took a Group of 30 persons to this Hotel, People being aged from 14 to 80. The Hotel is perfect, wonderfully equipped, rooms are spacious with good bathrooms and WC, buffet breakfast is a dream.
But I could not say, if this is always or just because of Soccer world Cup right now. The Hotel was full of extremely loud and misbehaving Young persons, who stayed up all night, played loudly Music or even Soccer in the hallways, in the morning the place outside the Hotel was full with empty bottles, Cups and glasses,
Staff was very nice and friendly, and always promised to do something about the Problem of noise, but as it continued, I cannot say, if the just promised

Room Tip: we preferred the rooms in the 3rd floor, less banging of doors and a good view

After booking this hotel and seeing all the reviews I was expected more..

The hotel perhaps is in an old factory building that was renovated to be a "passive house" hotel. We did not had any problem with the room temperature even though outside was quite warm so most likely it is working OK. This is just a note that there are no A/C in the room and you cannot open the window either because of the "passive house" concept.

At arrival (9pm) there was a big school group and they were noisy, during all evening they were running up and down so it felt like being back at the university in the hostel rather then being in a modern hotel.

When we arrived we had to pay the extra 1.50€ charge for some local tax.

Room was on the 3rd floor and looked at the back of the hotel where is a 4 floor normal housing with people living there (and they are looking back to you if you look outside :-)).

The room was a 6 person room with 2 bunk bed and 1 queen size bed. I had no problem on the queen size bed but one of my son was complaining about the bunk bed being too hard for him (my other 2 kids had no problem). Only the queen size bed was made when we arrived so be prepared to do also some bedding before kids can go to sleep.

The toilet was rather big (echoing :-)), the shower sink had some problem or perhaps too many person wanted to shower at the same time since it was not draining the water away too fast (you were standing in 5-10cm water) also the temperature was varying a bit.

The hotel surrounding and Brussels generally seemed for us quite littery...

BTW: We had arrived to Brussels Midi station at 8pm and it took us more than 1 hour to find what ticket to buy and how to get to the hotel (although it is about 20 minutes away from there). At the station the public transport ticket office guy was less then helpful (he seemed quite bored with his life and job) so when we asked help what ticket to buy he just pointed the nearby price table to select myself what I want (without too much knowledge what is it good for). So, it is better if you prepare yourself beforehand how to get to the hotel and what tickets you want/need. (we actually bought the Discover Brussels 24h ticket but it might not be the best option since kids had to pay the same 7 euro - we still do not know).

I had reserved what I thought was a family room directly with the hotel. When we arrived at 10 am after an overnight flight, and found the hotel after a long walk from the metro, we were told that the room we had reserved had six beds and since there were only four of us they planned to put two strangers in the room. There was no indication on the hotel website that what I had reserved was a hostel room; the reference to "dormitory beds" I thought was their reference to the twin bunk beds that the room picture showed. When I said that this was a mistake and asked them to put us in a private room, they said none was available. When I found another hotel nearby with an appropriate room and asked Meininger to refund the room cost, they refused. At that point I raised my voice, and suddenly they "found" a family room that mysteriously hadn't been there before, but of course no room in the hotel could possibly be available before 3 pm. So we dragged ourselves around for six hours, and came back to find our family room had not been made up, no towels, no bars of soap, etc. We spent half an hour, exhausted, making the beds, went down to the front desk to get towels, went out to the convenience store to get bars of soap, and then tried to go to bed. Unfortunately the noise in the place would wake even the sleep of the dead. Between 3:20 am and 3:40 am I counted nine door slams, one drunk man singing at the top of his lungs, and one woman screaming. Although breakfast was included, the quality of the food was poor, and there were signs on the table warning you not to take any food from the room unless you were willing to pay extra euros. The hotel is in a bad location, across the canal from the main part of the city and in between two bridges over the canal so that it is difficult to walk downtown. The area felt unsafe, there were cafes in the area where there were only men, the nearby streets are covered in graffiti, the hotel exterior looks like a prison. The metro stop is a longish walk away and the ticket machines do not take American credit cards even those with chips, and there is no ticket seller in the station, so unless you have the foresight to buy tickets at the main train station before you arrive you can't get out. All in all this was a bad experience and in any future trip I would pay more and stay downtown.

Meininger is hopefully the new generation of hostels. It's clean, modern and stylish.
The Brussels outlet is well located just 5 minutes from a Subway station (Graaf van Vlanderen)
in a fairly central area. The breakfast is excellent with a good selection of meats and cheeses. In fact I'd say the breakfast is second only to Haraldsheim Hostel in Oslo. I liked how there are also single beds as well as bunks. So far only New Zealand hostels generally offer single beds so it was a surprise here.
Only negative points are:
Drinks are stupidly expensive (€3 for a can of ice tea)
The lock is broken on the bathroom of room 131
The keycard system means other guests in the room have to tell you when they're going out or the electricity switches off when they take their card out!

Staying in this hostel is like staying in a hotel for the price of a hostel! I was in a 4 person dorm and it was fantastic! They had lockers right in the room, each bed had it's own reading light and the shower was clean and had amazing water pressure! It isn't in the city centre so if you want to see the tourist attractions you do have to walk a little but
