If you want to avoid the tourists crowds in Southern Crete, I recommend Sunrise Apartments in Rodakino, Koraka Beach. They have a website for your info. The small family hotel/apartments are 50 mtr from the beach and have a nice pool set in a palm tree garden. The food is cooked by the owner, Manolia, and is excellent, which is important because there are almost no other restaurants around. The food in Sunrise is far superior to these few other restaurants. Real Cretan home cooking, different dishes every day. Koraka Beach is nice, but there are better beaches to drive to. You need a car to stay here to get anywhere at all. Closest place is Plakias which is a half hour drive over the mountains and gorges, fantastic views when driving. Plakias became more touristic over the years, but it is still a really nice beach town with lots of beautiful beaches to choose from. To the west is Frangokastello with a Venetian castle and Hora Sfakion which are also nice to visit and, again, spectacular views when driving (or hiking of course).
In closing, I would like to relay that there is a cute little museum in Asomatos (just above Plakias) of Papas Michaelis (89) who saved about everything in his life, you can see a.o. memoralia from WW-II (British helmets, locally published German WW-II newspapers, all the shoes of his daugther till age 18, etc.). We enjoyed it very much.
