Hotel Hill Retreat
Ranked #18 of 20 Hotels in Pelling

I spent two nights of my trip in middle Pelling at hotel Hill retreat. The room on offer was spacious, clean with a spectacular view of the Himalayas and the kanchanjunga range. On request, an additional room was provided immediately with minimum fuss. I was a little under the weather when i arrived but the staff treated me to warm lime water every half hour in the freezing temps till I recovered completely. I was traveling with my mum and mamaji who are a little strident about food but the cook made the simplest of meals delicious. the staff here is always attentive and polite and endeavors to meet every request made. The good part about the location is that it is slightly away from the more active upper pelling, where there are too many tourist vehicles commuting up and down the narrow road- yet it takes only a 5-8 mins walk to get right into the centre of the town. The hotel boasts of a small organic garden in the backyard where they grow their own vegetables for staff ( i requested them to feed me whatever they were eating), and just two shops down the hotel is the local milkman selling organic milk! The second evening, the manager Dev Bista even strummed his guitar on request to belt out a few songs under starlight! A magical and most memorable stay, inspite of my being ill, which is really saying something! kudos and thank you to the hotel team for making me feel right at home so far away from home!

Room Tip: Ask for view room; they have 4 of those out of 8- on a clear morning, you can enjoy the entire view...

We had a lovely stay at Hotel Hill Retreat, Pelling on 18th and 19th Dec 2012. It is a 8 roomed property. We had taken two Kanchenjunga facing room. Room is big with comfortable bed with plenty of warm blankets and quilts. There is no obstruction of view. Back of the hotel there is a small forest area on the mountain slope. The hotel has a small garden in front. In the room we were given a flask with hot water for drinking. The General Manager of the hotel Ms. Tara Chettri is a very reliable lady. The hotel is professionally managed. In fact she came down from Gangtok to check whether all facilities are working properly before we checked in at the hotel. We had gone in the lean season and we were the only occupants of the hotel. She had arranged transport for us from NJP to Kaluk, Kaluk to Pelling, Pelling to Temi Tea Estate and from Temi to NJP at a reasonable rate. We had a wonderful experience staying at Hotel Hill Retreat. Hotel staff "Swamy" is a young man with ever smiling face. He gave us excellent service. Service with a smile is something which a guest needs when he/she is away from home. Cook is not a professional cook. He prepared good local food. However, he needs training on preparing different types of dishes. With a little training he will surely improve. In fact, I had asked for chicken clear soup but he had prepared soup with soya sauce etc. When I gave him the recipe of chicken clear soup, he prepared it. We had taken veg and chicken thukpa for dinner. The thukpa was excellent. Food price is reasonable and quantity good.

I was little apprehensive staying at the property based on the review of some of the guests. However, all my fears were put to rest when I found the excellent service rendered by Hotel Hill Retreat. Yes, it is true that still they do not have intercom connected with the reception. However, whenever we rang the bell, Swamy promptly appeared to take care of our needs. The geyser's main switch is at the hotel reception, which they swich off at night. However early in the morning, they switch on the main switch, so we did not have any problem with hot water in the toilet.

The transport provided by Ms. Chettri was very well coordinated and always reported on time. Ram, the driver, walked with us to Rabdentse Ruins to show us the ruins. Vehicle does not go upto the ruins. One has to trek for about 15 - 20 minutes to reach the ruins. He provided excellent company to my mother in law when she trekked back to the vehicle from the ruins while myself, my spouse and daughter were busy clicking photos and showing our daughter different types of plants and trees in the forest.

Sight seeing was arranged by hotel. It was done at leisure.

Hats off to Ms. Tara Chettri and her team for managing the hotel so well.

Room Tip: Since the hotel was empty and we were the only occupants. We checked some of the rooms and found tha...

It was an overall OK 2 night stay in Hill Retreat, Pelling. The room allocated to us had no views other than the mountain slope at the side of the hotel. But we didn't mind that much as we anyways traveled and explored the place and didn't sit in our rooms all the time. The room itself was ok but not extraordinary. The location of the hotel is very good, as it is a little away from the cluster of central pelling but still only a short and pleasant walk from the shops and eateries. The food menu in the hotel is limited, but the food served was good and very reasonably priced. The two young boys serving us were ever helpful and smiling. There are some definite areas of improvement, like providing a telephone in the room to call reception/room service, thicker curtains in the windows to keep off the light if one wants to sleep in after sunrise (which is anyways a challenge with all the traffic on the road), better water heaters in the bathroom as the one in ours was extremely slow. We were also not impressed with the general cleanliness of the bathroom but it was passable.

