“Interesting, historical mansion”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

Previous reviewers have described the quiet, sumptuous house built in 1929 by a wealthy tea family, still retaining all the interesting period furnishings and pictures. The garden is equally splendid but partly marred by a swimming pool on the front lawn with its uninviting water. There's a small, quiet shrine in the back garden. We stayed just 24 hours, but long enough to have lunch, supper and breakfast which were very good and served in the grand dining room. There were plenty of staff for our stay; the head man spoke adequate English and the others had just enough to get by. Our bedroom was huge and comfortable. The bathroom’s shower and washbasin were inadequate by modern standards and it wouldn’t spoil the house to upgrade these, indeed it would enhance the place significantly. We were well looked after in an otherwise lovely house, although I don’t think more than a two night stay could be recommended.

in december we stayed at Thengal Manor for three nights.
It was far too short a stay.
The property is superbly maintained, the rooms are gracious and comfortable, the food is delightful and the staff provide absolutely first class service.
The Manor grounds spread over several acres and are meticulously maintained.
We could not recommend this establishment more highly.

Room Tip: All the rooms are absolutely first class!!

This facility is lovely. It is undergoing renovations. The shower didnt work properly. There were no signs at all of any management. This could have been because we were the only guests present. The dinner and Breakfast which came with our stay was very good. Apparently there are several interesting things to do near Jorhat but our non English speaking guide wasnt able to communicate with us about these attractions so we just hung around this remarkable historic tea estate. Strange.

Room Tip: Make sure the shower works.

I spent four nights at Thengal Manor recently while photographing primates at nearby Hoollangapar Gibbon Sanctuary. My room was amazing, qute large and more than comfortable, and the historic charm and atmosphere of the place was great. I enjoyed wandering around the extensive and well-manicured grounds. On the down side, the shower didn't work properly and just dribbled water, the food was good but not great, and the recently constructed swimming pool in front was a really bad idea and had turned into an algal soup. The staff was helpful and cooperative in adjusting meal times to coincide with my photography schedule, although it was never quite clear who exactly was in charge. Overall, I really enjoyed the place and would definitely recommend staying there.

We spent one night at Thengal Manor en route to Majuli Island. Thengal Manor is situated outside Johat. The property was built in 1929 and therefore has the style of the Edward Lutyens bungalows in Delhi. It has been recently restored and, we are told, it is the more representative property of the period amongst 2 other properties under the “Welcome Heritage “ management (Burra Sahib’s and Mistry Sahibs bungalows). The property itself and the grounds are excellent. However the cleanliness, lack of attention to detail, average food and initial cool reception shows the weakness of remote management. Every room and hallway is stuffed with family heirlooms and while one is happy to dine under the gaze of an occasional antelope or tiger, we found the collective gaze of uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters all over the house cuts your appetite. The rooms are tastelessly cluttered with bric a brac that collect dust.
Considering the price of the stay, Thengal is bad value for money. It could be excellent and worth every rupee if it had the right woman running it.

This is the second WelcomHeritage hotel I've stayed in in Eastern India and both have been disappointing. I would describe this as a bed and breakfast and wonder if it would be better if it was family run. It is a lovely house with 5 spacious and beautiful bedrooms and a nice front porch for relaxing in the evenings. However, the house is simply not well maintained and not what I would expect from an ITC run facility. Unfortunately, it is not kept very clean. There are stains on some of the furniture. The bathroom towels are worn and stained. They try to be first class but don't quite make it. For example, while they use very nice china that must have belonged to the owner of the manor, they then mix in newer uninteresting serving ware ruining the effect of eating off old china. Service is average. We called ahead one day and ordered lunch since we were running late and had a very short time to eat - they forgot half the order. The food was so-so. We had sandwiches several days and the bread got more and more stale - made me wonder if they bought a fresh loaf on our first day and just used the same loaf through the entire stay. The Queen size bed was very comfortable, but unfortunately, the AC would run only if the voltage stabilizer ran and it was so loud I couldn't sleep. So, I turned off the AC and the room was stuffy. Unfortunately, there are no screens on the windows, so I couldn't open them for the cool night breeze without being attacked by mosquitoes. The house is also very noisy - I could hear everything my colleague said and did in the room next to me - and the kitchen staff were very noisy in the mornings. The grounds could be very nice but they are not well maintained. They are building a pool in the front of the manor that destroys the view from the porch. The worst surprise, however, was the 10% service charge - I've traveled a lot and rarely have I been billed by a hotel for a service charge. If the service had been great I would have been happy to pay; however, service was average. While I would have been happy staying here if it was described as a simple B&B and the price reflected it, for the price and with an ITC label, I expected much better. No more WelcomHotels for me.
