Last year I stayed at Soneva Jani, Thailand, and I fell in Love with the place. This time I returned to Thailand and decided to stay at Soneva Kiri, with the expectation that the stay would be wonderful as before; Soneva Kiri did not disappoint.
Soneva Kiri is located on Koh Kood Island, around 1 hour flight from Bangkok. To my surprise the resort has it’s own air strip! Upon arrival I was greeted with rain, however this only made the nature friendly resort appear more vibrant and beautiful.
Soneva Kiri resort is very eco-friendly; the theme of the resort is to seamlessly blend style and comfort with locally sourced materials through ecologically sustainable development. I really loved features such as pool surrounding my bedroom, or using my personal driving buggy to travel between places. You may also experience the whole resort on barefoot without getting your feet dirty once. .
Not only my eyes and heart were in love with this resort, but my stomach also! The restaurants in Sovena Kiri not only serve the best dishes but also provide memorable and unique experiences. My favorite meal was the high tea at TreePod, where I was dined at a nest-like table and the dishes were served by a waiter on a zip line.
Other great restaurants you can find in this resort such as The View; where your dishes are prepared by a Michelin Starred Chef. Also try Benz; the specialized Thai traditional food restaurant. Another option is So Chilled, a casual and relaxed restaurant where you can have your tea snacks and sandwiches.
One of the most important reasons why I love Sovena Kiri so much is that the resort is dedicated to recycling and reusing materials. For instance, the old filtered cooking oil can be reused as machine fuel. Remaining food and organic matters are collected to be recycled as fertilizer, which is used as organic fertilizer for the vegetables we have in the restaurants. This takes a great effort and marks Soneva Kiri out as a resort that cares deeply about its environmental impact. .
And of course, all of these amazing aspect would be no where without the caring, warm and kind staff of Sovena Kiri. The resort provided a personal butler; who took great care of us during our time here. I never felt watched or surveilled, the staff were always discreet, friendly and helpful.
Over all, my stay was like a fairytale come true. The beautiful nature, the professional staff, the wonderful services, they all made my time well spent and made me felt like being embraced in the loving arms of Mother Nature. I can’t wait to come back here again with my friends and family to enjoy this wonderful experience again, together.

This was our second visit to Soneva Kiri. The previous one being seven years ago when the resort was quite new. I must say that we enjoyed our stay even more this time despite being the rainy season. It helped that we were very lucky with the weather and that we got a huge upgrade. It only rained once during our week at Kiri so that was fortunately not an issue this time.

We were very fortunate to be upgraded to villa 31, a huge five-bedroom villa, with lots of outdoor space and a beautiful view. The kids loved the waterslide. Huge pool, upstairs terrace with fantastic dining area where you could watch the stars after dinner. Walk in wine-cellar. Lots and lots of daybeds and places to just hang out and read a nice book.

Some other reviewers have noted that the resort is starting to wear a bit. However, I would not agree that this was a problem. I think the general design could give that impression of you were comparing to more regular five-star resorts. In this case Kiri is all built out of sustainable natural materials that ages with weather over time. I think that our villa was in great shape and was well maintained if you are ok with the fact that wood changes naturally when exposed to rain and sun. Maintenance was going on in many surrounding villas so it’s obvious that they are doing upkeep continuously. You just have to come here with the right expectations. Don’t expect Dubai. This is more of a Robinson cruise experience. Although it comes with huge villas and six-star service.

One of the things that I appreciate with Soneva is that they try as much as possible to preserve the natural environment surrounding the resort. Here you really feel that you are in the jungle and close to nature.

The north beach was absolutely great. Even better than the now closed south beach. The only disadvantage is that you have to get there by boat and that it was closed many of the days because of high waves that made it difficult to transport guests and supplies there. The new restaurant at North beach was excellent with a limited but very good menu and fantastic service.

As many other reviewers have said I agree that service is excellent at Kiri. Genuine friendliness and a lovely team all the way from housekeeping to management.
Our Friday Ms. Jom was very good and proactive. Fantastic chefs that willingly offered to cook us anything we liked. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. Very good food in general and exceptional breakfasts.

One highlight was when we booked the Cinema Paradiso for a private viewing with dinner and drinks. A memorable experience indeed.

GM Antony, a very pleasant and kind person, was always there making sure that we had a good time and interested in hearing our feedback.

In summary Soneva Kiri is now better than ever and I can recommend visiting in the low season when rates are considerably more favourable.

Dear Richard_L73

Greetings from Soneva Kiri. Thank you for your detailed description and for explaining so well our Robison Crusue feel, its beautifully summed up. Its interesting you mentioned the wood, we have been debating for about 6 months if we should replace the main walk way of the resort, from the jetty all the way to the breakfast area and we are divided at the middle. Some of us feel now the wood is really beautiful, the sun, rain, our feet have made it into a incredibly shining and smooth surface, others feel its actually too smooth and need to be changed to have a newer look and more grip. We are at an impasse, we will let Sonu and Eva give the deciding vote on their next visit.

