“Full Of Nature”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

This is one place I would like to visit time and again. We visited this place in the last week of December 2013, a good time for the visit. We were 17 of us and stayed at Saguna Baug for 2 days from which a day was spent at the Bungalow and another at Dormitories. Dorms are better as it is near the main reception.

The place is full of natural beauty full of flora fauna. Also there are plenty of lakes all over the place with loads of fishes.

Activities:
We indulged in Archery, Rifling, Fishing, Horse Riding, Kayaking, and Nature Trail.

How To Reach:
The best way is to ask Saguna for a free pick up from Neral station or go by private car.

Pro:
You can also carry your own tent for the stay.
Staff is extremely courteous and helpful.

Room Tip: Dorms are best.

I visited saguna baug with family on New year’s . We were a group of 6 (incl 2 kids). As we booked last minute, we were initially allocated dormitory. But on arrival we were issued a bungalow owing to last minute cancellation by someone. The place is very good for a day s picnic near Mumbai.
Close to nature. amazing flora fauna. River flowing around. Tasty simple food. & fun filled activities. snake show is good for kids. Swings & numerous hammocks to top it up. Horse riding is another feature here. Kids can also engage in archery & fishing is not to be missed for sure. Booking the premises is very simple –just over phone a day prior & both check in check out is very fast, simple & completely hassle free. Staff is extremely courteous & helpful. Rooms are decent but very simple & basic.

Room Tip: Tips : If you are used to staying overnight at plush locations – opt for a day’s picnic. & don...

Undoubtedly a place visiting time and again. A pleasant place to rejuvenate you. FOOD(veg) is excellent so is the staff. Was very amazed to see the cleanliness and eagerness of the staff to maintain it. Visiting there will for sure take close to the nature. The staff is very cordial no matter what. All the activities are well planned and considering all the age group.

One request to the staff/manager/organizer/owner. PLEASE STOP CRUELTY TOWARDS FISH. FOR GOD'S SAKE........THOSE ARE LIVING CREATURES AND NOT PLAY OBJECTS, DON'T PULL THEM OUT OF WATER JUST FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.....IMAGINE SAME THING BEING DONE TO ALL OF US ;(:(:(:( ......this is the only worst/saddening/disheartening PART OF THE ENTIRE TOUR

COMING AGAIN for a night stay.............

This is a real farm set up by a freedom fighter who was very passionate about Indian agriculture. Set on 16 hectares of land, this is a large property that is about 5km from Neral town. The road leading up to the property (especially the last 1km) is in bad condition, but once you get there you are pleasantly surprised by the place.

The place has lots of fun things to do, horse riding, fishing, swimming, walking tour. Our best was the bullock cart ride, where they teach you how to manage a bullock cart. It is quite an experience and something one doesn't get a chance to do in their daily lives. Our bullock cart went into the water to get a drink of water!

We noticed that there were some rooms and cottages to stay overnight. We only stayed there for a couple of hours, but would like to come back here some other time.

I'd give this place a 'zero' star, unfortunately there's no provision for that. Saying that our experience was terrible would be a gross understatement.

We were told that all cottages were full but "there's one which is slightly farther away from the other cottages". So we set off from Pune to Neral and got lost twice thanks to a total lack of sign boards. Eventually, we reached the place and realized that our stay was arranged in an old house, not a cottage but the manager said and I quote, "We call this also a cottage." No apologies, no courtesies for the misunderstanding, NOTHING.

Now, the best part of it all - the cottage - dirty, unkempt, no curtains, no electricity. I booked the room for four and got accommodation only for 3 so they arranged a 4th one at the last minute. They had fixed mosquito nets on top of the bed, the top of which looked like a graveyard of insects - I don't mean to say that you ought to clean it every second, but what's with the days-old worth of dead insects - how's one supposed to sleep under such filthy conditions? The sink had a soap case with soap that had been used by the previous occupant. After much argument and flaring tempers, we had no choice but to stay there and by then our trip was already down the drain.

The food, as expected was simple (which none of us had an issue with) but average and nothing to write home about. By 9:00 pm (and we'd reached at 7:oo pm), we decided to pay the bill (we decided to pay only 50% of it because that's what was deserved and we refused to be taken for a ride) and leave at the crack of dawn.

The most important part of any stay is the place you stay in - once in a while you can compromise on the food but if you're made to stay in a "cottage" that's not even fit for animals you can't possibly come back or recommend the place to anyone. We even spoke to the owner and he said "Everyone who stays here is middle-class and this is the kind of accommodation we arrange". I am sorry to say that I saw no one there who is "middle class".

