“Nice location, okay hotel”

Well, as with most HPTDC hotels, this one too is conveniently located yet in a beautiful location with nice views. The hotel and the room are extremely basic in terms of comfort and devoid of comforts of modern hotel stay. However, the room service staff is extremely friendly and the overall service levels good, reflecting the Himachal hospitality. HPTDC needs to however add some frills and provide more value addition.

The snag about the place is that there is nothing much to do in Narkanda unless its either Winter with snow or if the apple trees are filled with fruit. Well, we did get some fresh snow near the Hatu peak area, en route to the Temple atop the mountain.

Room Tip: Good place but poor access and road quality

We went to Shimla in April to have a pause from the hectic and busy life and relax in the lap of nature. We spent 2 days in shimla visited Mall road , Sanjauli , Coffee House and various other places but since it was very crowded, we changed our mind and started looking for some other better option. On the Mall road just aside the ICICI bank ATM there is the HPDTC tourist help Center where we enquired about few other good options. They suggested us Chail,Fagu and Narkanda. We picked randomly Narkanda for rest of the 3 days of our visit. They told that the best hotel in that area is the HATU a HPDTC property. Luckily we got an accomodation in the hotel. It was arount 1800 Rs for 1 double delux room.It is about 60 odd KM from shimla and have a very good connectivity by bus or cabs.We hired a cab for 1200Rs.
When we reached there by arount 3 pm, since we already had a booking it was not a problem. The hotel is located in a very beautiful location and have its own garden too. The rooms were sparious and very clean. They do not have much staff only few people around but they are highly trained and proffessional.Food was really great specially palak paneer but u have to finish it off as early as possible coz it gets cool down within minutes. They also serve wines and alchoholic drinks.Very prompt room service.
We had BF next morning in the garden. It is named The hatu because of the Hatu peak which is arount 6-7 km form there. Hotel also arrange Mountain bykes on rent for around 350Rs per day.
We enjoyed our stay in that hotel and really provides value for money thought its a bit expensive.
Toilets are very clean and maintained properly.
Location is awesome. Also its a few meters away from the main road from where u get the buses back to shimla.
Staff is very helpfull.
Manager is nice person who gives all the information u want. There is narkanda map also on the wall.
Food is great with various kinds of drinks.
we strongly recommend Narkanda and The hatu hotel...

The first look of the hotel, its location just steals your heart. The location is majestic surrounded by hills. We were 5 people . two couples , one child. There are three - 4 categories of rooms available and we got one DBR deluxe (Rs 2100) and one Rs 1200. Room Reviews
1) Standard room : Pathetic room by every aspect. The room was stinky and small. We berely were able to stay in the room. Bathroom was big and that was the only saving grace. I would recommend if you are getting this room please look for other hotel

2)DBR deluxe room: This was a nice room . Clean, big and with a decent bathroom. even the location was nice and it gave a nice view of hills.

A good thing about the hotel is a nice lawn to sit back , relax and have enjoy beer/ tea etc, There is also place for kids to play and we had ample sessions of fotball and cricket. If you are fond of waliking in the hills this is the place to be. The hotel has places to venture out for trek and be in natures arms. There is Hatu peak (8 km trek) just nearby.

Food is at best decent and the service is a little on the slow side but doesn matter if you are going for a laid back trip
The weather is really nice and keep warm clothes even if you are going in June

The Narkanda region is not on the usual tourist circuit and it is for this reason that it is a haven for those who just want nature and peace.

The Hatu is a mid range hotel, run by Himachal Pradesh' state tourism department. It is the perfect place to be. The friendly staff, ably steered by Mr Rajinder Sharma, a local, are warm, welcoming and very helpful.

Located on top of a hillock at approx. 2800m, the hotel enjoys fabulous views of pine forests, valleys, the Hatu peak (3189m) and surrounding mountain ranges. The rooms are reasonably large, simply furnished but comfortable with heaters and extra quilts thrown in for good measure. All rooms have big picture windows. The bathrooms are spotless with hot water heaters.

We had Indian meals throughout . Our first dinner was so finger licking good, we decided to stick to a good thing and preferred not to experiment with the Continental and Chinese fare on offer. The food had a home cooked quality. Despite walking almost 15-20km every day, we ended up gaining weight - but it was worth it! Do try the local fruit wines.

Booking for The Hatu can be done online through the Himachal Pradesh Tourism website, or through their centres in various Indian cities.

Attractions close by:
The Hatu Peak is about 7km away along a motorable road. It is much more pleasant to walk. On a clear day you will get a 360 degree view of snow capped peaks from the summit. There is also a PWD rest house, and a plush new temple under construction at the peak. The Jau Bagh (Jor Bagh) meadows are a short walk along the Hatu ridge.

Coniferous forests and small wildflower filled meadows abound, ideal for walking, or bicycle rides for the more energetic. Mountain bicycles can be rented from the hotel.

The ski slopes at Dhumri are just off the main Narkanda market place, also walkable distance. In winter, The Hatu offers skis on rent for those who are interested, and assuming there is enough snow. Apparently the last two years have not seen much skiing quality snow. The Dhumri slopes make a beautiful uphill walk in the summer.

Day trips can be made to the Thanedar Kotgarh apple belts, and down to the Sutlej valley below. Sarahan with its Bhimakali temple is another day excursion, as is the Jallori Pass across the Sutlej.

In April and May you will also get the finest cherries in the Narkanda belt, June is the month for apples. Apricots, plums and almonds are also grown here. The shops in the Narkanda market offer fresh horticultural produce at competitive prices.

The Hatu is also a good night stop for those headed to Sangla and the Kinnaur district.

I would definitely go there again.

Located in the himalayas it is a peaceful small place but busting with activity due to its link to the interior of Himachal. Narkanda is ideal for those who want some peace, fresh air and a little adventure. The famous Narkand skii slopes are under snow even in february. There are training guides available for skii lovers at Rs 200 per hour. The ski slopes are 1.5 km walk from the town....and is great fun to treck.
Hatu peak is some 16 km away. We couldnt go there as the roads were blocked by snow.
The hotel is a budget hotel and belongs to hptdc. Location is excellent and rooms are cozy with heaters......not available in any of the other small time hotels there. Hptdc gives a discount of 20 % only even in off seasons.
Class food was not available in the small market therefore we had to settle for the hotel food which was good. The approach road is narrow and meanders to a hilltop where the hotel is located.
A Tibiten couple run a small eatery in the town. The soup they serve was good. The drive to Narkanda is picturesque... though long 55 kn from Shimla.
