“CANT FORGET IT”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2012

We had a 3 day stay at Kolavara Heritage Homestay. Beautiful place. All the reviews are totally true. Vathsalya and Nischal were very polite and treated us like guests. The food was amazing. Every meal had a malnad cuisine special item. We relished the obattu, the bread halwas, appam, idiappam, neerdosa, akki roti, masala roti, jackfruit bajji, curd vada to name a few. Great place for people who love nature. No mobile signal or internet connectivity. Very ideal to destress and stay away from your routine. Trekking in the nearby hill was just superb. There is a tunga river nearby and it is a safe place with no one to disturb. We had a great time soaking ourselves in water. Hot water was available 24x7. The best part is all the workers in the place are nice and smiling. Wish we could stay a little longer.

Room Tip: They have a nice big room with 2 twin beds and a single bed suitable for 5 people.

First we decided what kind of holiday we want, a Family of four, Home stay, no swimming pool, billiards,AC,TV, continental food ( cooked by professional hotel cooks) etc , for all these we dont have to travel 330 Kms from Bangalore. We had had experience of home stay at coorg some time back, and had decided on a home stay holiday again, where we were looking for Good ,authentic, malnad ,vegetarian, food; good hospitality, far from the crowd and city . i wanted my vacation to begin with the journey (drive from Bangalore ) wanted to enjoy my journey as much as the stay, the best stretch of the drive was from Shivmoga to Thirthahalli.
Once in the home stay, we were guests of a family unlike a hotel where we are guests but of a corporate/ company Hotel..

Food was excellent, variety of food amazing, trekking (with Nagabushan as our guide) was fun, Poets home now a museum and the place where he got his inspiration was breath taking, we did not go to Agumbae,( as the ones that went the previous day said that the roads were bad.

Hospitality was at its best at Kolavara, would definitely recommend to people who are looking forward to a similar holiday, ie no music , Tv, swimming pool etc, but to relax, rejuvenate, recharge,. Definitely safe to go to with family. If you are from outside Karnataka and want to know how good people of my state are , this is the place.

Room Tip: Rooms next to the open veranda seemed to be better, but my room was also comfortable.

Kolavera is secluded from the hustle bustle of the usual city life. Situated exactly 300 kms from Bengaluru it is surrounded by areca plantations and scenic views. The Kolavera house is a beautiful heritage property with a perfect home stay experience - starting from birds waking you up to the fresh nip in the air with a tinge of firewood fragrance coming from the kitchen to compliment your breakfast ambiance - a fresh filter coffee to a walk into the areca estate - authentic Malnad lunch to comforting yourself in the cozy beds for a quick recharge nap for a small nature walk around the plantation followed by a camp fire accompanying hot "yummy" fried snacks ,soup & a hearty chat with the hosts.

There was loads of entertainment in the games room for the kids (and adults sometimes) and we just loved the down time lazing, doing nothing, chatting, sipping hot strong coffee and amazing passion fruit juice, tender coconut water(another good part). We had the exclusivity of the place, being served, pampered like Kings & Queens.

The good thing about Kolavera is the approach road which is a superbly laid out NH 13. Right from Shivamogga city to Kolavera, the road journey is a breeze. In fact this place is strategically situated close to many tourist destinations like Agumbe, Kundadri, Sringeri, Sirimane falls & Kupli. All these places are a photographers delight.

The hosts, Nischal, Vatsalya and their entire family are extremely hospitable and are ever ready taking care of the guests needs. Their ever smiling face and the warmth displayed is un-matched and simply outstanding. All in all, a fantastic time spent and we are already planning the next trip.

Nishchal, Vatsalya… see you soon. And off course, thanks a ton for making our stay extremely memorable.

We were two families consisting of. 4 adults and 3 children and wanted to stay a in place that had plenty of open space in a relaxed natural environment. We found the Kolavara Homestay on the Internet and consider ourselves extremely lucky.

On arrival for lunch, we were greeted by Uncle and Aunty (who own this place) and treated with a traditional malanad lunch. The food was very health and great to taste and continued to remain so over the next 3 days with various dishes we had each day. Absolutely great food served in abundance and great hospitality. The owner's son Nischal and his wife Vatsalya who had helped us the booking were present all times and I must say that we were floored by the hospitality.

The rooms provided were large and clean and considering the farm setting, completely insect free. The rooms were serviced every day and everything was neat and clean.

