“Good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

I chose this hotel after reading Tripadvisor reviews and I concur with the consensus; it's a good, comfortable family hotel with a host who goes out of his way to ensure the guest is well-fed and has a good night's sleep. The dinner in particular was unexpectedly good, the quality worthy of a noted city establishment, and the breakfast was substantial. Secure storage was found for our bicycles in the cellar. A good value hotel.

Two nights b and b 18th/19th August. Booked as cost seemed about right and the good reviews on this site. Comfortable Room (#4) plenty of space extra bed for families - bathroom just okay but good shower etc plenty hot water and easy to control. Family run and all staff all very pleasant. Breakfast very good and evening meals in their own restaurant excellent especially their Sunday to Thurs offer of a main course and a drink for a tenner. So had the fish and chips two nights running. By the way the restaurant photo on their website doesn't do them any favours so ignor. No hotel parking but car park on opposite side of road. Didn't try any other places in this small town to eat or drink but left happy that we had booked the right place. Thank you Douglas Hotel

We were warmly welcomed, had an excellent dinner and a very very comfortable night. This was followed by a first class breakfast with loads of fresh fruit, yoghourt and also butter and jams which were not packaged!!! Altogether a first class establishment with a delightful owner.

Room Tip: A room at the back of the hotel might be preferable

I booked the Douglas on the strength of the Deuchars on tap and the crackling! We and our three (well-behaved) young children stayed for three nights. The room was clean and bright, the beds comfortable and our room was adapted to fit the kids in with us with no fuss. We ate in the restaurant each night and had a cooked breakfast each morning. The meals were first class - an interesting menu, reasonably priced; straightforward food but cooked very well indeed and with quality ingredients. Very generous portions though! Breakfast also excellent. The landlord was welcoming, the bar was lively and well frequented. The only tiny criticism would be that the cheese board was a bit dull - I had been expecting some local specialities but got standard fayre. However the staff all worked extremely hard, we had a fantastic three nights and will definitely be back.

This was our first stay at this small hotel, although we had used the restaurant on a previous occasion. A friendly welcome from the owner on arrival - offered us fresh milk as an alternative to the little pots of UHT. The clean, comfortable and well-furnished room hadn't the best view out of the window, but then perhaps we had been spoiled by the previous (much more expensive) hotel in the Lake District over the previous few days.
A peaceful night's sleep followed by an excellent breakfast set us up for the following day.
The large portion size in the restaurant meant that we couldn't possible finish it, which was a pity as it was very tasty. Perhaps we shouldn't have had a starter!
Overall definitely one to bookmark for the future.

Didn't stay here, stayed in a local bed and breakfast but ate here every night. The food is lovely and well worth the money the portions are huge. Defo worth a visit if looking for somewhere to eat.
