We have friends at Kewarra beach so they recommended for us to visit the wetlands which was just around the corner.
It is open from the early morning and there is a nice boardwalk through a palm forest.
Apparently, it used to be a sand quarry in the past and a great place for bird watchers as there are bird hides along the way.

We visited this wetlands in the late afternoon (purposely to spot birds). We were the only people there and it was so peaceful. The place has a big swampy area as well as boardwalk into the forest. We saw many birds including ibis, darter, masked lapwing, egret, comb crested jacana, frairbird, figbird, lorikeets, grebes and a few others. We spent about 1.5 hours there. Bring some insect repellent if you plan to visit. The paths are wheelcahir accessable and bathrooms are clean.

It was a lovely visit and would love to go back.

This nature reserve is an easy ride north of Cairns, signposted from the Captain Cook Highway near Yorkey's Knob. It has good paths, a rainforest boardwalk, BBQ and picnic areas. The paths are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, there is a good parking area and toilets. Today, not at the best time, I saw yellow-footed scrub fowl, jacanas, various ducks, geese and egrets, a kookaburra and sunbird . It' s great place for some peace and quiet.

Fantastic place to take a bike ride, picnic, read a book , observe birds appreciate flora and fauna, or just appreciate nature. Situated just out from Yorkeys Knob this wetlands has been transformed replanted and looked recovered from old farming land. Sheltered Bird hides , sheltered barbecue tables and chairs, barbecues , toilet facilities this just has it all for a great afternoon or morning out with nature. Avoid middy and middle afternoon as the heat is horrendous with no breezes available. Also load with misquitos when it has rained a few days before and at dusk so insect repellant is a must. If you are lucky enough you will see rare birds and a wallaby or two take the dirt walking tracks around the lakes .

It was about 2:30pm when I got here, so was pretty hot. Not a lot of wildlife around, would visit either early morning or late afternoon. Didn't get to walk around the whole area, but was nice to take pics of flowers, water and birds. This area was originally farmland, it has been turned into a lovely natural habitat for wildlife.
