“Are you kidding?”

'closed due to flooding' was the sign on the gates. It's a wet land, it's supposed to be wet.

“Relaxing place, worth going for a morning or afternoon walk”
Reviewed December 11, 2011

There is not too much to this park, there is a casual and relaxing walk around a few small lakes abundant with local birdlife and butterflies. There are viewing decks if you want to spend more time look at the birds and also a short boardwalk through the rainforest. They also have barbecue facilities. It's close to town and very simple, yet you end up drifting away and really relaxing. It is very well maintained, quiet and a great place to go to walk for an hour or 2.

“Excellent new nature reserve near Cairns, QLD...... Free!”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

Originally a sugarcane farm, Cattana Wetlands was then used as a sand mining quarry which created several fresh and saltwater man-made lakes. Abandoned for several years, it was then taken over by the Cairns Regional Council and converted into a nature park. It is almost 200 acres in size and is home to many varieties of native birds and wildlife.

There are several easy hiking trails, plus a boardwalk which goes back into the boggy swamps to take visitors into a primeval landscape. It is probably best to visit in the early morning or evening, because many of the species will shelter from the heat of the day.
There is a paved parking area, restrooms, and several picnic areas for families to visit.

To reach the Wetlands, drive north out of Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway to the exit for Yorkeys Knob Road, then turn left at Dunne Road.

It is easy to spend several relaxed hours enjoying many waterfowl and other types of animal life and vegetation which fill the Cattana Wetlands.
