Little in the way of directions as to how to find the fortress, we just drove around!
It's a beautiful castle, fairly complete and located on the banks of the Danube. There is some information about the castle and a layout diagram, but when you get inside there is little. There is a steep slope from one level to the upper level which when we were there was damp. As the cobbles are shinny it was like walking on ice. The is a one hand rail but it stops short of the bottle. If walking is a problem this is probably best not tackled.

The fortress is a excellent example of ancient architecture. Partially restored it is a well known local attraction. While visiting I inadvertently crashed a Bulgarian wedding. Folk music in costume and watched as the bride and groom broke a loaf of bread over their heads in Bulgarian tradition. Sunbathers and fisherman were out in force on the river side of the fortress. A very interesting visit. A must visit if in Vidin.

Baba Vida is gracefully situated on the bench of the Danube river. It is surprisingly well preserved (or better to say, reconstructed), with a few installations in some of the first "cells" following the entrance. It has a spectacular view over the river and with its summer theater represents a great place for events - weddings for example. In my view it is much nicer than Tzarevetz.

The Babini Vidini Kuli fortress, also known as Baba Vida Fortress is situated on an area of 9.5 decares on the bank of the river Danube, in the northern part of Vidin.
According to a legend, Vida had been the eldest daughter of a wealthy Bulgarian boyar. Due to the unsuccessful marriages of her sisters – Kula and Gamza, Vida rejected all of the proposals for marriage, built the castle and remained in it for the rest of her life.
The fortress is surrounded by a moat, which was sometimes filled with water from the river Danube, and the bridge was mobile. Baba Vida had nine corner and intermediate towers with the walls and the towers ending with loop-holes.
At the moment two of the towers are accessible for visiting. There is a prison in the fortress, in which torture devices can be seen. The figures of an executioner and a prisoner are attractive to take pictures with. Cannons and gallows are exposed on one of the terraces.

The curious thing about this fortress is that they´ve used the water of the Danube river to fill up the drench and protect the walls, from the outside it seem quite short but indeed it´s half buried underground!
