“Wonderful friendly country pub, with a wicked personality!”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

We visited The Barley Mow with our parents, after a lovely afternoon in Matlock Bath. I had scoured trip advisor for suitable places to eat and the excellent reviews had drawn me towards The Barley Mow - I am so glad that they did!
When we arrived, we found a cosy corner and ordered some local ales to sample. The barman was really helpful and explained the options on the menu, which for a small local pub, we considered to be quite extensive. The food was reasonably priced and really very tasty, it was not the fastest food (being home cooked and fresh is much more important) and we were not in a rush to leave, so more than happily waited the 30 mins or so for our order to be brought to the table. All 5 of us cleared the plate and agreed that it was the best meal of the week, it was just a shame it was our last night in Derbyshire!
The landlady came and sat down with us for a chat and we got to meet her lovely little daughter, who was excited about trying some of the kitchens freshly made Rhubarb Crumble! Eddie, the landlady’s dad was lovely and chatted to the dads in our group about football (a Man City, a Man United and an Everton fan – so an interesting conversation was had).

We just wished that we had a local as special as the Barley Mow, as we could see ourselves spending a lot of time here – just a shame it’s 200 miles from home. If you are reading this review and wondering whether you should visit, just go for it, you won’t regret it.
Best of luck to the owners, don’t change this little gem, it’s perfect as it is!

“Absolutely fantastic!”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

If you want great home cooked pub food, with a fantastic atmosphere this is the place. The beers were lovely, the steak amazing and the 'monster' burger was exactly that. We had a fantastic welcome from the staff, especially landlady Collette, who couldn't be more friendly. To top it off our little westie was made to feel equally as welcome. I never write reviews but this one is very much desrvered and The Barley Mow is highly recommended.

“amazing and unique pub”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

i love this pub, they have a wide selection of food and drinks and the food is delicious. a little expensive but most places in the countryside are. they have hen racing which i love the sound of and ufo walks. there is a lot of history to the place and it is lovely to have a walk round Bonsall before or after you have been in the pub :)

“Great Pub”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Popped in at lunch for a quick drink and landlady and staff so friendly we returned on the evening to see the band and have a meal.
Had an absolutely fantastic night, food was okay but the main thing for us was the atmostphere in the place and how friendly everyone was, which was fortunate as we were packed in like sardines. No complaints about that though we had one of the best nights we have had in ages.
Lovely cosy country pub with loads of character (and characters) would highly recommend.
