“Great Holiday in China!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

The Wisdom Inn is a wonderful find in a fantastic traditional village in Longsheng County. The bus ride from the airport is a harrowing one, but if you can make it, it is worth it to be in this idyllic setting. Sandy and her husband are gracious hosts! The village of Dazhai and neighboring area will soon look much different as the government has decided to make money on tourism. See this while you still can. The town people are friendly and seem to have bought in the the fact that visitors will be interrupting their traditional life a bit.
The walk from Dazhai to Ping'An is great, and getting back to the Wisdom Inn for a cold beer was just what we needed. Thanks, Sandy!

We recently spent one night here. Sandy is a lovely host. She's very environmentally conscious. Room was clean with great views of the village and terraces. A very generous breakfast was included in the rate.
Make sure when you book that you choose the right Wisdom Inn! Sandy has been operating her business since 2009 and has built up a good reputation. Another inn across the way wasn't doing so well, so they recently changed their name to Wisdom Inn to try and profit from the reputation Sandy has built. The Chinese government permits businesses to copy other business names as long as they're in foreign language, however, Chinese business names can't be copied.
Sandy's Wisdom Inn is near the entrance of the village - second building on the left.

We really liked this place. It must be the cleanest hostel in Dhazai. Sandy, the owner, was very friendly and had an answer to any question we asked. The room was big enough and the badroom comfortable. The view from our room was amazing. If you wanna get zen in China, this is the place to stay!

Sandy pointed us towards great hiking and good food, as well as arranging transport from Guilin and to Yangshuo. Clean and pleasant, with a tasty breakfast. All around a great stay!

Room Tip: At least one family room that sleeps 3 is available

Most people seem to be going higher up for the so called fabulous views. The views are spectacular where ever you are. It is actually much quieter down below and you can watch the world go by!! Sandy is great. Everything is spotless. She knows the area and she told us about all the walks we could do. We walked for hours even in the rain. I would have loved to stay much longer as it is such good hiking country but the rain did get to us after 5 days. The people are wonderful with lots of humour. We had some great local food in the village. Wouldn't want to stay anywhere else!

We booked in originally for 2 nights at this Inn which was recommended to us by Faye of Secret Garden in Yangshuo.Originally we were shown a room with a king size bed overlooking the back terraces but when we asked for a room with 2 beds were given a large room with a single and a double bed overlooking the village and the Rice terraces which was clean and comfortable. Unfortunately for us it was pouring with rain and we only ventured out onto the spectacular terraces on our arrival. The following day the rain was relentless. we cut short our stay.
Sandy was working single handed doing everything including the cooking which was was really good. She was run off her feet catering to the needs of 2 families with 7 young children between them as well as other guests so while we had to wait our turn for a meal it was worth it.
On the afternoon that we arrived the power was out and there was not a coffee to be had in the village for quite a while. Wisdom Inn only has a reception room which includes the dining area so in wet weather when the needs of young and old are to be catered to the only other option is to curl up on your bed with a book.

We stayed there for one night to explore Dazhai. Dazhai is still very untouched and underdeveloped as a tourist location which could be both good or bad in some ways. Staying at Wisdom Inn and with Sandy you get all the comforts you would expect in a good modern accommodation and easily explore the location. I am not from China and dont know the language so having an English speaking hostess was a big plus. The rooms and whole place is immaculately clean and Sandy the owner manages everything and takes care of everything end to end. If you are scared to venture out in terms of food you could order food in the inn as Sandy cooks a variety of dishes and makes everything fresh from the scratch including the bread. We loved to have hot chocolate before turning in. The whole place is made out of wood so be prepared for a few creeks and noises but nothing unbearable and its normal in accommodation here. The hostess has taken care of every little detail for a western visitor from the multiplugs to great shower, hot water, study lamp. We got a room with good view which was nice in the evening and mornings specially when it was raining. The place can get a bit cold but owner provides a heater in case required. The views are of looking terraces up as the inn isnt situated post you climb up - its right after walking a bit from the bus stop or car parking. You could take your luggage easily as there is no climbing.

Dazhai is very much a blast from the past, its pretty much lights out after dark, trails to explore in the morning landscape is similar so you could do as many or as few as you want.

Another great thing about the owner was that she arranged our transportation and considering the terrain it was very essential to have a good driver as it was not just windy but it was misty and raining. We hit a few bad rainy days but it was still beautiful. We paid for Yanghuo to Dazhai 580 yuan, Dazhai to Pingan 100 yuan and 350 yuan from Pingan to Guilin if this helps - I am not sure if this is high or low but it was what was being quoted outside as well and the driver was great. It was a minivan so you could share with 4 or 5 people if you are traveling together. You need to pay 80yuan each over and above this for entry.Time taken for Yangshuo to Dazhai was 5 hours for us which is about 1.5 hr more than usual as a key road was blocked. 40 mins from Dazhai to Pinan. Miraculous 2.5 hrs from Pingan to Guilin airport despite the rain and fog.

I would say Dazhai was good (for a night) but the inn and our driver was excellent and perfect for our stay.

Room Tip: Room with the view is nice - its the view in front of the hotel
