“Fantastic combination of luxury and family-friendliness”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We're just back from a great skiing week at the end of March 2013.
Das Urbisgut is a great hotel that manages to cater for families in a very friendly way, balancing an informal manner with excellent service.
We had half board, which was a buffet breakfast (great choice of cooked foods and cold buffet) and 5 course dinner which was simply delicious. Where the food was too rich or novel for the kids (8 & 11) it was never too much trouble for the kitchen to prepare them something to order (from lasagne or schnitzel to "the best chicken nuggets ever").
The room was warm, cosy, had a separate bedroom for the kids, a good bathroom, seating area and balcony and was spotlessly clean.
There's a very good "Wellness" centre in the cellar (steam rooms, sauna, infrared booth) and a small swimming pool, which the kids enjoyed.
The other guests were a mixture of families and couples without children, with neither group being the odd one out as can happen in some hotels that welcome families.
We had a car and used that for trips out to different ski areas each day, so for us the location was excellent - but you don't have the ski-in, ski-out experience here (the ski bus does stop immediately outside and takes 10-15 minutes to reach the slopes). We visited Zauchensee, Wagrain, Flachau, Flachauwinkel and Altenmarkt easily, parking was no problem and all the runs were open (though some of the lower slopes were a bit slushy by the end of the sunnier afternoons).
The kids went to ski school in Zauchensee, but that was a mistake, as the Balla school (which was the only one that had space) is more of a babysitting service than a place to improve your technique - it was also very expensive. We'd go for the Weltmeister school next time.
We flew from Manchester to Munich and then drove the rest of the way, but next time we'd fly to Salzburg if we could find decent flights.
Very highly recommended, and a better welcome would be very hard to find.

We have been to this hotel more than 10 times and we keep coming back and have been both in summer and winter time.
Location
The hotel is a short 5 minutes drive from the highway and ideally located in the outskirts of the picturesque Altenmarkt village (5 minute walk) with good options for some shopping. There is about a 25 minute drive to Salzburg, Hotel is located in a very quiet place with great views of the forest and mountains - the hotel grounds are large and has a playground for children.
Activities
In winter, skiing is the main activity and main skilifts are only a short drive away (ski bus stops right outside the hotel), there are cross country skiing tracks just behind the hotel and many walking tracks to keep you occupied should the weather not be good.
Summer is great with options for hiking, mountain biking (rent at one of the many sport shops in town), paragliding or going for long walks in the fantastic surroundings.
5 minutes by foot is the Terme Amade which is a brand new indoor waterpark with pools and slides as well as a great wellness area.
Rooms
Rooms comes in many sizes and you will have no problem finding one that suits you - as we are traveling with children, we opt for the 2 bedroom rooms. Rooms are sparkling clean, beds are great and all have large TV's with some international channels.
Facilities
Hotel has a large common area where you can hang out at the bar after ski or dinner - children's play area in the basement offers table tennis, pool and fuss ball table. There is a nice pool area as well as a well equipped sauna/steam area for relaxing after a day of activities
Food
The half board option is great value for money and breakfast will surely set you up for a long day of activities. The real treat is served at dinner time where you will enjoy a 6 course dinner which is always well prepared and extremely delicious (you choose one of 3 main courses at breakfast so there will always be something you like).

Overall, this is a great family run hotel and the warmth of the welcome that the Bittersam family provides along with the facilities, rooms, food and the great location makes this a hotel we keep coming back to...

Room Tip: All rooms are great with balconies having great views and chairs for catching a ray of sun. If you a...

after a long planeride and cartrip we arrived at the urbisgut and immediately felt we had come home. The reception by the owners is wonderful. The rooms sparkling clean, spacious and with all the comfort you could want. Table and chair, couch, balcony, inviting beds. Internet is easy to hook up in the room, we had forgotten our cable at home and were provided with one before we had reached the room. The food is an experience just in itself. A 5 course meal awaited us in the friendly atmosphere in the diningroom. The calming vies around are heavenly. We had such a relaxed time on our layover stay that on the way back we stayed 2 days. And will do it again.! Thank you to the wonderful peaople at the Urbisgut
