After the hustle and bustle of the Thai tourist trail, Koh Yao Yai (the southern of the two islands) was a tranquil paradise. No pushy vendors, few tourists, incredible views, and a special opportunity to see how local Thai people live. We recommend hiring a motor bike to get a good look at the countryside - one of the few places we felt safe doing this!
Our only regret was that we only had one night there. Let's hope this island paradise escapes the temptation of big tourism and stays as charming as it is.
Well worth the boat trip from Phang Nga (leaves at 1pm daily from Than Dan Pier) to Koh Yao Noi, then a tuk tuk to another pier and long-tail to Koh Yao Yai. The locals are extremely friendly and will do their best to get you to your destination. There are more regular boats to and from Phuket.
