade of the trees. The hotel includes a restaurant (and room service) with a menu of Indian, Chinese and European food. The swimming pool at Hotel Mahabs is wonderful and often my partner and I were the only people in the pool. We found the hotel was busier at the weekend compared to during the week. We made the booking by email including arranging for a car from the hotel to meet us at Chennai airport. In terms of location, it is excellent, just 2 minutes walk to the bus station where there are buses to Chennai, Kovalam, Pondicherry etc, auto rickshaws and cars with drivers available for hire. Arjuna's Penance is about 3 minutes walk away, as is Krishna's butter Ball. The Shore Temple and beach at Mahaballapuram are just 5 minutes walk, and Fisherman's Colony about 8-10 minutes walk. We would strongly recommend the Hotel Mahabs to anyone travelling to Mahaballapuram. Hotel Mahabs is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in in India and we would stay there again if ever in the area.

The pool is the best thing off this hotel.
We booked a suite .... which was a bit dissapointing. You had to climb some winding staircase to get to your suite, there was no balcony to sit (the cheap rooms have there own sitting space). Early morning you hear the engines of the swimmingpool from below your room. When I think of a suite I have another room in mind then the one we got.
The hotel staff didn't seem very interested.
I see a lot of good reviews and it is not bad but it's just not the kind of hotel we like.

Hotel Mahabs gets some mixed reviews, and that might be based on the type of room you stayed in. We stayed in a Suite room, which was up a spiral staircase above the pool. It had a bedroom with a queen room, dresser, TV, and closet, and a front room with chairs/table, TV and a single bed. It was very good value for a mid-range hotel room in India. We had no issues with mold and bad spells. We got a good night sleep and really enjoyed the super clean pool.

The service was excellent, they had a good driver pick us up at the hotel, and gave us good tips on things to do around town. The location was excellent, and was easy walking distance to all of the sites in town. The food in the restaurant was good for lunch and dinner. The breakfast buffet was decent, most Indian food, but there was always eggs and toast or a nice Indian bread.

We booked ahead via internet, everything was very efficient and timely.

Mahabalipram was one of our favorite places in Southern India and is highly recommended.

We had high hopes for this hotel, based on all the past reviews. We booked a standard air conditioned room here, as we did at all the hotels we used throughout Tamil Nadu and it was the first one we stayed at, so we had little idea what standard to expect. Having now returned, I can confidently say that Hotel Mahabs (as it is now known) had the worst room and represented the poorest value for money of the 6 we stayed at.

The hotel itself is okay. It has a lovely pool, there was a reasonable breakfast included and it is in a good position in the centre of Mahabalipuram, less than a minute's walk from the bus stand and within easy walking distance of the Shore Temple and other attractions. Mahabalipuram is a great place to stay and has many things of interest, good places to eat, good shopping and is well worth a visit.

But back to our room. Oh dear. It was on the ground floor, next to the one which seemed to be used by hotel staff members so there was quite a bit of noise from there, including a phone which rang throughout most of the night. The room really was quite grotty. There were gaps of an inch or more under the door and around the noisy air conditioning unit which had been loosely and badly fitted and allowed hundreds of mosquitoes to get in. It was impossible to get rid of so many and although I asked for a plug-in mosquito killer, the one we received had been re-filled with what I am sure was water. It bore no resemblance to any I've had before and the mosquitoes continued to thrive happily on our legs all night. The power point was hanging off the wall which made it difficult to use and also dangerous. We were unable to get any hot water from our shower, there was mould on the walls and the furniture was on its last legs. The room was in dire need of refurbishing completely.

To conclude, I would say that we were probably unlucky with our room. There might be others which are fine but ours wasn't. I have stayed in many cheap guesthouses throughout Asia which were 100 times better than this and far cheaper too. It was appallingly bad value and made for an unpleasant stay. If you stay here, ask to check your room carefully.