In my totally biased opinion I love it when you say "Soneva Kiri is now better than ever"...team been smiling about this and using it as a personal badge. Thank you for that.

Best regards

We visited Soneva Kiri in early June and although it was the beginning of the rain season in Thailand, we had exception weather with just a few drops of rain. Obviously, any weather fluctuation has nothing to do with the resort, but I wanted to mention that we got great weather even in the green season :)
The transportation to Soneva was catered via the hotel plane, on the Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi)-Mai Si (the hotel’s “airport” island) route and everything went as expected, fast and smoothly. The airport is 5 minutes away with the speed boat from the property the resort is built on and at check in you are welcomed by your own buggy and your own Mr/Mrs. Friday (personal butler).
The buggy is yours for the entire stay, while you only see Mr. Friday in the morning and night, or even less, by a phone call in case of need. We were lodged in a villa on the beach with sea view that was extremely spacious (had several outdoor relaxing spaces, 2 showers, an outdoor bathtub, dressing, interior relaxing spaces and much more). We were surprised to see that everything is so well thought out that you feel like they are at least 3 steps ahead of yours :)
Nothing is placed at rand, everything is extremely discreet, every light has a purpose, every scent is meant to enchant you (by the way, you can choose your room and bathroom fragrance before your arrival as well as the type of pillow you want to sleep on, what movies you want to watch, what music you want in your villa, your dietary restrictions and what activities you want to pre-book).
The places you can eat are very different, from The View restaurant, where you get dishes prepared by a Michelin chef all the way to the Benz, where you can taste traditional Thai food, carefully chosen by the chef with the same name. There’s also So Chilled, a more relaxed restaurant where you can even order sandwiches, and TreePod (the restaurant in the tree) where you can have breakfast, lunch and the so-called “high tea” served by a waiter that brings your food on a zip line.
They even have a room full of chocolate which you can taste at your discretion next to homemade ice cream. Or the cheese and bread room, all you can eat as well :) And if that wasn’t enough, they even have an observatory, a giant playground, and an outdoor cinema.
What’s more important and the thing that placed Soneva Kiri on the map of the most beautiful hotels we ever stayed at is the sustainability and the care they have for the environment. Congratulations for understanding that you can’t take without giving something back, for understanding that plastic is a real danger for the environment, for teaching the young ones the importance of everything that is nature. For understanding that the experience is what is left when all else is gone and that luxury means, above all: time, intimacy and care for everything surrounding you. Looking forward to our next visit :)

Dear Andra-Butaru

Greetings from Soneva Kiri. Thank you for taking the time to write such beautiful comments about your stay.

Special thank you for your appreciation of our concept. Being respectful of our environment and be sustainable is our reason for being here. Simple actions such as taking away bottled water seemed like such a risk but every guest that stays with us praises the fact we make our own water and bottle it in glass so it can be re-used. Among other initiatives, this year we are increasing the production of our own vegetables, all in our constant attempt to be completely sustainable.

Looking forward to seeing you soon

I stayed here for a week while on vacation with my family. I've stayed at Soneva Fushi multiple times and decided to give Soneva Kiri a try. Overall, it was a wonderful vacation in almost all aspects.

Soneva Kiri is on Koh Kut, which is a ~1hr flight from Suvarnabhumi on a private plane. Pickup and the flight were great, and Soneva provided wonderful personalized service the whole way.

The resort itself is very nice. We had booked a 2 bedroom beach villa. We were in Villa 6, which is large and can easily hold 6 or more people (there were only 4 of us, so it felt huge). The decor is very much like Soneva Fushi... rustic but elegant, with comfortable beds, lots of day beds everywhere, and a great bath with outdoor shower. The in-villa pool was fantastic, and beach access was easy while still providing good privacy. Good internet is provided, and movies, etc., are available via streaming to the TV. Since all the villas are slightly different, it is worth thinking carefully about your villa choice to ensure it meets your needs. For us, the villa was certainly a highlight.

Soneva operates 2 main beaches... the beach in front of our villa was nice. Since there are some streams that run to the beach, the sand at this beach was a little clumpy, but not too bad. The water was clear, and we enjoyed a lot of peaceful snorkeling, etc. Soneva also operates a boat-only access beach to the North. Here, the sand was great and the water was just as nice, if not better. There are also water sports available. We spent time at both beaches, but actually enjoyed the first beach more, since the north beach was more crowded.

The resort restaurants were good. Of the various restaurants, we found Benz to be spectacular... great Thai Food (and I lived in Thailand previously, so I am quite picky). The other restaurants were good as well, but overall, I think I preferred the food at Soneva Fushi since the individual menus were more appealing to my taste.

