“Excellent location, old world amenities”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

I was here for company meet and stayed with colleagues for 2 days. The location undoubtedly is the highlight of the place. You get sweeping views of the valley and waterfall from room, conference room, restaurant and roof top. The room I stayed in was decent and was adequately furnished. However the conference room looked really dated. The furniture and fixtures seemed very old, though well maintained. The food and service was quite good, and was had nice variety and delicious food in all 3 meals for both days. THe staff seemed eager to help and was attentive. Overall it was a positive experience, but it would help if hotel could spruce up the corridors and conference room.

Room Tip: Ask for side with valley view

I stayed in Duke's Retreat with few other colleagues as we had a business off-site. We stayed there for 2 nights and 3 days in August 2013 and for most part of our stay, we were confined in the hotel - either in our rooms or in the conference room. It was raining cats and dogs all through our stay.

The room was alright, but none of us got a room with great view. I got a room with a small, not-so-clean balcony, but it was kind of okay for us - as our purpose of visit was different. The rooms as such was quite neat and there are no complaints about that. The restaurant was also good and we found both the breakfast and lunch to be quite decent. On one of the evenings, we helped ourselves to few sofas just outside the bar and had a wonderful time. We should commend the service of the staff. Despite the fact that the bar wound up by 11 pm, we were served until 1 am by a helpful staff member.

As for the conference room, it was good if not great. Wi-Fi was working good. Over all, excellent service, great location, nice food and decent rooms. What more do you need? :)

Dear Guest,

We thank you for choosing to stay with us on your recent business trip to Khandala and sharing your experience on TripAdvisor with fellow travelers.

It fills us with immense delight to know that you found our services and the overall ambience of the place at par with your expectations. In the lap of nature, Dukes Retreat is an ideal retreat for business as well as leisure travelers. However, I am disappointed that you did not get a chance to explore the region around due to the rains. We wish the next time you visit us, you find an opportunity to discover the local scenic beauty as well as the hill station’s quaint attraction.

Once again, we thank you for your support and hope to have the pleasure of your continued visits to our hotel.

From almost every part of the hotel, you get great views of the valley and the waterfall. The rooftop pool, cafe and bar are all very welcoming and you can spend hours there if the weather is right. The staff is helpful, prompt and very experienced. The food is decent. It has a likeable feel typical of older properties... that is not achieved by newer hotels. Its a well-oiled machine so there is no miscommunication or mishandling. Overall, there is no better property in Khandala-Lonavala.
Tip: The best time to enjoy the place is when the monsoon starts receding so you don't get fogged out. End September is ideal.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are massive so even with 2 grown up children, you do not need an extra room. Just p...

We have now stayed at the Dukes Retreat 2 times in two years. Both times we pre-booked ourselves for their standard rooms (not suites) with a view of the lush valley and the Expressway below.

Positives: locations is excellent. Sitting in the balcony of your room, you can take in the full landscape of the lush green hills and waterfalls. Outdoor cafe and swimming pool are also very good in terms of ambience. And it is conveniently located close to the point where one leaves the Expressway to enter Khandala. So you miss the traffic mayhem further down towards Lonavala where the highway sort becomes a city-road choked with tourist traffic

Negatives: There are plenty of these:
- Booking mayhem: First of all, they don't take bookings after 6pm or so (forget the exact time) which makes no sense in today's day and age. So we booked online on one of the aggregator websites like Makemytrip etc. When we showed them the copy of the confirmation at the time of checking-in, they had no record of my booking. Apparently they never received any communication from the website we booked on. That's bizarre!! I have made similar bookings with other hotels and never had issues. Seems like the issue was on the part of the hotel. However, despite booking a standard room with the good view, they tried to allot us one of the suites they had in the name of "upgrading" and by lying to us that none of the standard rooms were readily available (despite the advance booking). These suites were big all right but had a terrible view and since we had only gone for one night we insisted on getting the standard rooms with the view. Due to our insistence, they finally gave us a standard room in 10-15 mins which bore out their lie that none of the standard rooms were available (which we had suspected anyway)!!

- Food sucks. Try not to book for a combo deal including lunch and dinner. Breakfast is highly average. There are better eating options for meals within short distance of the hotel - Fariyas is one of them

- Service is poor. The balcony of the room was not completely clean. It took time for room service to respond to requests. They are no longer a part of Keys Resorts either.

Overall, I think paying ~Rs. 10-12000 all inclusive for a night at the Duke's Retreat is very expensive and you don't get your money's worth. It can pass off as an expensive indulgence once, for the view esp., but I would not come back.

The only reason I am ranking it as an "avg" and not "poor" despite my rants about the place is the spectacular views it offers for a relaxed weekend for a harried Mumbaikar

Room Tip: Opt for the standard rooms. They have great views of the lush valley and waterfalls in front. Avoid...

visited this hotel to celebrate my wife's birthday..and these guys made it truly special for us.They decorated the room, kept a bouquet and even arranged a cake.Special thanks to Mr Abhishekh, for giving us a room with an excellent view and overall is a very friendly and helpful staff. The food is another plus, tasty and served with a smile. It was raining intermittently but the housekeeping were on their toes to ensure it would be wiped dry after every heavy shower. There was a magic show on one of the mornings, which was quite entertaining for us and our 3 year old..to sum it up, a very good experience which left some great memories..
