“Keilder Cabins”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

We first stayed here more than 20 years ago, then, if you weren’t there before 5.00pm, the key for your cabin was left in the door! The nights were very dark and the night sky was great and there was no on site facilities after 5.00pm, which we liked!

It's still very good, if not a lot more commercialised, which is I supposed what you would expect. My wife and I had a great weekend, the staff attended to the few minor issues with the cabin promptly and were very pleasant.

If I was to compare the previous visits to now, then I would say that there is far too much lighting around the site, (health and safety now doubt), but it does spoil what would otherwise be a wonderful night time experience, and! I do miss the total isolation that was the case in the past, but you can still use your torch in the woods!!!

The onsite pub is ok, but too expensive (£1.50 for a packet of crisps!!) the food is reasonable, but again limited and quite expensive for what is on offer, but the staff are really pleasant and welcoming, and the environment is really good! So, take your own crisps 

“Beautiful location, shame about facilities/cleanliness etc”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

Just back from a week's stay in one of the Tynedale classic lodges. A fantastic location on the edge of Kielder water. Weather was great - although the midges were biting - so make sure you take lots of anti-midge stuff. Kids adored the playgrounds which were free. That's the good side.

Downside - the cleanliness of the lodges leaves a lot to be desired. Brown stain marks on walls - which I hope were squashed midges! Bathrooms that really did not look as if they had seen much cleaning. A dishwasher (sounds good initially) that does not wash and is not maintained. A dining table that was as clean as the bar in my student union days. A fridge that still had food wrappings in from the previous guests. A very poorly stocked and pricey shop - they could do a lot better. A restaurant which is hit and miss depending on whether the head chef and manager are in - when they are - a great experience, when not - don't ask.

A number of these items were raised on day 2 when the fridge door broke sending milk and red wine onto the kitchen floor. The manager of the site then inspected and said not up to their usual standards. Cleaners came and cleaned bathroom - but the kitchen floor was not washed, fridge was not cleaned.

Having to pre-book the pool and only being allowed an hour slot does provide limitations as mentioned by others. Pool depth at 1.3 means that only those children who are confident swimmers are really any good. It meant we only visited it twice. Price of other activities when paying for 4 children was pretty expensive but the staff who ran the Go Active activities were really nice and encouraged the kids well.

We will not be going back and are raising a formal complaint with Hoseseasons - so be warned. Its such a shame as the location is fantastic and the scenery amazing.

“Caravan park excellent -staff "could do better"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

Site with beautiful views over Keilder reservoir. A bit pricey at £28.00 per night even with caravan club discount, but you are paying for the beautiful location. Bike trails excellent. Nearby shop a touch limited but very friendly service. See separate review on restaurant on Tripadvisor. Very good site with excellent toilet block. All of which makes the below disappointing.
The warden was hardly pressed for time in a quiet period but could not meet our simple request to move pitches. We wanted to move to move to a pitch overlooking the reservoir which had been vacated by a departing van. He told my wife "you don't know how difficult this is." This seemed ridiculous and on being pressed he said it was down to fire regulations. On "the system" it would show 2 people on our pitch and so what would happen if a party of 6 booked into our vacated pitch?! Are you keeping up? There might be a grain of truth in what he said but how difficult is it to change details on a booking system? 5 minutes max? If it is so difficult to change then there is something wrong with the system. We really felt he just could not be bothered. "Could do better"?.
Basically the wardens on these sites are pretty autonomous and the lack of competition in these remote areas leaves Hobson's choice. I suspect the monitoring of staff performance is pretty light touch. This makes it pretty easy for the staff to be complacent. Will probably try the site aa Keilder village next time.

“Peace and tranquility”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

Stayed for 7 nights with husband and 2 kids. Beautiful location. Stayed in Otterstone executive lodge which was spacious and well equipped. Pool was small and it was a bit disappointing that you had to book a slot rather than go as you pleased, but kids still loved it. We ate in The Boathouse on several occasions and service and food were lovely. Plenty to do, however many if the activities, such as the water walkers incurred charges, but the stunning scenery, walks and lots of wildlife meant we didn't really bother. Kielder is very remote and we were very lucky that the weather was good as I think it would be very hard to amuse 2 under 7s in the rain. Overall we had a great time. Accommodation and staff were great.

“Very |Good lodges”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

Good accommodation but the midgies and mozzies had no problems so if you are going in the 8 weeks when they are in their hordes take plenty of protection, I did but it didn't work so im sat with my arms covered in calomine lotion.

the lodges themselves are very good and have just about everything most people need.