Soneva provides outstanding staff, and all our interactions with the staff were fantastic. As always, this is a highlight of staying at a Soneva resort. We were also able to make a few trips outside the resort with the staff (a couple of beach clean-ups, a trip to the waterfall, and a snorkelling trip to the nearby national park). All of these were great, and were made even better by the cheerful and helpful Soneva personnel.

Probably my only disappointment is related to overall privacy of the resort. Comparing to Soneva Fushi, we felt like we saw the other guests much more, and could hear them as well (including in some parts of the villa due to the surprisingly loud family next door). In Soneva Fushi, there is much more privacy, just based on the arrangement of the island. Also, it seems like there are more young children at Soneva Kiri, probably because Thailand is a much more popular family destination than the Maldives. Still, these are minor quibbles and overall, we really enjoyed our stay. We would definitely consider visiting again... this certainly will be on my list of favorite beach destinations (the others are Soneva Fushi and Pacific Resorts Aitutaki).

Dear VivekSub

Greetings from Soneva Kiri. Thank you for your lovely description of your holiday with us, it is indeed the Soneva hosts that make this already stunning island into something really special, the team knows that if they create a unique experience the guests can enjoy all that this beautiful jungle has to offer.

I am sorry about the noise next door, the distance between villas is similar to Soneva Fushi but here we have trees vs the mangroves and bushes in Soneva Fushi which does make a difference with sound. We are slowly adding sandstone walls between villas so the sound will be more buffered.

Being on the list of one of our guest's favorite destination trumps all possible awards and accolades. Thank you for adding us in.

Hope to see you soon,

Best regards

Francisca

I've been to several "six-star" resorts, including four Club Meds and the Ritz-Carltons in Krabi and Cancun (and several other R-C and Four Seasons properties). Soneva Kiri is the best resort I've ever experienced.

Other reviewers have recited Soneva's merits in adequate detail. For our part, the highlights were the food, the service, and the ambiance.

Every meal we ate--from the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet to dinner at Benz's--could have been Michelin-starred. Soneva Kiri's new chef, Promo, is creative and prodigiously talented. The ingredients are second to none. Dinner buffets regularly include blue-fin tuna. Breakfast includes Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and eggs made properly in a double-boiler. No detail is overlooked, and Promo will make special efforts to tailor every meal you have to your tastes. Spring for the wine cellar dinner at The View. Chef Danny is an absolute pro, and Soneva's sommelier would hold her own in any high-end western restaurant.

The service was similarly exceptional. Soneva's staff seems genuinely happy to serve its guests. We connected personally with several service staff, all of whom were friendly, gregarious, and eager to personalize and enhance our experience. Our "Ms. Friday," Fern, was attentive but not overbearing. She picked up on our habits and preferences within the first two days of our seven-night stay and adjusted accordingly. I was astounded to discover that she was working with two other families while serving us--I would have believed that we were her only task for the week.

Finally, Soneva takes advantage of its setting in a way most top-notch resorts don't. Instead of clear-cutting Koh Kood's forests and landscaping from scratch, Sonu and Eva built the villas, restaurants, etc., around the existing foliage. The result is a more authentic--and more beautiful--experience.

A few minor imperfections: First, we went during the off-season, and there were flies everywhere, including during mealtime. We appreciate that Soneva tries to preserve its environment, but they need to find a way to deal with this. We were batting away flies from Michelin-starred food the whole week. Second, Fern's English could use some improvement, especially compared to staff at other high-end Thai resorts. Several times, we struggled to communicate pretty basic requests, especially over the phone. That said, you'll always have the GM and AGM at your fingertips as a backup, and their English (and, I'm sure, Chinese and Russian) is immaculate. Finally, our villa was pretty close to a larger villa, which for most of our stay housed an American family with four loud, poorly behaved children. Not much Soneva can do about this, but it did disrupt a few evenings.

A final note (though I wouldn't call it a complaint): There's a saying about buying a Mercedes Benz, that if you can't afford two, you can't afford one. A stay at Soneva Kiri is the same way. Food and spa charges will easily add up to $5,000-$6,000 per week for a couple, in addition to the price of the room. Worth every penny, but be ready to loosen the purse-strings for the duration of your stay.

Dear Eric H

Greetings from Soneva Kiri. Thank you for your description of your stay with us and for ratings us so high among your other hotel stays. Fern is one of our young hosts with tremendous potential, thank you for recognizing that.

In rainy season it is a little bit more complicated to control mosquitos and flies, its not due to the efficacy of our natural products but the rain washes it away so getting the right amount after each rainfall is the tricky part. We have started a ground breaking system in one of our resort in the Maldives with very good results, we have our first audit by specialists this month here in Soneva Kiri so next time you visit us you will notice a major improvement. On the English proficiency, we have English classes daily for our team, we will work on how to fast track the learning process.

We hope to see you again soon!

Best regards