If you're in the service industry and you've got a business like this, you need to make sure your customer is satisfied, at least. Clearly, the owner is out to make a quick buck and cheat people. The place is gorgeous and very close to nature but I will strongly advise just making it a day trip, please don't stay here - the management (except for 2 polite boys) (and excuse the language) sucks to no end. As does the owner.

It’s a place one cannot resist falling in love with… This place was recommended by many of my wife’s friends and we had been meaning to get there for some time now.
It was our anniversary but neither did we have the urge to splurge nor the time for a long vacation. So my wife called them and booked the place about 2 weeks in advance; which also was extremely late. The place was completely full like we had heard, barring this one cottage which was slightly modest as compared to the others and a little distant from the main dining area. There are no booking charges, so you pay only once your stay is over. I was a bit surprised with that, wondering how often they must be losing out due to cancellations considering we Indians love tentative bookings. Anyway, we booked for the 36 hours package, which is a brilliant concept. As one can utilise the Friday night, not waste the entire day on Sunday and make the most of Saturday.

So we were off on Friday evening at around 630 pm with the intention of getting there by 830 pm as promised to them. We were delayed in the city itself for about half hour due to 2 necessary stops for water and fuel. Fortunately with lesser traffic than usual at that time of the day we were out of the city pretty soon. Cruising on the expressway we missed the left exit for Sherdung and then began what seemed like “the never to end journey”. Without any u-turns or exits we had to drive till the exit to Khopoli and take a u-turn inside the national highway to Khalapur. The roads were dark and villages not so many, maps down, they would not pick up the landline we were calling at and they could not reach us on the mobile due to bad network, suddenly we felt all alone (Our bad that we didn’t take any alternate number for Saguna Baug to call if required). We then decided to ask people regardless of the maps. We got directions from an old Marathi manus and double checked it with one or 2 others. No more mistakes right up to Saguna Baug. However the road after the Chowk near Karjat was under repair and that made the drive bumpy and very time consuming. But the maps helped a lot.

We finally made it to the place by 1030 at night, apprehensive of whether they’ve kept us dinner (because kitchen was to close by 9 latest) and if our room was ready for us to crash. But reaching there was the end of our problems. We were pleasantly surprised that almost the whole staff had waited back just for the 2 of us. They with a lot of empathy asked us to leave our bags in the car and first freshen up near the dining area and sit to dinner. They serve only vegetarian in the buffet but we had ordered an extra ¼ kg chicken dish, the food was amazing and the price completely reasonable. This was the case for the next 36 hours. We were taken to our room which was very modest yet clean with a very homely look.

Next day after breakfast we were shown around the farm, told about agriculture, what they grow, the different plants and trees they had sown, the fishes in the pond, a nice swim and buffalo ride in the river, buffalo milking, fishing and boating. All these activities are part of the package. One can also do other activities like archery, shooting, horse riding; etc which can be availed at a reasonable price. We also got to see a snake show in the afternoon; however this is not a regular activity.

We were lucky to have met and spoken to the owners and managers. The place is owned by a lovely family (Shekhar uncle, Anuradha aunty, Chandan) who have inculcated their hospitality in the people who work for them. The place is managed exactly how it should be, with simplicity, moderation (no greed), respect, passion, innovation; I can go on and on. Thank you for all the hospitality, Shekhar uncle, Anuradha aunty, Chandan, Sandhya aunty, Ketaki, Avani and Dr Dave. Special thanks to Avani for having personally taken us for an early morning walk to get a view of the beautiful birds (luckily we spotted black storks alongside the white ones, green pigeons and many more). Special thanks to Dr. Dave for showing us her horses (this was a Special so don’t expect this in your package).

There are so many reasons to go back there but the most important of all are the people who work at Saguna Baug. They are humble and giving but without expectations which is so rare to find these days. I am sure all of them deserve a mention but here are the names of a few people we interacted with, Gajanand and Nitesh (who received us at night), Bhanuprasad (who catered to our calls for hot water and tea in minutes; also escorted us to our cottage the first night), Prashant (who made sightseeing not only informative but very pleasant) and Jitendra (who patiently waited with us while we were fishing even post sunset).

A few negatives for a certain set of people might be, there is no TV in any of the rooms and alcohol is prohibited to maintain the serenity of the place. One suggestion is that Saguna Baug should also look at longer stay packages because there are so many visitors who may be interested to stay for a month or so.

We wish Chandan all the very best and request him to keep the sanctity of the place intact. Keep it up!
