Village is very nice under protection of UNESCO. You can see how Bulgarians were living in past mostly with power from water.

The Etar is an open air museum complex, situated in the vicinity of the Bulgarian town of Gabrovo (8km) and within the Nature Park Bulgarka. It revives the architecture, crafts and history of the region from 18-19c. It's an easy deviation from the highway Sofia- Varna, approx 50 km from the old capital Veliko Turnovo, and worth visiting for a couple of hours to watch the water-powered workshops, try the speciality lokum or bread, choose a souvenir from the craft shops (I bought a pair of hand made leather slippers for 25 leva; in London the same will set me back at least £40)...or just stroll around enjoying the peace of the green hills & the sound of the water. The museum organises craft bazaars & folklore events, and some craft shops offer training, too, pop in the exposition hall to find the guides who speak English.

Interesting place to see, though hard for me to read info since most is in Bulgarian, The bread alone makes it worth the trip.

The museum consists of a nice ensemble of houses and some shops. There is some attention to foreign tourists, but the main focus are school classes. The information on the houses is mostly in Bulgarian, as are explanations by people showng traditional handcrafts.
