We spent one night at Thengal Manor en route to Majuli Island. Thengal Manor is situated outside Johat. The property was built in 1929 and therefore has the style of the Edward Lutyens bungalows in Delhi. It has been recently restored and, we are told, it is the more representative property of the period amongst 2 other properties under the “Welcome Heritage “ management (Burra Sahib’s and Mistry Sahibs bungalows). The property itself and the grounds are excellent. However the cleanliness, lack of attention to detail, average food and initial cool reception shows the weakness of remote management. Every room and hallway is stuffed with family heirlooms and while one is happy to dine under the gaze of an occasional antelope or tiger, we found the collective gaze of uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters all over the house cuts your appetite. The rooms are tastelessly cluttered with bric a brac that collect dust.
Considering the price of the stay, Thengal is bad value for money. It could be excellent and worth every rupee if it had the right woman running it.More
