“Terrible! Left after one night...”
Reviewed November 25, 2011

Thought it was a nice way to spend 2 nights, but we left after one...
Sandbugs on the beach, which isn't that nice... and not clean
"Deluxe room" isn't deluxe:
No electricity
Cold shower
Bed is terrible
Bugs everywhere
No cleaning
Breakfast/lunch/dinner waste of money

We spend 2 nights in a treehouse in Khao Sok, which was great! No electricity, cold shower, but clean and nice... But this???
Not for us...

We stayed in Kohjum Joy Bungalows for 3 nights at the end of October. It was by far the most relaxing part our trip as the beach so peaceful and much less hectic than anywhere else in Thailand we went. The staff were all lovely too and would do anything for you. I would definitely recommend the resort.

If you are going to spend a few days or longer at a place on the beach, the food matters. We spent more than a week island hopping, and of all the places we stayed, the food at Joy Bungalows was the best. We could see them in the kitchen even hand tossing the pizza crust. (At another resort, we were served frozen pizza!).

The accommodations are on the rustic side -- the bungalows do not have electricity, so the staff hands out kerosene lanterns at dusk.

The beach is perfect.

Of all the places we stayed, Joy Bungalows would be my first choice place for a return visit.

Joy Bungalows is probably the largest resort on Koh Yum.
We paid 800 baht for a hut with a double room. Don't be fooled into paying extra for a hut 'on the beach' these are just 10 meters closer to the beach than the cheaper ones.
The hut was clean with a double size bed (the mattress of which needed replacing) and an en suit that did not have hot water.
There's no electricity in the huts and the only lighting is by paraffin lamps provided. During the day there is nothing to do but lie in the hammocks by the beach and read. At night there are a few other bars up and down the beach but out of season as we were Joy is the best option.
You can leaves valuable in the hotels safe.
If you've come to Koh Jum from Karbie or Phi Phi you will probably be disappointed by the quality of the beach. but you have to remember that you have been spoilt and also that you will have the beach to yourselves.
There is a small village on Koh Jum that you can reach via a path though the jungle (and I DO mean jungle). I would not advise trying to walk this path in the dark so eating out in the village in the evening is not an option. Also the first time you walk into the village be sure to mark your route in some way since retracing your steps may not be simple.
Joy Bungalows and Koh Jum is a true cast-away experience. If you can live without our luxuries then this is not the place for you,

Room Tip: be sure to take a good tourch.

We had a real nice huge bungalow with a balcony with sea view. Very quiet and cozy. Very nice long and white sand beach. Restaurant delicious and staff funny, friendly and warm. The only surprise was a lack of electricity within the bungalows, which wasn't a problem at all as you get an oil lamp at the reception and candles in the village 15 walking minutes away. All in all, we highly recommend this place to couples, who do not want to be in the high tourist centers like Ko PhiPhi etc.

I booked Joy bungalows through advice given on Tripadvisor and reviews. We rented a longtail boat from Railay west beach for 1700bht, journey took about 1 ½ hours and we had the great luck to see a whale shark on our journey. We were met by the staff on the beach and our luggage taken to our 2 bedroom bungalow. We fell in love with the resort and island straight away, the people on the resort and the lovely people in the Muslim village. This Island is not very well known about even by Thais, so if you want girlie bars, loud discos, touts and package holiday deals, don’t read any further. This is a place of sheer beauty, a place to forget about the outside world and a place for your worries to drain away. The bungalows are varied in style and quality; we stayed in a 2 bedroom bungalow, two toilets and two showers, No electricity, just gas lampas, but this was so nice to sit out on the balcony with our gas lamps listing to the waves lapping up 10 meters from our bungalow. Paradise found and we will return next year but for longer, the empty beaches, the lovely people, nice food and the isolation from the package holiday brigade. My place I have been looking for 25 years, before mass tourism took over most of the beautiful places and Islands of this lovely country.

We stayed at Joy Bungalow for 2 nights in January 2011 ... the whole experience is perfect if you are after something a little different whilst in Thailand and it is one you'll never forget.

There is no direct boat to Koh Jum, the ferry from Krabi / or Ko Lanta stops in the middle of the ocean and long tail boats from the various resorts come out to pick you up! You then land on avirtually deserted beach and realise this island is really something different.

Joy Bungalow is a beautiful family run resort with many bungalows, it is not expensive so I recomend at least booking a delux bungalow as they are still quite basic. All the bungalows are on stilts and are simple but lovely with a balcony at the front a bed with mosquito net and a bathroom.

The main thing about the island is there is no electricity, at night the restaraunt is lit up by a generator and you are given gas lamps to take back to your bungalow for light! It is a very different experience and not for the faint hearted or those who like their luxuries ... forget hairdryers and hair straightners. The restaraunt is fabulous, really friendly staff and amazing food with plenty of board games and alcohol to keep you entertained.

The beach is beautiful and almost deserted (except for the hundreds of tiny crabs!), it is such a beautiful place but 2 days to recharge our batteries was enough for us here as you are limited in what you can actually do there.
Well worth a visit though just for the different experience, it is testament to Koh Jum how many people were staying at Joy saying that they came back year after year :-)
