“A quiet resort in the wilderness”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Mahau Bagh is a very quiet farmhouse, off the main road connecting kashid with murud. A top a quiet hill with lot of mango trees. The rooms of the resort are quiet spacious. Unlike a conventional resort, this farmhouse has lot of trees and greenery. Just 5-7 min walk from the resort, one can get down to the rocky beach with just quietness and wilderness.

I chanced upon this place while browsing for a weekend getaway. I visited Mahua Bagh in the month of May 2013, when summer is at its peak, and thinking of a beach getaway at that point of time is practically uncalled for. Yes, Mahua Bagh is located along a beach, they have their own private access to a beach. This place is full of mango trees, infact the welcome drink was a mango panna, which was so refreshing.... I asked for another serving!!! The food was different, cooked the north Indian style, so if you expect the local cuisine, you might have to specifically ask for it; I did not. Incidentally there were no other guests, and we had all the place for ourselves. There was a lot of mango in the food, be it pulp, be it juice, we truly enjoyed being the 'Mango People' that time. The rooms are spacious enough, please remember you are in the midst of a large plantation and you'd find pests and cattle around. Don't be afraid, they mind their own business. There is a problem with the power supply though; they have to keep switching to the generator on and off; and it gets quite unpleasant and humid in the summers. Mornings and evenings were pleasant; before I forget they have a set of adorable dogs whom you are sure to miss for a day or two.....

Room Tip: The higher rooms have a good view of the sea.

We chanced upon Mahua Bagh on tripadvisor, while searching for a quiet place to spend this new year’s eve at - away from partying hordes and reasonably close to drive to, from Mumbai. The hotel website made the property look inviting and we got a prompt reply to our online query. A little back and forth with the contact person got us a confirmed package (all meals inclusive) for 3 nights. We specifically asked for a ‘new’ room, based on tripadvisor reviews. It took us about 4 hours to drive down from Mumbai. We had been forewarned by Mahua Bagh and other tripadvisor reviewers about the ‘kachcha’ dirt track to approach Mahua Bagh, once we steered off the state highway after Mazgaon village. A rough, 1 kilometre-long-ride later, we were fetched by Sudeep – one of the smiling, eager to help staffers. The entrance is on a slope and is easy to miss. We noticed a lot of other guests needed help with locating the place, so a signpost along the dirt track will definitely help! Mahua Bagh has 6 cottages in a cascade on a small hillock and a large connected complex of 5 cottages on the ground level at the entrance to the property. We were shown 2 options of rooms to choose from the set of ground level cottages and we opted for room number 3, which had basic, vintage wooden furniture, a very noisy little fridge and no wardrobe. The bed-cover and curtains were a little grubby, but the rest of the bed linen, towels and blankets were fresh and spotlessly clean. A door at the end of the room opened into a delightful little open courtyard, through which we could access the airy bathroom which had lots of natural light. There was a sunken bath, moderately heated water from the solar heater, basic toiletries (1 sachet of shampoo and 1 small Lifebuoy soap). The toilet seat could do with fixing. On our second day there, we moved to room number 5, which had a nicer layout, was airier, brighter, had better furniture, a private sit-out and a charming open air rain shower, as well as a better bathroom. The simple, delicious meals here are served alfresco under the breezy shade of Alphonso mango trees and cooked home style. Lunch is a completely vegetarian affair and there is a chicken curry for dinner (on request). We were very disappointed that there was no sea food on offer, despite the property’s proximity to a fishing village and the coast. There are different dessert options in every meal like kheer, custard, rasgullas, gulab jamuns. The alu parathas at breakfast deserve a special mention – they are simply terrific. Eggs on request are also done well and tea time is great, with a robust ‘adrak’ chai and crisp potato-onion pakodas. We noticed a lot of recently planted coconut palms and some old mango trees, but didn’t come across any vegetable patches or fruit trees, though the website and staff claim the meals are cooked from fresh produce off the land. While Mahua Bagh is close to the coast, the beach nearby is rocky and you would need to drive up to Murud (20 minutes by car) for a rustic beach experience. The fishing boats across the creek from Mahua Bagh make interesting subjects for photography and in the stillness of the night, one can hear engines of fishing boats juddering out to sea to set out their nets. There is no TV and both the internet and mobile connectivity are dodgy. This works splendidly well if you are looking for a truly disconnected break and we did a lot of reading in the beautiful open verandahs or slung in the hammocks, since there isn’t much else to do. The electricity situation was well under control and we managed to keep our phones and tabs charged. The staff, particularly Michael, Sudeep and the manager Sheval Jain take special care to cater to all requests and the three super friendly dogs Gypsy, Jimmy and Jack kept us company.
If you are looking for a property that is literally away from the madding crowd, this is it! We've rated this as 'very good' for the absolute tranquility and home style comfort, which this place offered.

