The first time I visited this resort was when I was seven years old. Twenty five years later I decided to return to Hotel Golf Mar. It was a good surprise... because the resort it was upgraded. The food is better. The spa is very therapeutic. The swing-pools were renewed.

The views to the sea and the sunset is what makes the experience of visiting Hotel Golf Mar something very special.

When visiting this Hotel please ask for a room with a sea view on the higher floors to avoid the music of the Discotheque on the first floor.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms with a Sea view on the corners of the Hotel.

Positive:
Breathtaking scenery and location literally on the beach.
Hotel built in the 80's but with proper maintenance. The staff is impeccable, friendly and very professional. The cleaness is very good,and everyday there are fresh towels and toilet products us Soop, shower gel, etc The standard rooms haven't air conditioned, but as the hotel is by the sea on the Atlantic coast, the heat, as a rule, do not sit, even in August, The breakfast is excellent, above expectations since it is a 3 star. It has a fantastic outdoor pool overlooking the sea and an excellent indoor swimming pool, great for cooler days or cloudy. Customers have free service of towels for the pool and the hotel have a nightclub/ Diso opening from Thusday to Saturday. In August there is so kids club free for children.

Negative:
The hotel has nearly 300 rooms on 12 floors, and there are only 2 lifts, plus the charge that customers are forced to use. At certain times of the day the wait seems endless.
As I said, the standard rooms there is no air conditioning. In August, at certain times of the day we miss him.
The hotel is in a relatively isolated area where the supply of restaurants and bars is very limited, and management knows that taking advantage of it to practing stupidly high prices, or even speculation in food and beverages. Let's not forget that this is a Portuguese 3 star hotel charging 5 stars prices, for example, in the restaurant meal costs € 22.50 excluding beverages and soups at the pool bar costs € 3.00. By strange coincidence or not, there are too much rules to restrict any possibility of customers don't buy expensive food of the hotell, such as ban guests of consuming in the pool area products purchasedl outside the hotel, or, in the assembly room breakfast a relentless surveillance service so customers do not take products to consume during the day. I even know, that person next to me is that an hotel employee (Mr. Jorge) forced her to open her personal bag which is illegal in Portugal (Crime) forcing she to pay € 7.5 for carry a bread and a piece of fruit for her child that would not have breakfast. Finally, unfortunately the hotel does not resist the temptation to make the "old trick" of mixing the previous day's croissants with fresh, which is a shame because the breakfast is quite good and plentiful.

Unacceptable - renting rooms that smell like sewagge especially when it's certainly known by the staff. More unnaceptable is to report the fact to the reception desk who promisses to send maintenance and it never arrives. Funny is when the cleaning woman tells you to leave the water taps running to get rid of the smell (now I know why it didn't smell as we entered the room!!)

We spent 2 days using the commom hotel toilets to avoid opening the toilet's door.

Certainly a bad experience in what the room is concerned.

Summary:
Aged but with a few improvements, Golf Mar is a quiet hotel by the sea, with good food, good views and good spa services. Great value for a 3* (I've seen many 4* worser). I've stayed here in 2 occasions and intend to come back again.

Detailed experience:
Site and facilities - Facilities are noticeably not new (you can see by the difference of styles and the materials used), but the hotel in its hotel is pleasant, well located by the sea, has indoor (huge!) and outdoor pools, a wellness centre and a golf practicing course + a horse stable (where you can get lessons or just pay to ride). They also have a modern and pleasant bar within the hotel facilities;
F & B - Very good for a 3*. I've eaten far worse in many 4*. Good breakfast, good buffet dinner, they also usually have thematic dinners (e.g. Valentine's day, S. Martinho, Christmas, etc);
Rooms - Not too big, a bit aged, but nevertheless suitable, with sea views. Luckily they are resisting the 'duvet trend', let's see for how long...
Service - Competent, efficient

I've stayed here on 2 occasions and it keeps on my notes when thinking about a relaxing weekend not too far from Lisbon.
