Its a fort which is easily accessible from lonavala. There are private cabs from lonavala which take you to the base of fort in 50Rs. From here the descend to fort hardly takes around 15 mins. It has proper steps constructed to reach at top. Even elderly people can easily reach to the top. Second route to reach Lohagad fort is from bhaje village which is at a distance of 30 mins from malavali station by walk. At the start of village you will come across a big waterfall with nice clean water. After the waterfall there are two routes, one which goes to bhaje caves(one with steps), other which goes to lohagad. One can also visit bhaje caves before actually starting for lohagad fort. Go following the second route to reach the base of lohagad fort. Its about 2 hours walk with average ascend in between. There are 2 more huge waterfalls on the way where you can relax. There are also many small stalls placed by local villagers which serve corns, bhurji pav, vada pav, chips, water, pakodas etc. You can place your order for food also on some of these stalls which prepare food for you if you place your order or also at the base of lohagad fort. I would recomend you to place order at base of lohagad fort since you have options to choose for. They also provide you with rooms in their home for changing and freshniing up. Food prepared by villagers is good. They serve you with lots of hospitality.

Tip:- Beware of mokeys. Do not open any eatables after you reach base of fort tilll you reach the top, monkeys will easily snatch things from you. In this process you might get hurt also.

I have been to Lohgad many times - the most recent trip being in August 2013. Here are a few tips:

Best time to visit:
Rainy season (June-August) - The fort gets hidden in the clouds all throughout the rains. It adds a wonderful dimension to the hike. If you want better views, then avoid this season.

Hike difficulty:
It is one of the easiest hikes in Maharashtra - You just need to be able to walk. It can be done as a day hike, if you travel from Pune or Mumbai

Route finding:
Easy - If you come from Lonavla, there are shared taxis from Lonavla railway station that take you right till the base of the fort. You just have to climb a few hundred steps to reach the top.
However, if you want a longer walk, get down at Malavli railway station (before Lonavla towards Pune) and walk till the top.

Food:
There are stalls on the way and a few restaurants at the base. You get pretty much everything.

Forts near by:
Visapur fort is a majestic fort right next to Lohgad. Visapur is a longer hike and route finding is not that easy. Visapur can also be done as a day hike - Doing both Visapur and Lohgad in a single day will require a good level of fitness.

Summary:
A beautiful hike especially in the monsoon.

A beautiful fort in a beautiful location, good roads to the base and an easy climb make Lohagad fort one of the more popular destinations to visit close to Pune. But thankfully, it has survived the commercialisation and the mess that Sinhagad fort has been subjected to. The fort is still in a good condition and relatively clean. Many of the structures on the fort are still intact and climbing the fort would give you the feeling of actually climbing a fort rather than walk on “made in 21st century” concrete steps!
The trekking route to Lohagad is easy even when it rains and is an ideal '1st trek experiance' with picturesque scenery, lush green grass, cool mountain air, and the pleasant salubrious climate. Lohagad is an ideal one day trek because of its ease and accesibility thanks to the local trains.
Karla Caves - Caves near Lohagad

The Karla Caves is a complex of ancient Buddhist rock-cut shrines in Karla near Lohagad, believed to be built between the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD and from the 5th century AD to the 10th century AD. The complex is one of the finest examples of the ancient rock-cut caves found in India. The oldest of the cave shrines is believed to date back to 160 BC.

Most of such treking forts are suffering due to inadequate or no facility of toilets, chaning room or rest room, If you are driving for Lohgarh for the first time there is no proper direction signs on its way from Mumbai & Pune. Can't visit this place with family as nearst facilities is at lonavala. The best home made food of Pitla Bhakhari is served at one point but they also do not help in any manner. Nice Location and Waterfalls but poor facilities.