Room Tip: Room number 3, 4 or 5 are among the newer rooms on the ground level and are better maintained.

Mahua Bagh is a very interesting property it belongs to a very famous Bollywood Actor how use to live in this property but and has now decided to rent out it out as holiday rental. There are 4 very big private villas with have fantastic views...over the rolling hills with lots of mango trees. We actually decided to stay in the new cottage block built 3 yrs ago (there is a conference area, along with a total of 4/5 seperate cottages) We enjoyed relaxing on the balcony outside our cottage... the kids enjoyed playing on the swinging chair so did i! We also made friends with the two dogs that sleep in the shade of the balcony. My favourite part about Mahua Bagh was it was full of surprises we had lovely Diwali fireworks the kids even had a go at lighting the fireworks which were they thorughly enjoyed!!!! I think what made Mahua Bagh a great location was down to the staff in particular the Manager/Chef/staff we thought you were exceptional.... nothing was too much trouble very helpful indeed. The Manager would ask us everyday if we would like any prefered food for our evening meal ie fresh pomfret...everytime we returned from a trip one of the staff would ask if we would like any fresh snacks cooked and brought over to the balcony along with drinks for the kids. The manager and staff we also so helpful in directing us to the right place to go on our trips,,, and too beaches. I think without the fantastic staff there wouldnt be such a great atmosphere at Mahua Bagh and the staff seemed happy in their work!. I particually liked the outside dinning area alongside a very nice hammock placed amongst the shady trees my only concern is that i have three kids and there was only one hammock,,,, it was quite amusing to see three kids squashed in the hammock like peas in a pod!!! we are looking forward to returning again for the next Diwali break and thanks the staff for making this the most memorable enjoyable trip one we wont forget :) thanks everyone

If you have GPS reaching the place is easy, however it's only the case with Mapmyindia. Google maps will leave you stranded. Entry to the resort is a difficult drive but once there it's a beauty in itself. Lush green lawns spread with interspersed palm gives a warm welcome. The two dogs especially the great dane offer you another angle to happiness... The food is so home made and fresh and tasty and so congenially served. We reached pretty late as were delayed during the travel, but the gesture of the manager to call us up and confirm our lunch was quite warm...not to mention that had our lunch around 3:30pm. The morning walk through the forest with someone guiding us (the great dane) gave us such a comfort. The beach was so close which gave us easy access at our times..but was always guided with the limited people around.. Rooms were excellent and hats off to the service provided...homely and very happy..but sad as we missed the cottages right by the forest due to the monsoons...will visit many more times...

Mahua bagh is a tucked away property ... A little hard to find as they don't really have too many sign boards. The road leading to the property was actually no road indeed. Once we crossed the stone road and entered the property it was just breathtaking... A beautiful location covered with millions of mango trees and 4 rooms right at the entrance. They also have some other rooms a little further away, but due to the rains they were not functional.

We stayed in one of the rooms right close to the entrance. The room was a pretty room though not very well maintained (moist walls). The washroom clean and big, with an open shower... Loved the way the rooms are constructed. You can see a million fireflies in the night which is good sight...

Service: Brilliant!! The warmth of the staff and always eager to help attitude was amazing.. The service is very personal and every guest is treated well.

Food: Home cooked, fresh and simply yummy ... The food is freshly cooked and served with warm chappatis at the time you want ...

The property needs to be a bit well maintained structure wise, overall a good property to do just nothing....

If you're tired of the busy city life and need a peaceful getaway then this is the place for you. The location is remote and the road to get there is bumpy and horrible but the place is worth the trouble. The rooms are huge, clean and beatiful. The ocean view from the room is incredible. The staff is friendly and accomodates most of your requests. If you like sipping some beer/wine while chilling there then you may want to carry some with you as you may not get it there. The rooms on the left have a better ocean view than the ones on the right. I would definately go back to mahua baug.
