“Not enough activities”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

We thought this would be an ideal holiday for 2 active boys aged 11 and 12 but were very disappointed. Although the bike paths were good the surrounding roads were too busy to cycle comfortably on. Our kids enjoy road cycling so options were very limited, may be more available for mountain bikes although the mountain bike skill courses advertised in the brochure were cancelled during the 2 weeks we were there (August). The Water Ski School was excellent and our boys enjoyed developing this skill but apart from taster sessions in kayaking there were no other water based activities on offer. One of my son's said - "All this water and nothing to do on it". The swimming pool was small and only opened from 9am to 6pm and you were only able to get in if you had booked a slot in advance - not conducive for a spontaneous holiday. The holiday would have been so much better if swimming had been allowed on the lake or if kayaks or wind surfers had been available for hire. Accommodation was fine - basic, we stayed in the Hadrian, but clean and comfortable. May be an ideal quiet retreat for younger families or couples but in our experience not suited to active older kids.

The first impression is with my nose, open the door and smell, time and time again to go somewhere and the smell of damp or the previous occupants fried breakfast but this smelt fresh and clean.
We stayed in No1 which we paid a little more for but this was a break without kids and without the thought of work so the extra was justified, it had everything you could want cooker, fridge freezer and even a dishwasher. There were only 4 tv channels and no mobile phone service so piece and quiet is total, there's a pay phone in the lodge but when your on holiday who do you want to call.
The staff on site are friendly and helpful and any problems are instantly fixed. My wife says that its the best bed she'd ever slept on. The view of the water on a morning while having breakfast is fantastic the only negative is that there are quit a lot of midge's and when I say a lot there's lots and lots this is only because of the time of year but plenty of repellant usually does the trick.

Not the first visit and hopefully not the last. As usual a high standard of accomodation, log cabin 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms all you could possibly want in the kitchen, from dishwasher (not me for a change) to microwave, toaster etc. But you really cant get better than whats on your door step, beautiful views, quiet walks along side the reservoir and several places to keep the kids entertained, Then to sit down relax with a glass of wine and hear nothing but the owls (from the bird of prey centre on site) hooting into the night! not that they disturb you, just remind you of how quiet it really is. Plus if you are a star gazer no better place to see the thousands of stars that appear in the clear night sky, really is wonderful.

Room Tip: All the cabins are fantatstic, views from all.

We stayed 3 nights over Easter April 2012. I am writing this the evening we returned home, first time contributor compelled by the excellence of the accommodation. We stayed in a tynedale classic that slept 6 and we had plenty of room. The quality of the fixtures and fittings was superb, they have not gone for the cheapest option when fitting out these cabins that's for certain. The food on the leaplish site was very good and not overpriced, the views excellent. Take bird seed with you we all ( including the kids) loved feeding the little birds and even enjoyed one eating out of our hands. Kielder as a whole is great fun, we didn't bike, we walked but for the more adventurous bike hire was available. The only issue we had was the freely available trails guides were not accurate, a little difficult to follow and gave no indication of how long it would take to reach features along the route. The artwork is interesting, but little or no leaflets were to be found explaining them or how long it might take to reach them. For example, DO NOT go to the wave chamber unless it is a very sunny day, the concept as we discovered is lost when cloudy. We had a great time and would certainly stay at the lodges again. The observatory is well worth the bad road up to it and the tea shop at the castle is excellent and even allows dogs , don't expect too much from the castle itself. To finish if you are lucky enough to be staying in one of the tynedale lodges, take tongs and some form of baking tray, they were the only things missing from the well equipped kitchen and we managed, but turning bacon is much easier with tongs!

Room Tip: Cabin 20 was quite private 30 looked like it had excellent views

We stayed at Kielder from the 17- 20th March 2012 and had a fantastic time. My Husband has been having health problems and we were told by the Doctor he needed to relax and that's exactly what he did.
We stayed in a Redesdale Comfort Lodge which turned out to be larger than we first thought. It was very comfortable, had modern features with every appliance needed for a fortnight nevermind 3 days! It was also really clean and we were welcomed by fresh flowers on arrival.
Leaplish itself was in a lovely location. Easy to find, well signposted and with great close amenities for children. Our 4 year old loved having 3 separate playgrounds so close by. There was also the indoor pool!
We never went in the pub or restaurant so really couldn't comment on them. We couldn't fault the staff. We did however go on some great walks & trips in car over to Carlise and up to Hawick in Scotland. We will def be back next year probably around the same time.
Points to note though are that although other people are saying that they couldn't get mobile phone reception, we managed to get one bar sometimes two from the lodge if we faced southwards. Also make sure you have enough petrol as it's a long way from a petrol station especially on a Sunday!

Room Tip: We stayed in a lodge that is usually the second cheapest and it was extremely good quality. We were...

The cabins were fantastic, we had an otterstone executive and it was fab. The area around was fantastic and the kids prefered it to centre parcs. The Boat house pub was quite expensive but we really enjoyed it and are looking to go back again and would love to do New Year here. The children loved going everywhere on bikes and we hired a tandem from purple bikes at the tower and it was fab. The pool was ok although a little crowded at times. We had a problem with our car when the window fell through into the door and the staff went above and beyond to try and help. However be warned, we had cover with a well known road side recovery but they refused to come out due to the remote area and the only company that would was the AA so we had to join them and even though it cost a fortune they to were also great. Would def go back.

We've just stayed over New Year and had a great time.

The lodges were spotless, ours looked out over the beautiful Kielder Water.

As it was Christmas, each lodge had a Christmas wreath on the door, a lovely tree and even a hamper.

The staff at Leaplish were exceptionally friendly. The pool is terrific. We'll be coming back in the Summer (also to see the Birds of Prey Centre).