The common dining are was spacious enough to accommodate at least 4 families. The children loved the outdoor activities and there were TT, Shuttle and other games for the kids. There was also a small waterfall inside the property and it was fun for the kids. Since this was a farm house , we could spot a few things like garden crabs, camouflaged toads, giant millipedes etc.,

We must mention here that the owner's son Nischal and his wife Vatsalya were extremely friendly and were present at the dining room most times we had food to enquire about our needs and kept on serving us with great food.

Nishcal helped us go for a small trek opposite the property. The trek was about 1.5 kilometres and was done in about 90 minutes. We took a very small break in between and were rewarded with a panoramic view after we climbed the top.The children loved the trek very much though it was a bit slippery for the ladies but nothing very difficult.

We went to Sringeri which was close by and had a peaceful darshan and after lunch visited Sirimane falls which was about 5 km from Sringeri.

When it was time to get back to chennai, all of us wished we just had more time to stay at the Kolavara Heritage. We would definitely like to go back whenever time permits.

Please visit this place only if you want to spend quality time with nature. There are no televisions or phones in the rooms and we liked it this way. There is no connectivity as well so we were kept away from our work. We got Airtel and BSNL signal just a few metres away from
our rooms.

Room Tip: If you had family with two kids, ask for the room close to the entrance. It has an extra room and ut...

We planned a trip with my parents and our 2 little boys aged 6 and 3, to this charmed little corner of Karnataka towards the end of May just before summer vacations came to an end, and savoured every moment of our journey and the stay at Kolavara Heritage. First off, we highly recommend Kolavara Heritage to anybody who wants to experience the pleasures of true Malenadu hospitality, and get a glimpse into the lives of the Malenadu Gowda community, a farming community in the region.

True to its name, the house of Kolavara is a beautiful heritage property surrounded by a well-tended garden and an areca plantation. The house itself is a tastefully decorated Chowki or Thotti Mane with an open courtyard in the centre, and has been home to several generations of the Kolavara family. The courtyard has a beautiful stone Thulasi Katte that is decorated and worshipped by the womenfolk of the house every day, in-keeping with the Kannada tradition.

The charming and genteel hosts ensured we were comfortable throughout our stay, and lavished guests with authentic Malenadu delicacies cooked to perfection during every meal.....Kadubu, Shevige, Hurali Kattu, Maavina Gojju, Rotti, Neer Dose, Koli Saaru, Hulisoppu, Halasinakaayi Palya (raw jackfruit dish) and many more rare culinary gems of the State of Karnataka, one never gets to taste in Bangalore! Hailing from the region ourselves, we could vouch for the authenticity of each of these dishes.

The family has a taste for all things beautiful......the lady of the house, a gifted cook and an avid
gardener, has several horticultural awards under her belt. Don't miss her collection of bonsais and anthuriams. The hosts also offered us a variety of home-made wines to taste – jamun fruit, jackfruit, ginger, grape, banana and many more exotic flavours, and we ended-up buying a few flavours!

The place is a birders' paradise and I had my first sighting of an Asian Fairy Blue Bird pair in the family's coffee estate right behind their bungalow! A pair of raucous Common Kingfishers livened-up one of our lazy afternoons on the estate garden. The dense foliage made sighting challenging and I heard birdcalls of the Malabar Whistling Thrush, Hornbills and Drongos among many other bird calls that I couldn't identify.

On one of the mornings, Nischal, our host, drove us to a beautiful stream nearby and we spent a fun-filled morning frolicking in the stream. The next morning, we were taken on a steep but short trek to a view-point. We also visited our favourite haunt Kuppali, the homestead of Jnanapeeta Awardee Kuvempu, the celebrated Kannada poet laureate. We’ve frequented Kuppali many times in the last few years and never seem to tire of it.

Wrapping it all up, this trip felt more like a summer visit to one’s ancestral home. The
cute little daughter of the house was delightful company throughout our stay.

This review was long overdue….thank you Murthy Uncle, Kala Aunty, Vaathsalya and Nischal for opening your home and hearts to us! We are sure to return..:-)

The place is located amidst nature with its own private waterfall (the kids loved this) and a very spacious seating outdoors with lot of indoor games which keep you engaged with family and friends. The food was awesome with local cuisine and so much variety across breakfast, lunch and dinner. The large dining hall, game area and huge lawns make up for the dimly lit rooms which one needs to go only for the night sleep. Ideal place for a long weekend with sight seeing at drivable distance. Mobile signals do not come inside the house (possibly a boon) but within the compound area. What stands out is the hospitality of all the family members. Having had a city upbringing, they know the right balance between taking care and giving adequate privacy.