The room was carpeted wall-to-wall. And warm water is provided for drinking. These two factors are a must, I realize, or else it is difficult to handle the cold temperatures.
Pelling is chosen as a tourist spot because it is closest to Kanchenjunga. And the view from the room is awesome!
The hotel is housed in a lovely building, the size, space and design is something that we in bigger cities would die for. But it looks like once it was built, people had no idea as to what to do with it. The service or the amenities do not match up.
First, they still have the archaic bell system to call the reception and not the telephone. And to top it, the bell wasn't working! So whenever you needed to call the help, you had to walk down two sets of stairs.
If you are ranked #2, one expects the best.
Getting hot water through all the taps in bathroom is compulsory in Pelling. Yet, the tap supplying hot water in the wash basin was broken. You had to go downstairs to let them know that you need hot water and only then the geyser switch is turned on at the reception. The bathroom had the basic amenities. Yet all the towels provided had some marks on them and were dirty. We could not use them and it is on this last leg of our journey that we had to take out our small towels that we carried as a stand-by.
The bed is also a bit small for two members. Big, comfortable pillows are provided though the mattress could have been better. The curtains instead of being thick were rather flimsy and we couldn't block out sunlight before we were ready to get up in the morning. And remember, sun-rise happens at around 5 am there. So you keep lying in your bed tossing and turning after 5, wishing to block out the rather too bright sunlight.
Breakfast on both mornings we were there happened to be the same: aloo paratha and bread toast.
Because the hotels in Sikkim cannot match in amenities with the bigger cities, all they can do to match is providing superior service. There was nothing in the service that I could say went beyond expectations.
Yet, they don't fail to put the Tripadvisor logo on the front door. To be ranked #2, you need to provide much better services and amenities. My rank would be a 2.5/5.

Our stay in this hotel was comfortable and relaxing to say the least , The hotel is located in Middle Pelling.
Pelling is just made up of many hotels and guest houses and some souvenir shops and eateries. As we entered Pelling , seeing all the hotels and guest houses , we were a little apprehensive about what Hill Retreat would have to offer . But we were pleasantly surprised when we saw that Hotel Hill Retreat is not exactly 'ON' the road , but a little away from it ( steps leading down to the hotel from the road ) This leaves space for a beautiful garden and one gets little or no noise of the traffic . There are only 8 rooms in the hotel - 3 on the ground floor and 5 on the first floor. All the rooms are spacious and carpeted. The rooms on the first floor - specially the ones facing the valley behind the hotel and for views of the Kanchenjunga (Room No 201 & 202 ) are absolutely fabulous. Being bird enthusiasts , we were lucky to spot many birds just from the balconies of these rooms . The valley behind also has some relatively easy paths to follow for leisurely walks with the kids.
Tara Chetri the hotel manager is extremely courteous and efficient and can arrange for all the trips for sightseeing around Pelling. The staff is very helpful and friendly . Meals can be arranged at the hotel itself in their restaurant . You can even ask Tara to arrange for a traditional meal and she will willingly oblige.

Room Tip: Room nos 201 and 202 with views of the Kanchenjunga

We made our booking of this hotel after reviewing tripadvisor where it is already no 1 rated hotel in pelling. After reaching pelling from NJP we were pleasantly greeted by Tara Chetri who is the hotel manager and had already kept two of the best rooms for us. You'll have to believe me when I say that the view from this room is worth the expense of your entire sikkim trip. If Warm water, well spacious fully carpeted rooms, great food, the most friendly staff you will ever see and a very efficient hotel manager who arranges local touring as well as transport to different places without an inch of frown on her face are not good enough for you, this is a must stay place for simply the view of the mighty Kanchenjunga. To make my experience even more worth remembering, when my wife left behind a few clothes, Tara Chetri offered to courier everything back to our home. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Book in advance, speak to Tara and ask her to get you the Kanchenjunga facing rooms.
