5 Stars not as in "5 star hotel", but as in perfectly appropriate for the location and the price. It is wooden, rustic and built like the other typical houses in that area. For German speakers familiar with the Alps, it is kind of like a nice "Huette" (that's what my kids compared it to). Most of what the other reviews say is true: Amazing views from the rooms and terrace; friendly, English speaking hosts (Hannah and Jimmy); thin wooden walls - yes, you will hear your neighbors snore or talk, but that comes with the construction and local style; simple, but functional and private bathrooms; hike-in required - again, that's part of the charm, but you have to be up for it; and working wifi. The rooms and views are just like in the official photos. We did like the food, especially the dishes made with fresh local vegetables like bamboo shoots. We loved the fried noodles with egg for breakfast - so yummy!
I loved the night - it cooled down a lot, and we slept with the window open - the screen kept out bugs (the gaps in the building probably didn't, though). The different kinds of frogs made for nice background noise?music?, which actually was welcome to camouflage your neighbors' noise, if there was any.
To clear up any confusion: This inn is now run by Hannah, who had previously managed the Jin Tian Inn and got rave reviews there (her lease there was up and they are constructing a new inn partially in front of it now).
We also found the local people very friendly and not pushy at all.
If you think about visiting the rice terraces, do it sooner rather than later. It is becoming more touristy and commercialized, but in the back part of the rice terraces (Dazhai, Tian Tou Village), it was still very enjoyable. You can tell it is changing, though, and they are putting in a Gondola to go up to one of the view points from Dazhai. That will likely bring a lot more people, though many might just stick to taking the Gondola and lots of pictures.
