“Wow..I was surprised”
Reviewed July 23, 2013 via mobile

I was very pleasantly surprised with the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort. Coming from Adelaide I hadn't realised what a gem this place is.
Fantastic location, nestled in the hills of Rowland Flat. Lots of things to see and do. Rooms spacious (we had a 2 bedroom apartment...perfect for kids!). Wine tasting in the foyer and best of all the restaurant was the one of the best hotel restaurants I've visited. The breakfast is superb!
If your an international visitor this place needs to be on your itinerary.

We stayed at this Resort last Thursday and Friday. It is a very nice comfortable hotel with wonderful views and so close to everything in the Barossa. You must have a car of course. We tasted mead for the first time at a brewery and we really like it. Of course there are magnificent vineyards all around but tasting mead was different. We had dinner at Harry's which was enjoyable. Something to be aware of is that GPS directions are on an unmade part of a road which was muddy and we could have been bogged. Directions would have been a lot better if we entered the road at the other end. Best to follow hotel directions rather than GPS.

Room Tip: It is best to go up one level of room as the basic room can be a bit tired.

Pros:
The location was good - no more than 15-20 minutes in any direction to the main town centers of the Barossa. The view from our room was really nice, overlooking Jacobs Creek and the hills. The staff were lovely and the rooms were nicely furnished.

Cons:
Really dirty. I read a lot of reviews for this place and noticed that lots of people had commented on how dirty the rooms were, but I just put this down to people being fussy as I have traveled quite a bit and have never really had a problem. This time though, the reviews were spot on. The room was really dirty. The shower was covered in mould (big black patches of it), there were balls of dust/hair/food gathering in the corners of the bathroom floor, and there were little spiders living in most of the corners of the bedroom. The worst part, though, was definitely the bed. While the sheets were clean, the doona and mattress were putrid. And the SMELL of the mattress actually kept me awake, it smelt so bad. I had to have a 2nd shower before checking out to try and get the smell of (what smelt like) 10 years of sweat out of my hair.

As nice as the room and view were, the 'yuck factor' of the bedding and general cleanliness really put us off. We won't be back unfortunately.

Room Tip: As for a room on the second floor for a better view. And ask them to remove the thick goose-down lin...

Dear Yenniva,

Thank you for having stayed with us. It is a disappointment that the housekeeping experience distracted from your overall stay with us. I read with concern about your experience and assure you what you explain is most certainly isolated and not our standard. Subsequently this room has been place out of order until these issues are rectified. Please accept my sincerest apology. I will investigate and review in how and why this happened.
We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and are currently undertaking a full bathroom refurbishment and improving the gym, equipment and surroundings.

My husband and I stayed at the Novatel Barossa Valley Resort on 19th and 20th July. The hotel received rave reviews so perhaps our expectations were raised too high. The property is of course set in spectacular scenery but other than that, it was not special. The room was pleasant enough but I found the tea/coffee supplies to be less than adequate (I have had more in a 3 star motel) and the bathroom was badly designed (why bother with a bath that small?) and again, very few toiletries.

We had dinner in Harry's on the Saturday night and whilst I could not fault the food, the service was disappointing for a supposedly world class hotel. My major pet hate when dining out is when plates are cleared when someone at the table is still eating and I was very disappointed when this happened. Also, the wine was poured by the staff member grasping the middle of the bottle and not pouring correctly from the bottom of the bottle. Minor details but at this level of hotel, I really expected more.

Reception was delightful both on checking in and out.

If I were to recommend this hotel, it would be for the location more than anything for the views are spectacular.

Room Tip: Possibly even better view from the top floor rather than the ground floor.

Well designed hotel allowing all rooms magnificent views over the valley and ranges.Stayed in a studio one bedroom apartment on the southern end of the complex. The room was clean, warm and allowed weary travellers respite and peace and quiet. Didn't have dinner at Harry's restaurant but had some drinks at Gramps bar , by the exquisite fireplace attended by helpful staff. Before breakfast went for a walk around the grounds down to the fast flowing Nth Para river which meant I worked up an appetite for the full buffet breakfast. Having had many buffets this one was very good with a full range of cereals, fruit, juices and cooked items and pastries. The staff throughout the stay were friendly and helpful. Will be back

A well overdue visit but very worthwhile. The reception/dining area is delightful with spectular views across the valley. Service at the bar and the restaurant was exceptional. Dinner on a relatively busy Sunday night was perfect and the food was of a very high quality. Wine list was impressive!

The breakfast buffet was not the best around with some of the dishes relatively cool / bordering on cold and the selection of fresh fruit pretty ordinary given the location.

I was very impressed with the facilities with great tennis/ gym facilities and the track around the resort was a welcome piece of exercise.

Look forward to coming back in summer to make the most of the impressive pool and surrounds.
