The village is becoming a construction site, unfortunately. And there doesn't seem to be any building plan. I don't know how the mountain can sustain it all. Nevertheless, until another town comes to the fore, it is a good place to base yourself for a day or two in the area. There are some nice handicrafts, but the food is a bit disappointing. Just focus on the scenery which is spectacular. Be sure to walk some of the trails through the terraces. Tour groups do come through here for the day, but they mostly stay on the main walking thoroughfare.

Positive: Nice village up hill. Quite hard to climb all the stairs to get to our hostel. Really nice view points.

Negative: The are building hostels everywhere. Too much constructions will impact the environment and the views.

We hiked here from Tiantouzhai and were slightly underwhelmed. Although the access is far easier the views are not as nice, and the village has gotten quite touristy so there are tourists everywhere. The short hike up to the viewpoint overlooking the village is well worth it though.

Fantastic hike between the two scenic spots in Ping'an. Best to go close to sunrise or sunset where the water in the rice terraces shimmer beautifully to the light.

Although the drive up the mountain is quite harrowing we really enjoyed this place. We took the time to hike to nearby Dazhai Village (about 8-10 KM) which took about 3 1/2 hours. Hired a local to carry our packs and this trip was high on my list of adventures and I been to many places.
